New Database Server
If you haven't noticed already, the site has been handling increased user loads very well over the past 4-5 days. We've successfully migrated to three servers at this time. MacRumors' front page, forums and database now reside on individual dedicated servers.
This will provide much needed horsepower to allow lively discussion during the most amazing and disappointing Apple announcements.
As well, we've developed a dramatically improved Keynote webcasting system to be able to handle very large user loads with much more frequent updates.
How to Support MacRumors
While our servers were struggling with the increasing popularity of the site, many users asked how they could help support the site. Here are the primary ways to support MacRumors and Forums.
Spreading the Word
As counterintuitive as it may seem due to the recent server loads, we still actively encourage you to continue to spread the word about this site. The forums will continue to be upgraded to handle any additional load required.
We would ask those with blogs/websites to actively link to MacRumors (http://www.macrumors.com) and our associated sites. The ongoing success of the site depends on interested users.
Participate
Join the forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/), post questions, comments and answers. We also have active SETI and Folding distributed computing teams (http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19) which would be happy to get any further assistance.
New Shop Links
New shop links to popular Mac-related stores are now provided near the top of the forums (http://forums.macrumors.com). These shop links provide quick links to popular online vendors such as Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=weeno&creative=9325) and MacMall (http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-462641-54376).
Members are encouraged to regularly utilize and refer others to these sponsored links to support ongoing costs.
Subscriptions
Based on user requests, the site subscription/contribution system is back in place. Registered forum users can contribute to the site through the Paid Subscriptions link (http://forums.macrumors.com/subscriptions.php?) found in the User Control Panel (http://forums.macrumors.com/usercp.php?). Cost of the contribution for $25/year and provides users with an ad-free MacRumors front page as well as access to private forums. Currently payment is only accepted via PayPal/Credit Card.

Now might be a good time to point out the following...
Forum Registration FAQs
I can't post - the most likely reason is that you have not activated your forum account. You must click on the link in the verification email sent to you when you registered. If you need this email sent again, click here (http://forums.macrumors.com/register.php?do=requestemail)
I can't register - it says I'm banned - certain email domains (yahoo.com for example) are not allowed due to abusive registrations. You must use another email address
I can't upload an avatar - you need 500 posts before you can use a custom avatar.
Do I get an avatar if I contribute - no, sorry - you still need reach 500 posts.

Its an excellent idea.
The number of honest people you are referring to that might feel shut out, versus the number of people that would bombard the board with "mac suxorz" messages has GOT to be tiny.
There has to be some sort of check in place to make a person think twice about abusing the board, and being able to trace the user to a legitimate ISP is a fine way to do it. Not foolproof, but enough to stop most I am sure.
Allowing people to register using email accounts from free email services is pretty much the same as having no registration process at all, I think.

It's a tradeoff. The amount of abusive spammers that come out of the woodworks is impressive.

This is a good point. Although there are quite a number of us "regulars" on MacRumors, it's really in everyone's best interest to bring in new opinions, ideas and so forth to keep things interesting. By introducing more people to this site, this can be accomplished, and MacRumors will be a better place for it. The more people that participate, the more that everyone gets out of the site.

Certain domain names are blocked from being able to be used for registration, this is part of an effort to counteract spammers, that's all. If you want to subscribe just go to your UserCP and view Paid Subscriptions, there you can pay the $25 via paypal.

the free email thing and the paypal thing aren't related to each other.
Once you are a registered user, and you happen to want to contribute, you can do so.
Otherwise, registration is free -- the only catch is you can't use certain free email providers as your email address when you register.

This site is done the right way as far as Apple rumor and speculation go - because - it's usually just that.
I think this site serves a User Group purpose whereas Think Secret regularly hurts Apple, demeans Apple financially, and has no respect for law.
I enjoy most of the conversation here - a lot of the readers here (the ones I agree with) add to the intelligent conversation.
Most recently, I have enjoyed the debate over Think Secret.
I also appreciate the recent efforts by moderators to keep posts on topic, but I don't like the splitting of topics to other forums.

Thanks for the improvements Arn.
I'm not in a hurry to get an avatar. I may be one of the slowest regular posters but I'll get there eventually. I'll be contributing soon as I really enjoy reading MR each day.
I do my best to spread the word, but I don't know many Mac users. If any PC friends ask me a question about Macs, I usually point them here.
Not many people visit my webpage (just a simple .mac homepage) so a link would not help much I don't think. I'll put one on anyway when I have time to put a nice MR logo next to the Apple one at the bottom.
Thanks again.

