View Full Version : Controlling iBook with broken screen

I have an old iBook with a cracked screen (can't see anything on it) that I'd like to setup to use as a media server for my home network. The iBook works fine other than the display issue, and I could control it easily using screen sharing, but the problem is that I don't have a monitor to use to set everything up. Is there any way using firewire or something that I can configure it for screen sharing without a monitor?

Connect the iBook to your iMac via Firewire 400 cable and start the iBook in Target (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661) Disk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Disk_Mode) Mode (http://guides.macrumors.com/Target_Disk_Mode) and then start the iMac and hold down the OPTION key after the startup sound chimes and then select the iBook's HDD as boot disk. That way you should be able to configure the iBook, if the iBook has a Mac OS X version that the iMac came with (if the iMac came with 10.4.2, then the iBook should have that at least), and if the iMac has a PPC CPU. But even if it is an Intel iMac (I can't see your signature right now), it may be worth a try.
