I have a 2006 blackbook. My computer was running fine, and I left it for about an hour. When I returned the computer was off. I turned it on, I heard the startup sound - white screen - apple logo - then the twirling "thinker", and then it shuts off instantly.

I do hear a faint HD squeal right after the screen goes black, but it sounds similar to the sound the computer makes if you were to hold down on the power button. Which leads me to believe that the sound is not a cause, it's an effect.

So I don't think this is a HD failure... any idea what it might be or what sort of diagnostics I could run?

Maybe the CPU fan has failed and it shut down due to overheating? Which would make sense that it shut off after you tried turning it on again.

A faulty hard drive will not give the symptom, that's for sure.
