I've had an interesting problem with iMessage since it was introduced and wondering if others are having this issue.

It seems I have to have the full number in my contacts for it to work correctly. What I mean to say is that I can't have just 123-123-1234 but have to enter the full number including the +. For example, +1-123-123-1234.

As an extension to this, I'm in Japan and its a bit more weird. In country you would use a number like 080-1234-1234 but internationally you have to use +81-80-1234-1234 and that is the number I have to have in the contact for iMessage to work.

Since most everyone I know does not put the international codes in front of phone numbers in their contacts, I can't understand why Apple servers can't know that +81-80-1234-1234 is the same as 080-1234-1234. I can more understand the problem with US numbers since I'm in Japan.

Lastly, my Caller ID in iMessage has the international code as well.

What have your experiences been with iMessage and phone numbers that don't include the international code?
