Black Friday kicked off on the day after Thanksgiving and frequently offers customers short term sales on many products. While Apple does participate, their discounts tend to be rather small (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/11/23/apples-2011-black-friday-discounts-for-ipad-2-macbook-air-macbook-pro-imac-and-more/). Other online retailers can sometimes fill the gap to offer more enticing offers.

Sales Tax

National retailers such as Apple and Best Buy charge local sales tax on all orders. So, the advantage of using other online-only retailers is not getting charged that sales tax at the time of order (though you are typically expected to report it later). Local sales taxes are automatically charged for the following retailers in the following states:

- Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=linkcode-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/Black-Friday-After-Thanksgiving-Sale/b/ref=bf2011_gwcsm_tv?ie=UTF8&node=384082011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-csm-1&pf_rd_r=0ADPEEQVQN1YYDZESWD1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1331646882&pf_rd_i=507846): Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington
- MacMall (http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-462641-10936991): North Carolina, Illinois, New York, California, Tennessee, Minnesota, Colorado, and Wisconsin.

So, if you are in one of those states, it may make sense to look elsewhere or simply buy locally anyway if the savings are comparable.

iPad 2s

BestBuy was offering (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Tablets-iPads-E-Readers/iPad/pcmcat209000050007.c?id=pcmcat209000050007&searchresults=1&searchterm=ipad+2) $45 off all iPad 2 models, but it appears to be sold out online. You may have luck at your local stores.

MacMall is offering $25-$45 discounts (http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-462641-10707517?url=http://www.macmall.com/n/Ipad-Black-Friday-Sale/macCustomPages-4407?q=macCustomPages-1007) on iPad 2s as well depending on model. They appear to still be in stock.

Apple's online store (http://store.apple.com/us) is offering $41-$61 off the iPad 2 depending on model. Stock should be good from Apple.

Discounts on Other Apple Products

Apple's online sales prices will be on their online Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/), but their discounts will generally be the worst for most products (iPad 2 exception above), especially when sales tax is included.

Here's a list of prices at MacMall, Amazon and Apple Online's prices across the range of Apple's products.

Click on prices to link directly to product.
Best prices are listed in bold. Prices may fluctuate during the day.

Note that Best Buy has particularly good deal on an 11" MacBook Air for $849 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple%26%23174%3B+-+MacBook%26%23174%3B+Air+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processor+/+11.6%22+Display+/+2GB+Memory+/+64GB+Flash+Storage/3108172.p?id=1218379465221&skuId=3108172&st=macbook%20air&cp=1&lp=3) ($150 off), though they are out of stock on their online store.

Others Discounts of Interest

- $100 iTunes Gift Card (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=category&id=pcmcat258800050011) - for $80

- 1Password ($49.99 -> $24.99) (http://appshopper.com/mac/productivity/1password)

Price Matching

We've heard that retail Apple Stores will price match on Black Friday with other authorized retailers if asked.

Please note that prices may fluctuate during the day, though we try to keep on top of them. Several of the vendors listed are affiliate partners with MacRumors and referred sales may benefit the site financially.

I just might have to jump on that MacMall offer for the 13" MBA. I'm kinda irked that I missed out on the Best Buy offering that just ended yesterday but since they charge tax where I live then it would've been only a few bucks cheaper, anyway.

I think I'll buy nothing this year, Apple or anything else. Take a look at the economy

By choosing to not buy anything because of the economy, you're actually making things worse (not better).

People who are spending money this holiday season, especially with big ticket items, are actually contributing to economy and it's recovery.

Spending more> company profits> company hires more people> less people on unemployment
Spending less> company losses money> company shuts down> more people on unemployement

Which is the one thing I just might have blown the Christmas fund on. The Uk prices are just unreal, I know it's always been that way, but I'm going to wait until I come home before buying anything else.

Some good deals around though...The Adobe discount is a good one, I will check out the UK prices later (got an email just haven't dissected it yet.

Those discounts look like Amazon's everyday low price. Expect deeper discounts on Friday - I know that is how it worked last year with a $150 discount off the base 15" MBP. Then on BF weekend (saturday and sunday) that discount was $130 (that's when I bought mine), then Monday is went to about $1,710.

