Ha, I figured. Although this post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=12570938), ironically about eliminating the vote buttons, is at -67

The up/down voting button, or idiot voting system as I call it, has reduced the collective IQ of this site by 24 points.

Has it reduced it, or brought it to light?

If you're going to have a voting system then have a system tied to it that allows users to ignore posts that have more than a certain number of negative votes. Assume those posts are truly stupid then you could read through a thread and ignore someone's dribble like someone waving his wiener around talking about how much more social he is than the next guy.

The problem is you're trying to implement a voting system on a site that has a collective age somewhere in the late teens coupled with people who have the maturity of a 7 year old. There are a lot of people on this site who are mindful and full of really great posts. Some obviously have varied posting habits ranging from the in your face BS to meaningful posts that truly try to help. Unfortunately, this voting system doesn't work here at all. There are too many people using it as though the down vote sends an auto-PM to the poster informing them of how utterly moronic they were in their post or something good like that. There is a group, which I imagine to be quite large, of people who do not really care if their post is voted up or down. I know I personally feel no better or worse about what I write simply because a pack of members down votes or up votes what I wrote.

This system is seriously silly and it was a silly idea to implement it now. I believe that if someone can show me how it has truly benefited the site then I would be surprised. On the other hand, if I can see just one thread where the voting system was used the way it was intended then I could probably show you 20 other threads where the voting system is misused. The damn purchase thread is a great example of the ineffectiveness of the system and the abuse brought on by random users.

For an answer I would suggest that the OP go through every post made on MR since the inception of the voting system and gather up all the stats. Then you will know.

Afterwards get back to us so we can know. We are on our collective end of our seats waiting to find out.

:D

I'll stop you right there. No such thread exists.

Any chance we can get an aggregate of total +/- votes for all posts by a single user? I'm curious about one in particular... :D (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?u=639436)

I asked this question before, here is Doctor Q's response

No, they aren't tracked by user although the data is in the database if somebody wrote suitable software to use it for something.

We've heard various suggestions for uses of the vote information, but so far it's used only to select posts to show on individual news story pages, using a complex secret formula.

Don't tell anyone, but the secret formula is number_of_positive_votes - number_of_negative_votes.

Does MR keep statistic of our Up/Down votes?

I think I've decided to embrace the system. I'm going to randomly up and down posts with no thought.

I guess the system could view it as a bull's hat, but I just like that this past tense of the word slipped through the cracks lol

"No Iphone 5 release this person know secret inside" is hilarious, why was Pink banned? I'm surprised the voting system is still around, thought it would of been thrown out by now. Oh well.

It'd be interesting to note the halo effect of votes also, for me at least, but then I'm incredibly dull.

Say for example a post is already sitting at +10, or -10. Would that alter ones inclination to vote for it in a particular way.

That's a PhD right there.

I would say Yes and No.

If I see that someone is getting down voted, but I agree with their statement I will vote up (I generally make it a habit to not participate in the voting, but if I agree with a post I sometimes will up vote)

But in the case of the first link I posted, that was obviously a halo affect in that it became almost like a contest to see just how many down votes that user can get. The result was -353