There are a lot of purchase decisions made surrounding these forums. This feeds into the logic behind the "shop" links at the top of the threads. People who find these forums useful or use them daily are encouraged to use those links, which do directly support this site. Crucial is among them.

do i get a avatar if i contribute?
I think this is a fabulous idea. I spend most of my free time working on a project with a web server and a large community, and we're starting to hit the limits of our single server, so this all sounds quite familiar. We will soon be offering a an optional membership package to help pay the server bills, and custom avatars are one of the many features our paid members will get. Remember, people love to personalize things, and this is a great way to do it. And it would entice someone like me, who's been here over 2 years and is barely over 60% of the way to the minimum post count for an avatar. :D I just can't bring myself to post a flood of "Me too"s to get there... :rolleyes:
Anyway, great job to all involved, this is a very enjoyable site to visit. ;)

Why? If you're going to participate and contribute content on a regular basis, you'll get to 500 posts all in good time. What's the rush? Are you more concerned with being a part of the community or with having a little picture under your name? Patience is a virtue, just wait and you'll eventually get one. :)

Don't be a hypocrite. This site would barely exist without Think Secret.
Say what?
Think Secret doesn't make a point by talking about Apple patents that often.
Think Secret never reported the "powerbook G5" found in the html code on the Apple website.
Think Secret never speculates about what videos in iTunes could mean.
Macrumors is driven mostly by user submissions and actual investigation - Think Secret happens to be a BONUS to Macrumors on occasion because they ILLEGALLY AND UNETHICALLY conspire to obtain news that has for the most part turned out to be true and therefore gets macrumors a few hits for recycling the headlines that come from there.
I give Think Secret NO CREDIT for Macrumors being the great site that it is. However, Think Secret owes a lot to arn for giving people a second look at the headlines.

Ok, have I understood this correctly. You get to become a Demi-God as soon as you pay up $25? ...and you become a Contributor, when?
If so, then it sounds like a huge inflation of titles.
I honestly liked it better when you could tell the "rank" of the person you where talking with. As of now I have seen tons of demi-gods floating around. Ok, after lurking around here for a couple of years before I began to post I have some idea of who is who. Still couldn't it be an idea to provide nonmod "old timers" with some other title, for the sake of those that hopefully will join in later? Like ... Grand duke of the knights that says NIH? :p
I don't know, just an idea on top of my head. Probably, a stupid idea...

Same thing, except some members feel uncomfortable with the god/dess bit for personal reasons so choose the more accurate and neutral 'contributor'.

I found some old posts from some dude named AplhaTech there. He and this guy named BritBoy were hellions and a lot of fun. Wonder what happened to them?
ahh the good old days... late night banter that the early to bed folks would trash in the morning when they found it... ahh
britboy is still around but pretty rarely i think...

Contributor. Demi...
Same thing, except some members feel uncomfortable with the god/dess bit for personal reasons so choose the more accurate and neutral 'contributor'.
Thanks!
Couldn't it be worth considering to "promote" people that have been around for a couple of years?
Perhaps as some sort of guides helping newcomers to fit into this community.
I don't know, as I said it might be a terrible idea.
It does not necessariy have to be Grand dukes of the Knights who says NIH, but admit the title is kind of cool. :D

Get a PayPal account like I did, then pay with Paypal. It's as simple as that. You might be able to do it without registering, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Check the page that comes up when you click the Pay via Paypal button.

Wow, the flood of new Demi-Gods is impressive, and great to see from a support point of view!
As a previous poster said though, it's a little odd, as I know some Demi-Gods which have been Demi-Gods for a long time, some new DGs which have been around for ages, and new DGs who are essentially newbies, yet have the same designation now as the others!
And I was debating making a contribution myself, but now that actually having a processor ranking is becoming more of a rarity, maybe I should hold onto it! ;)
Seriously, great to see all the support for such a great site - MacRumors deserves it, we have an excellent community here. :cool:

Well, I kind of liked to see the contributor title under wdlove. I mean how many post does he have? +13000? IMHO, that commitment deservs a personal title. Perma-contributor?
In some sense I think knowing this guy has been around for a while gives this community stability if you know what I mean.
I will pay my own contribution to this site as soon as get around to see how it is done. However, the title makes me a bit uncomfortable. I would feel much better getting it after a coule of years, not now.
Same goes for this carze to get an avatar. I just dont get it.
To me, this site is a source of information and a place where I can have seemingly endless discussions about the optimal brewing temperature of coffee. (ok, so I was accused of being an über barrista, but what the heck...)
It is not about a generic title, nor about sporting an avatar... :rolleyes:
of course as always, just my opinion.

