I live in the UK. I drive a car with a 3.2l engine (a Porsche Boxster S). So the answer is
But I can only do that as I do not drive to work so don't do that many miles. If I needed a car that I could drive to work I suspect I'd have something more fuel efficient. Like, say, the Lotus Elise I used to have that easily returned 35mpg.

And I would join you, but with an electric scooter, 2 wheels to start, 3/4 wheels when old age finally shows-up. 😉 😛
But I would have to give up schlepping people about too. 🙁

I'd be screwed. I live out in the country, about 30 miles from my work. In my area of eastern Pennsyltucky the roads are brutal on smaller cars. For that reason, and the winters, I drive either a SUV (toyota 4runner) or a full size truck.

Same as now - Jeep Grand Cherokee. I flat out love this car. Lots of space and true four wheel drive for those upstate New York winters. Of course it completely sucks on gas mileage. My commute to work is less than five miles round trip, so I don't care a whole lot how much gas costs.

Oh my....I'm not exactly sure what they sell...I see them on the highway every once in a while. Who knew they would fit 4? My kids will be so disappointed...they love riding in trunks. 😱
Have to agree here. I get to deal with both worlds since I live part time in CT and part time in the UK. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee limited for CT. Could not deal with the winters without 4 wheel drive. For London I have a Volkswagen Golf GTI 4 door. I like the Mini Cooper S but there is so much more interior room on the Golf.

I really don't have any idea. I do see those little cars and wonder what the heck those people are thinking driving them in Houston. It's a mixture of bad drivers and really, really big Trucks. I would hate to get into an accident in one of those cars.
Maybe the ones sold in the US have different engines?

I only drive if I have to. I'm lucky enough to live in a rural area but have fantastic public transport connections. Buses into my 2 nearest cities and 4 nearest towns, trains that can get me into those cities much faster (and then anywhere else). There's a roundabout nearby with a horse and carriage warning sign.
That ~£1.30 isn't too bad for me.

Imho, SMART is a glorified golf cart and an insult to real cars everywhere. So I'd get something with 4-cylinder performance that's relatively frugal on fuel. A Subaru or Civic Si perhaps.