I also don't get taxed from buying content from iTunes.

Anyway, I ordered my cards this morning and I'm still waiting for my redemption codes :(

Come on, I don't think he meant spend money you DON'T HAVE, just that not spending also has a negative impact on the economy (i.e. if you don't buy anything, then retailers don't make any money, which means jobs are cut, which means less people buying, etc). We all get that half the reason we are in the predicament we are in right now is due to people buying everything on credit. No one is saying we should go down that road again....

Thank you Amazon! I was trying to decide between a 13" MBP and an iMac 21" since they both cost the same, ended up ordering the iMac. Haven't had a desktop in over 8 years but since the little netbook I'm using right now is more than enough to browse while in the living room the iMac should do just fine in my bedroom, not to mention it should last longer.

Had $277 in credit from trade ins from all my 360 games add the $149 discount and no $110 tax, I ended up only paying 726!

Huh? You mean if we don't all go out and buy MacBooks tomorrow Apple will go out of business? When we buy Apple products all we are doing is padding that cool $80 billion then have laying around. In some cases, that's fine. But don't give someone a guilt-trip for being frugal during hard times. Most of us have to worry about our families, not the state of the economy. Besides, ironically, it's reckless spending that not only drives our economy, but it got us into this mess.

Amazon's been really sketchy with their deals this year. They seem to make very small amounts of their inventory available for deals and some of the items had price markups right before the deal to make it look like the price was lower. I was looking to pick up a hard drive and noted that on two of the ones they had deals on, the prices on the hard drives had gone up the day before the sale, and then the deal price was actually higher than the previous regular price. I was also trying to pick up the iPod touch. I was clicking repeatedly the second the "Select Options" button became available but still didn't get it. And once the deal is over, I'm sure it'll be available in-stock, ready to ship at the regular price. In other words, there definitely is a designated amount of stock for the sale.

National retailers such as Apple and Best Buy charge local sales tax on all orders. So, the advantage of using other online-only retailers is not getting charged that sales tax in many of the states.
How is it an "advantage" to have to send in the taxes yourself Macrumors? Oh, you mean you don't yet understand that just because the seller hasn't collected the sales tax you the citizen are still expected to send them in anyway? Sounds like Macrumors should consult a lawyer before making such inferences. Otherwise Macrumors might be found liable for suggesting consumers can cheat on their sales taxes and use taxes so long as they shop around for a seller than doesn't do the collecting for them. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be making a public case for tax evasion in the middle of the biggest debt crisis in generations.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57331095/apple-store-suffers-black-friday-blackout/

It's pretty typical for Apple to bring down their store before changing prices or products. Also, it's typical for Apple to operate on their own (California/Pacific) time, thus for them "Black Friday" starts at midnight California time, not NY time. Not unusual at all, nor a "fail".

Are you serious? Nobody pays taxes on internet purchases unless the seller adds them. EVER.

That would be in error as I keep careful track of all online purchases and pay my use tax every year. Not only is it the law, it is the right thing to do as these taxes go towards the services that benefit us all.

Taxes have existed long before the internet and what you owe didn't change just because you bought it from a computer screen. What you seem to be saying is that nobody understands how to determine their actual tax liabilities, which may very well be true, but you'd still think they'd still be smart enough not to admit that in public.

They really are. I've been watching a few items all day and they've been fluctuating. MS Office just jumped up to $74.99 in the last few minutes.

Hopefully they drop the 128/4 11" MBA a bit more! $1139.99 is still a good regular discount price though, so if it doesn't drop further, I won't feel badly about buying it at that price.

How is it an "advantage" to have to send in the taxes yourself Macrumors? Oh, you mean you don't yet understand that just because the seller hasn't collected the sales tax you the citizen are still expected to send them in anyway? Sounds like Macrumors should consult a lawyer. Otherwise they might be found liable for suggesting consumers nationwide can cheat on their sales taxes and use taxes so long as they shop around for a seller than doesn't do the collecting for them.

