backing up 4S to different computer?

How can you back up the iphone 4S to a different computer than it is usually synced to? When I tried this (on a new computer) it asked to register the phone again. I only want to create a backup.

You can't unless you want everything deleted off your phone.
 
is this something entirely new on the iphone 4s? Mind you I just meant a backup, not sync. I could create backups on multiple/different computers just fine with the iphone4. Thanks!
