I listen to almost nothing but Korean music, so Gackt is probably right up my alley. I've heard of him before a lot, but never really looked into it. Not a fan of Japanese music, but I guess it's worth a shot.

EDIT: I've never heard anyone who could span every genre so flawlessly. I have to say it... Get one whole album of Waltari, preferably "Big Bang" or "So fine!" and come again.. Rap, techno & death metal on same album by same band and with real instruments. :D

Ahh they are all so good ... but THE SIXTH DAY ~singles collection~ is an excellent taste of what he does.

Nothing says "classy" like judging a musical artist based on how they look ... you didn't even mention what you think of his music.

FYI, Utada's EXODUS album sucked and the only reason anyone cares about Puffy is because they did some song for Teen Titans and got their own show. They're "so-so" talent wise.

im a huge fan of Gackt! He used to be in a visual kei band, Malice Mizer
(this band produces GREAT music as well..too bad they have disbanded in yr 2000) but is now on a solo. my fave track by Gackt is "emu ~for my dear~". He wrote this song for his good friend, Kami (former drummer in malice mizer) who died. sad song.. and NICE too! Gackt is a self admitted bi.. but hes leaning towards women. or he would have hit on HYDE! HYDE is a gorgeous guy.. he was Gackt's co-actor in the movie "moon child" and also the vocalist for a jrock band L'arc~en~ciel (a GREAT jrock band too!). Gackt claims his birthday to be on the 4th july 1540 and refuses to reveal his age :( it doesnt matter.. i still love u gackt!! my fave album by Gackt is definitely MARS!!!! and lastly.. his name is pronounced as either "garkto" or ga-ku-to.. not "gag"!

Gackt is vastly over-appreciated. I was by my friend today and wared 3 of his albums. Seriously.. he sucks big time. Singing is terrible, he seems to have trouble putting words on music.. I like "Uncontrol"s techno/sicko rhyme, although that has been done by many bands already... "Lust for blood" was complete Metallica S/M ripoff.

No wonder Japs are crazy when any Finnish band visits there, they seem to lack good artists.

I wish people would recognize that mainstream J-pop is the same fluff that is mainstream pop here—fun to listen to from time to time, but nothing of any real artistic merit. I like a good pop song from time to time, but when I want something that's really interesting or challenging I hit up the non-mainstream.

That said, check out my favorite Japanese band ever, Mono. They play some heavy post-rock, in the vein of Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky. I'm going to see them perform in Richmond in October, should be rocking awesome.

I thiught the original post was just a tad maudlin, that's all. I did some cursory reading on Gackt, and he does not seem like my type of artiste. Now, when he comes to iTunes US, I will give his stuff a listen and then I will give my SERIOUS opinion of his music. Until then, this is all fun for me: guys think he's a girl, I think he's a weirdo from the admittedly little I read about him, get over it!

Now, I also think Tom Waits and Elliot (RIP) are a little afffected and at times try too hard: I was making a comparison at a level that I only understood, being the strange bird that I am. Anyway, that's enough for now.

I really wish everyone would stop saying his music is commercialized crap because of a fifteen second clip on Apple. Of course singles are made to be commercial. Usually, the weirder/more unique stuff is saved for the B-Sides and albums.

Honestly, go download a full album of his or something. Don't feel bad about not buying it; if you don't like it, delete it. If you like it, buy it or just don't listen anymore.

Either way, you guys are making huge judgements based on very few facts.