They charge sales tax if they are in business in your state or have a warehouse. It's not that they choose not to. Amazon has a warehouse somewhere in Kansas, so I have to pay sales tax on Amazon purchases.

If you buy most Apple products off Apples own refurb site, you can save up to 30% in some cases, much much better than these silly Black Friday prices and they are available everyday. Not to mention with Apple care you get the same warranty on new products so if they fail you get a new one replacing it anyhow. Seems silly to run out and spend what ever to save a few bucks on BF when you can typically save as much if not more any day of the week here ---> http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTM3NTA4MTI

I'm so glad I didn't wait for Apple's Black Friday sale to buy my MacBook Pro 15". I took my chances last week and got a 10% off code for Currys (UK) and got £154.90 off, rather than the measly £81 off Apple is offering.

These savings are a bust. Sales are an incentive to buy products. A good product speaks for itself and doesn't need any extra incentives. You can get these deals anytime by using the Apple Education Store or by finding reseller/online discounts. Black Friday is just a day for retail stores to sell off merchandise that wouldn't be sold without a discount to begin with. Let's take Dick's Sporting Goods as an example. 50% off everything in the store!* *except Nike and any other worthwhile brand.

Somebody gets it.

Boycott crass Christmas commercialism.

You guys make me laugh, expecting much better from Apple on Black Friday. You can go to the Black Friday summary page here on MacRumors to see what the Apple BF discounts have been for the last few years, and they have been consistent. The $101 discount on the computers is standard fare. Anyone wanting a standard item could have estimated what the Apple BF price would have been in comparing prices the last few weeks. I did it when shopping for an Air a few weeks ago. I first calculated what the Apple BF price was going to be, with the estimated $101 discount, and then found an even lower price on Amazon for the same spec Air, without sales tax, so I knew not to wait for BF and went ahead and bought on Amazon. Even better the Amazon price has gone up since then.

Black Friday is clearly not about top end products.

This morning, there is no record of my order whatsoever!! Is calling Apple the only way to resolve this? Is there an email address I can use instead? I'm traveling so it isn't convenient for me to call.

I called in and the lady said that "because of the high volume of orders, it might take a while for the system to register the order". She asked for my order number and I'm like "I didn't copy it down, I thought it would get emailed to me".

So the only solution as of right now is to wait and keep refreshing.

That is a relief! Same thing happened with me. I was on the phone waiting for an Apple rep but ended the call as soon as I saw others here have the same problem.

Just checked again and all is well. My order is now being processed. I guess it was a momentary glitch. Also finally got an email confirmation.

Looks like the orders are going through as my order has appeared on my history page and I got a confirmation email.

Just added an iPod Touch to my Amazon basket: $178. Price dropped while I was in other sections of the site.

Too bad I already bought my iPod Touch last month. Would have loved the discounts!

It is good practice to make either a screen shot of your transactions or create a pdf of them.

Maybe for some things. I was there this afternoon, and they weren't offering the $80 for $100 iTunes Gift Cards deal in store.

I went to Best Buy today, found the iTunes gift card rack, there was a sheet announcing the "$100 card for $80" and then in *very* tiny type in the bottom right hand corner it said "expires 11/24/2011"
That's Thanksgiving DAY!

I grabbed a card anyways and took it to checkout but asked if it was $80 before she rang it up. It was $80. no tax. AFAIK this deal ends today (11/26) despite what BS Best Buy puts on the sign.

The only thing I bought at Best Buy this year.

It's impossible to contribute to a dried out economy when the products that you are buying are made overseas. You are contributing to more jobs overseas and not stateside. Things will not go well in the years to come.

You don't want to save $11 off of an iPod nano?

By choosing to not buy anything because of the economy, you're actually making things worse (not better).

People who are spending money this holiday season, especially with big ticket items, are actually contributing to economy and it's recovery.

Spending more> company profits> company hires more people> less people on unemployment
Spending less> company losses money> company shuts down> more people on unemployement

FYI.
Amazon has the base 15" MacBook pro for $1599 right now. That's $200 off.

@nippyjun: Thanks for posting that; I was able to get another $110 off my recent MBP purchase. I wouldn't have known if you hadn't posted!
