Wants to do what I did, put a black backplate on a white front.

No. The pins and rails are different.

how about for the front glass? would an iPhone 4s' front glass work on an iPhone 4?

Again, no. The 4S front glass assembly is different then the 4. It closely resembles the screen and fitting of the GSM iPhone 4, but they are not interchangeable.
