I work in the music department at a Barnes and Noble and I am noticing a growing trend of copy protected music, the new Dave Matthews and Kasabian to name a few. The record company that seems to be putting them out is BMG. They have an email to send comments. I guess you can listen to them on a computer, using Windows Media Player, but who would want to do that. My question is, can a mac see the aiff files? They have to be there, CD players (most) can't read secure WMA. I am interested because I want to buy the Kasabian CD, but I don't want to support the infringement on fair use rights.

You should be able to buy it, and if you can't play it return it as defective. Yeah, I know that doesn't really answer your question... but other than buying it and trying it out, I don't know of anyway to know for sure.

I have a 'copy protected' Red Hot Chilli Peppers CD, and iTunes (both Windows and Mac) can rip it fine. Of course, the CDs you're referring to may have a different form of protection.

I just bought the new Dave Matthews Band CD, Stand Up! iTunes ripped it just fine! Go ahead and get it!

Sweet. I figured it would rip fine... it is just really annoying they think they can get away with it. In the U.S. at least, we have the right to rip the CD and make as many copies as we want. Thanks for the replies.

I've got the Kasabian CD and it ripped fine on my mac, although that the American versions might be pressed differently.
I dont like the CD very much I have to say. I'll sell you my copy if you like for cheap. PM me if this interests you.

I pre-ordered "Stand Up" before I knew about the copy protection. When I got it, I was able to import it into iTunes and put it on my iPod with no problems.

I can get it cheep at my work with my discount... it doesn't sound too great to me either... but one of my friends swears by it, so I figure I would give it a go. When you bought the CD did it have a sticker on the plastic wrap informing the buyer of the copyright protection? Although I don't agree with the practice, at least they are informing the buyer, more so than a brief note on the back of the CD in small print.

There is so much software available to remove the protection, stuff that takes the songs and takes them on the HD and copies them...
