I have decided to surprise my husband with an iPad 2 as an early Christmas gift (he's buying one for me but I'm going to be sneaky and buy one for him as well). Anyway, I want to get him a case. I know his tastes pretty well, and I think he will dig one of these, but wanted to get some male perspective. Also, if anyone has either of these cases, please feel free to chime in with your thoughts!

Any help is much appreciated!

Edited to add: I also found this, figured I'd add it here.

The Dodo is a safer choice, looks like a nice, basic case. The other one is a bit weird looking

Are these the only ones in your mind? I can recommend the one I use if you want.

I think that case choices boil down whether he will: 1). be mostly watching/consuming, 2). working/typing; or, 3). a combination of 1 & 2. Once you figure out the function the subtle differences in form are easier to decide amongst.

Never understood comments like this. Men aren't all the same just as women aren't all the same. If you know his tastes then go with his tastes, not the tastes of other men (or women). I wouldn't choose any of the above and it has nothing to do with my gender -- it's just personal preference.

Is there no one else that knows him well that you can talk to on the matter? It seems like that would be more useful than polling random people of a given gender.

I would agree with takeshi74. Like him, I would not choose any of the linked cases myself, I would choose the one I purchased. It was the best choice for me. All of us are different. You could ask 100 men what case they would prefer and maybe get 100 different answers. If you are unsure which one would suit him best and want a second opinion, does he have any other family or friends who you could ask?

you should rethink that choice of the dodocase.

these type of wood cases are made by a number of different manufacturers and they suffer from a big problem. after a while, the friction fit in the corners that they rely on to keep the ipad in the wood frame starts to 'loosen up'. i saw a youtube of a disgruntled customer who demonstrated just how easy it is for their ipad to come out of the case. i would avoid at all costs for that reason alone, not to mention that they're thick, bulky and on the heavier side.

nor would i recommend the apple smartcover. [my private joke is anyone who buys a smartcover isn't all that smart!] if you do wind up getting that, at least get the Zum case to make sure the smartcover doesn't [accidentally] detach.

my suggestion would be to look thru some of the threads in this forum and see what appeals to you, or rather your husband.

i use the marware ceo hybrid case and think it's a good case for either sex. it's a folio type case, discrete looking without attracting too much attention (you don't want to attract attention with an ipad in the nyc subway system), offers excellent protection for the glass along with four corner protection, not insanely expensive like the leather cases, and low maintenance - the carbon fiber does a decent job hiding fingerprints and oil, etc and is easy to wipe down. the case does a nice job of covering the speaker area (instead of leaving a bare patch of aluminum showing) while not muting the sound output and it leaves sufficient space around the connector port so if you use accessories like the camera connection kit, it's easy to plug it in without having to take the tablet out of the case.

it's not the best case if you like to have hands-free operation, rather than popping the corners out and using the slots in the cover underside as shown in the video review, i reverse the cover into a A-position and do that instead.

a review covering two of the popular folio cases.

Canadian Eh!
Dodocase has amazing customer service, anyone I've talked to has said the same. If that does happen to yours they'll send you more bumper things for the corners.

I personally like the Fieldfolio because it looks similar but uses a different material to hold the iPad in place.

He will be doing a lot of watching. Internet, movies, television, some games.

I'm asking for other's opinions because I have never owned an iPad and I don't know how functional these are. I've actually crossed out the first link because I noticed it has a simple, small velcro closure that apparently doesn't hold the iPad in very well. The Dodo apparently isn't very good for watching movies and such.

I am coming here and asking for opinions because I don't know a single person with an iPad and there is a forum full of iPad owners right here. I don't think it's such a crazy notion, just want to get my husband something nice and functional.

go with the portenzo case...

shop.portenzo.com

im not sure if this has changed but the dodocase have had issues keeping the ipad in the foam holders. there are many youtube videos about it. the portenzo case hold extremely well and will not fall out if held upside down

What about giving some kind of fancy "IOU" certificate for the case of his choice?

For lots of people, a case is a personal choice. I guess others may not care all that much, but I doubt that my spouse would have picked out the case that I have on my iPad.
