shutting off CRT on G3 iMac

I have the video on my CRT iMac mirrored via the VGA to a larger external monitor. Is there any way to shut of the CRT? Also, are there any kind of hacks that will allow you set the resolution higher than 1024x800?
 
I remember reading an article that said the only way to turn the monitor off was to crack the case open.

Your resolution is dependent on the video card and crt. You usually can't get anymore than your max, this is especially relevant on LCDs.
