I don't think so. Your proc absolutely KILLS you, if that was like a 2.4 GHz P4 I'd say you could.

I'd say more like 500 bucks, although I'm not really up to date on PC resell prices.

I sold my (hopefully last ever) PC last summer and was only able to get $400 for it despite the fact that it was a loaded 2.4GHz P4 that cost over $1,200 just 18 months earlier. I'm afraid that resale on PCs, even for ones that are not over the hill, are practically pennies on the dollar. Thankfully that is not the case at all for Macs when it comes to their resale value though. :)

I am currently debating whether to buy a Dell 24" LCD Monitor for 1100$ to replace my current TV set which my Dell Box is hocked up to for DivX Video or to sell the Dell and get a nice new iMac G5 20". The Dell works fine but I would like to get rid of it and go totally Mac if possible, but I'd like to sell it for enough that I pay about the same for the iMac as I would pay for the Dell LCD. Anyways, here are the specs:

Dell Optiplex GX150 Desktop

1.4GHz Pentium III-S with 512kB L2 Cache
512MB RAM (maxed out)
80GB HD
NEC Region Free/Lock Free Dual Layer 16x DVD Burner
Belkin Firewire 400 Card
M-Audio Audiophile Sound (This is a high end digital sound card)
ATI Radeon 7200 Graphics 32MB DDR (I believe, have to double check later)
802.11G/B/A Wireless LAN 3Com USB Adapter

System runs smoothly, only gripes, after the CPU upgrade it doesn't recognize the system fan anymore and gives an error message during startup, the fan is running though, I checked repeatedly.
What do you think? 800 Bucks possible for this thing? I really would love an iMac.
Regards,

Ahmed

You want $800 for that?

I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a system with those specs. And that's being generous.

For ~$814 you can get a refurb Dell Dimension 8400 with these specs:

Pentium 4 Processor 630 with HT Technology (3GHz, 800 FSB / 2MB cache)
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
1 GB DDR SDRAM, 400 MHz (2 DIMM)
250 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
256MB PCI Express ATI Radeon X800 SE
56Kbps Data/Fax Modem
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (D) Card w/Dolby 5.1, and IEEE 1394 capability
16X DVD ROM Drive
16x DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability

You might want to just keep the system around for a second PC or something instead. I know that if you were to buy the components separately now it'd cost more than $200, but because technology advances so quickly newer and better parts can be had now for much less. Only an idiot would pay $800 for that. Sorry, but it's the truth.

LOL, a 1.4 GHz P4 and a Radeon 7200, and you're hoping for $800? Boy, you're in for a big disappointment.
LOL :D

Oh, and he didn't say it was a P4, it's a 1.4GHz Pentium III

A geographical oddity
I think you could get a good bit of value from the burner and the sound card. I'm guessing that you would get 30% of the card + 60% of the burner + $50-100 for the rest of the machine. I guess you can do the math there. Stuff is just too cheap these days.

If the person person isn't the kind that would put time into researching/wouldn't care about the value of the card and burner, I would guess $300. "Make DVDs? I just watch movies. Are you one of those movie-stealing commies?" :)

I would also gut it and sell the parts. You won't get much but you will get more for the parts than the whole. The quick and easy way to rid yourself of it is to find a friend or family member that needs a basic computer to check email and get online. Sell it to them for maybe $250. Although, I have known people who would sell it to family for much more than that but I cannot do that in good conscience.

Resale value on PCs is not very good at all - unfortunately for you Ahmed. Personally, I usually keep my old PCs around for miscellaneous tasks, like web or files servers - or I will sell them for cheap or give them to friends and family.

If you want to move to Mac, you still might want to keep your PC, as you might need it for a particular piece of software or something. I'm guessing you might need that money to help with the iMac purchase though. I just can't see you getting more than about $250 for that machine. I'm not sure how much that pro audio card costs, but the rest of it is quite old compared to what is available today. I just built the following system foy sister using all new parts from newegg:

- AMD Athlon 3000+ (Winchester Core) (800 MHz bus)
- Chaintech VNF4/Ultra mobo
- 1 GB Corsair value RAM
- Leadtek nVidia 6200TC GPU - it is PCIe w/64 MB dedicated & up to 256 MB via TurboCache
- 120 GB SATA 150 HD - Samsung
- Lite-on CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-/+R w/Double Layer support
- Antec SLK3000-B case
- Rosewill 450W PSU

Total Cost: $667 (shipping included)

x86 hardware is just too cheap to get any worth-while resale value out of old PC hardware. Since you cannot build your own Mac and there is such a premium on Apple hardware the resale value remains higher, longer.

