I understand that iOS uses .png files for icons and similar graphics. I'm curious if there is a standard application for creating custom png files? Also, is there any other file type used in iOS for graphics besides .png?

Use whatever image app you like. Obviously Photoshop is popular but any one will do. You can of course save your PS image in png or jpeg or something else.

You can use jpeg or png or others. png has transparency. jpeg can take up less memory on disk. Both will take up the same ram for the same dimensions on screen.

In the early days there was some performance advantage for png over jpeg but I think that's not true any more.

I personally use png, as it supports transparency.

My workflow, which is probably unlike anyone else's, is:
1.) Draw my image in Keynote or Numbers.
2.) Drag select everything you want, and copy.
3.) Open it in a free program I downloaded called ClipEdit, available here:
http://www.everydaysoftware.net/clipedit/
(Go to File > New > Clipping from Clipboard)
4.) Copy again.
5.) Open it in Preview
(Go to File > New from Clipboard)
6.) Crop.
7.) Save.
8.) Drag file to Xcode.

Excessively complicated? Probably. Works? Perfectly.
(I use ClipEdit between the other apps because otherwise Preview will fill in the background of the image as white instead of transparent.)
