So I'm gonna bring my PS3 to my dorm room in a few weeks, but I'm going to need to purchase a TV for it, since I don't have a computer monitor, either. And I figure that it's more economical to just get a TV rather than a computer monitor since I use a laptop 99.9% of the time, and TV's are well... also TV's.

So, I'm thinking that 32" is a nice size for practical usage as well as portability... but many of them on the market are 720p. Should I splurge and go with the 1080p ones, though? I plan on using it for COD:MW3... if that's any help haha

If the TV is more than about 5 or 6 feet from you, you'll have difficulty seeing the difference between 720 and 1080.

If you have extra money, you can't go wrong with the extra resolution and the PS3 outputs in 1080 quite nicely. However if you are getting a 32" TV the difference is pretty minor, however anything bigger than a 32" 1080 becomes more worth it.