~Shard~

I was about to ask about that. What does the 68040 stand for?
It's my processor ranking. Once you hit 500 posts, you become a 6502. From there, the list is as follows:
65816 => 1000 posts
65832 => 1500 posts
68000 => 1505 posts
68010 => 2000 posts
68020 => 2005 posts
68030 => 2500 posts
68040 => 3000 posts
And 601 at 5000 posts, I believe. There are higher rankings, but it is rumored and speculated that the next ranking isn't until 10,000 posts. :eek: So after that, there would be the 603, 603e, etc, etc. until you eventually hit the 74xx series and then into the more current processors. And then maybe at 50,000 posts I'll be a 970... ;) :cool:

On a lighter note. I moderated pocketpcpassion for about a year and a half all myself until Dale started getting more mods. I appreciate how difficult it can be to mod a forum. Hard and fast rules are a joke. You run across so many questionable circumstances its ridicules. People get pissed about some of the things mods do. (God know I had enough people bitching at me.) But most don't realize that a lot of the decisions are off the cuff trying to adhere to a common sense. Finding that balance between a dictatorship and controlled chaos is hard. Even more so when you deal with sites that attract the opposition (e.g. Pocket pc vs. Palm. Mac vs. PC.) It’s a hard gig to manage. I was always questioning myself about is deleting this post, editing that post the right thing to do. whatever. I'm babbling. Basically. Thanks guys for doing a great job. Amen! I have mod'd BBS's in the past, and co-mod'd forums more recently. It is a thankless job IMO.
In in the end it was the efforts of the "staff" here that made it worth my hard earned dollars to contribute. For me if atopic strays off what they consider appropriate, they generally move it to the PF threads. Otherwise, they force me to tae a look at whether the thread was worth my efforts, only to be wastelanded.

Moderating is probably over-rated. I know that on the CS server that I'm an admin on, the powers quickly become more of a chore. People constantly barraging me with requests to spec for "hackers", or kicking AFK's, slaying campers, etc. I would think that the same would hold true for an online community, but then again I've never moderated an online forum so who am I to talk?

wow, i went to go be less of a "free-loader" and contribute once and for all and it said macrumors is not taking contributions at this time :eek: whoa, wasn't expecting that... macrumors doesn't like me [pouts] :D
and on the moderation topic i read through, it is so over rated, it was really not fun a great deal of the time. (other sites obviously) i am also a board tech at another vBulletin formatted forum and people can be very annoying, especially the ones who actually know a little bit of what they are talking about, they are almost worse than the "how do i post a picture" dumbasses. the whole "can you install *this* hack?" thing annoys me to no end. i am basically an administrator but i refuse to deal with personal issues so i have the more stand-offish title of board tech. ;)
so no one get too excited, those mods have lots of junk to deal with. Doctor Q always has his work cut out for him here too, that picture thread alone :eek: :D

i have a recent one of my jumping off part of a dam (i have an adrenaline problem) but i was wearing "board shorts" (yes, for a chick i am a total jock) if i end up ditching some inhibition it might end up in a desktop thread near you or subtly hidden somewhere. i might even take a cue from diatribe and keep the thing up only for a short amount of time. you just never know with me.
oh and i did pm someone about the goddess thing.
thanks everyone... i feel better about contributing to this site, it's helped me so much!

Yes, I know. :cool:
And no, I don't believe there are any female Mods. Ever considered it? Hmm, although I'm not sure if I want you to have the power to edit and delete my posts.... :eek: :p ;)
Me?! A mod?! HAHAHAHHAA, never. I don't know enough about computers, Macs, or vBulletins... besides, there are plenty of much-better qualified women here on MR that would probably be up for 1st female mod before I. Just a few that I can think of, Applespider, vniow, iBlue, etc. etc. Although, I do have loads of free time (it seems like) that I kill on MR.
And why would I ever edit/delete your posts? ;)

Just give me a fair chance to see it, that's all I'm asking! ;)

Yes, we do have a lot of excellent, knowledgeable female members on the site - it's great to see!

And it's even better to see some new female members making a real impact on the forum. Our small but vocal minority is growing... ;)

...Are there any female mods?...To confirm ~Shard~'s answer, no, not at the moment -- assuming everyone is telling the truth! That's not by policy, but because the mods reflect the forum population - international and mostly male.
As far as I know, no bots, androids, extra-terrestrials, or people who have never touched a computer are mods either, so our diversity is lacking in a few ways.

Hmm, I was under the impression that you were a bot and/or android :confused:

I was going to offer my assistance, but it looks like you figured it out iBlue! Congrats, and good for you for contributing. And if you still feel like contributing anything further, I can't speak for MacRumors, but I am currently accepting bikini pics. ;) :cool:
You know, if you ever get a hand on those... let me know. :D

I wouldn't be so sure about that either if I were you. :p
