I have a video I was making for a small film festival, where would I go to get permission to use the theme from pink panther?

Also, are there any sites which have a large selection of free, royalty free theme-like music?

If you were in the US would suggest looking up "pink panther" atascap.com (http://www.ascap.com) or bmi.com (http://www.bmi.com), but sense you are in Canada I don't who controls the rights there. Even if you find out where to get permission to use the music don't expect it to be cheap (especially w/a new Pink Panther movie coming out soon).

You need to pay for a syncronization license for the music

In this case, the original movie music was written by Henry Mancini (although there have been additional Pink Panther selections written by others for the cartoons, etc.). Searching the ASCAP.com website, you would contact the following for synchronization rights:

There are a number of places you can purchase royalty-free or "buyout" music libraries. (this is not an endorsement of any one of these)

The problem with freely downloadable music is that you don't know where it comes from. The web site may say "royalty-free" or "public domain" when in fact it is ripped from a commercial recording. The $^#@ hits the fan, and you will be held accountable. Ignorance is not a defence.