Good luck to you though, whatever you decide to do.

Agreed. I think he can get these price for the components...

--1.4GHz Pentium III-S with 512kB L2 Cache *and* motherboard = ~$40 since a new 1.8GHz AMD Duron and motherboard can be had for ~$50, and it would blow the PIII away.
--512MB RAM (maxed out) = ~$50
--80GB HD = ~$20 since a *new* 80GB Hitachi can be had for $30 after rebate
--NEC Region Free/Lock Free Dual Layer 16x DVD Burner = ~$50 which is what they still go for
--Belkin Firewire 400 Card = ~$20-$30 since a new one goes for about $40
--M-Audio Audiophile Sound (This is a high end digital sound card) = ~$80
--ATI Radeon 7200 Graphics 32MB DDR (I believe, have to double check later) = ~$10, maybe $20
--802.11G/B/A Wireless LAN 3Com USB Adapter = ~$20

Total = ~$330 tops.

Unfortunately, $800 is far out of the range of what you could expect. I've been in your position before myself - trying to dispose of a PC to get a Mac. Instead of ridding myself of the PC, I just held onto it because I would have had to sell it at a tremendous loss, which I couldn't justify.

You may be able to get about $200-$250 tops for your Dell. And most people would not consider buying a Pentium III unless they were in a true financial burden. If I were you, I'd hold onto it and turn it into a backup or file server.

However, I wish you luck and hope you can get that iMac G5!

The PC in my signature which is a P4 3.0GHz w/ HT, PCI Express graphics, 768DDR2 RAM, DVD 16x +-RW, Audigy sound and other goodies only ended up getting me a trade for a G4 400 Gigabit Ethernet work about $400 bucks with the upgrades in it. You have no chance of getting anywhere near eve $150 or $100. Sorry man, PCs just don't hold value worth a darn.

If you throw in a modest monitor and printer, you might have a shot at getting $200 to $250 for it. I just sold an AMD2700+ with 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, eVGA 9600SE 128MB Video, wireless keyboard & mouse, ethernet and firewire, w/19" CRT for $600 bucks which is about what I had in it minus the monitor. Thought I got a pretty good deal noting the crazy PC prices these days.

You should look in your local paper or eBay and see what systems of your calibre will bring. As others have said, you'll be disappointed if $800 was your target.

I say $150 tops.

You can get Dell Celerons new for $299... I know people that have bought them.

I've seen Dell deals as low as $350(USD) for a P4 2.8, 80gig, 512, cdrw, free printer and free 17" lcd. I almost bought one just for the heck of it but would rather spend my 350 somewhere in Apple Land.

Sorry to mostly chime in with the others, but I would seriously consider selling at least the M-Audio separately, and possibly also the FW and 802.11 cards. The M-Audio is honestly probably worth almost as much as the rest of the system put together, and how likely is it that anyone who can really take advantage of it is going to buy your system, unless you were to sell it as some kind of audio workstation (which would mean you'd be including a Cubase or Protools or somesuch license....)

If you eBay'd those three cards, you could probably get $200 or more combined. And then sell the rest of the computer for whatever.

I've certainly never seen THAT good of a deal from Dell! At anywhere near that price it would be a steal.

Haha. That would be one heck of a deal. However, with rebates and the savings codes I could see being able to get close to that. My P4 3.0 with 17" LCD was upgraded from P4 2.8 and I think I paid $549 after rebate and that was with the 17" ultra sharp display.

I was going to say...I thought their 17" LCDs went for around $200 even on sale, so $350 for one with a P4 system as well seemed to be a bit of a stretch.

Yep, this was a coupon deal I linked off of gotapex.com several weeks ago. One of my family members was able to get in on it. It was after a $100 rebate but still. I prolly should have gotten it just for the heck of it but at the time didn't realize what the going rate for pc's was.
