2012 Mac laptop line:
MacBook Air - Ultraportable
MacBook Pro - Aluminum lovers / Professional users
MacBook - Laptop for everyone?

Would you want them to bring back the MacBook?
$899 for the white one and supposedly $999 for black, considering that the white plastic is cheaper than the aluminum.
HD FaceTime camera. Re-thought of bottom that can't supposedly peal off. Unibody plastic design. New Thunderbolt port added.
4 GB of ram
250 GB hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 3000
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor?

That would be nice for people seeking more storage space, but i dont think that it would come with 4GB of ram. The macbook was supposed to be the part of the low end of the spectrum.

Apple will never go back to plastic in my opinion.

Sorry to say, but the MacBook is dead, long live the MBA and MBP!

The reason why I say this is that the original alu-Macbook was rebranded as the 13" MBP, the newer plastic one got stuck between the 13" MBA and the 13" MBP.

This gave the Macbook only a small playingfield to operate within.
If people's criteria was portablility, they went for the MBA faster and if the criteria was processingpower it became the MBP.
Both had the alu design, which is better, looks better on a portable Mac and is more in demand by the customers, so giving a new Macbook a plastic body wouldn't be considered wise.
Giving it an alu body would again decrease the price barrier with the MBP series, which would make the smaller extra costs worth for more people to buy a MBP instead of a Macbook.

The macbook as a "generalist" got stuck between a rock and a hardplace.
Add to that that we will probably be seeing in 2012 a 15" MBA and the playingfield for a Macbook just got decimated.

It would not be profitable for Apple to bring out a Macbook, even if it came in 13" and 15".

We can't stop evolution and that means that some hardware lines will be discontinued (generalist) and other florish (specialist).

With MBPs in 13", 15" and 17" and MBAs in 11", 13" and in 2012 a 15", Apple can service every niche in the netbook/notebook range.
