here is the rumor http://59.167.34.25/news/0505powerbookg5.html

but it could be fake as thinksecret.coms ip is 209.50.251.27

still it is interesting.

That would be lackluster... If true (which it probably is).

If it was real don't you think ThinkSecret would have a link on its main page. Some things are just to good to be true

there would definetly be a link on the front page if this poop was real.

and im glad it isnt, those specs are nothing to clap about haha

Noticed. Anyone want to share what the specs were? (albeit they were probably fake) I'm really curious.

1.5 and 1.6 g5 with 512 ram standard, dual dvi output, i dont really remember much else, i just really glanced at it since we all know its BS

Basically 1.6 GHz on the high end. That's about all I can remember.

Maybe Think Secret thought someone was publishing their (trade) secrets. ;)

If 1.5/1.6ghz G5 PBs were going to be coming out it wouldn't even be as good as the current G4s...just more heat. What's the point?

EDIT: I don't see the PB lineup getting G5s unless they can run the 12" with something around 1.7 and the high end around 2.0ghz or better.

Actually, if the specs were too high, THAT is when I would disbelieve it. :p

Low end specs are more believable to me in a Powerbook.

I don't think so. There would be no advantage to having one of those powerbooks than one of the current one. and there would be a lot of disadvantages.

It's back. But in case it disappears again:

Powerbook G5 confirmed, specs unveiled.
By Chip Hillsler

May 25, 2005 - Reliable sources have confirmed the two year wait for G5 Powerbooks is over, with machines ready for WWDC release on June 6th. The new Powerbook lineup features a 1.5GHz or 1.6GHz G5 CPU with a front side bus running at 500MHz and 800MHz respectively. 512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM is standard on 17" and 15" models and a new 256MB widescreen 13.3" (1152 x 768) will replace the now defunct 12".

1.5Ghz models will have a slower front side bus similar to the low end 1.8GHz Powermac G5 which runs at one third CPU speed. Even more controversially the G5s L2 cache has been reduced in size from 512K to 256K and from full CPU speed to half in order to lower power consumption and heat generation.

Best indications are that four configurations will be offered with the following specifications:
13.3" 1.5GHz
256K L2 cache at 750MHz
13.3" 1152x768 widescreen display
256MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2GB max.)
60GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64MB of DDR SDRAM

15" 1.5GHz
256K L2 cache at 750MHz
15" 1280 x 854 widescreen display
512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2GB max.)
80GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64MB of DDR SDRAM

15" 1.6GHz
256K L2 cache at 800MHz
15" 1280 x 854 widescreen display
512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2GB max.)
100GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of DDR SDRAM
dual-link DVI standard

17" 1.6GHz Powerbook G5
256K L2 cache at 800MHz
17" 1440 x 900 widescreen display
512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2GB max.)
100GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of DDR SDRAM
dual-link DVI standard

Lacklustre specs?

Without benchmarks and real world testing of final release hardware it's difficult to know exactly how the performance of the new Powerbooks will compare to the old, but these specifications may cause more worry among those who have waited more than two years for the G5 to reach the portable line. With the crippled bus speed of the low end models and the G5s impressive cache reduced to half speed as a concession to power and heat reduction, we expect the reaction to these new models to be less than favorable.

Killuminati, good point. The current PBs are great. And you're correct that there would be a lot of disadvantages. The biggest one is the amount of heat released!

My understanding is that if you have a G4 and G5 of equivalent speed, the G4 will beat the G5. I don't know if this takes into account the FSB, but if it does then these machines would all be slower (especially with crippled cache) than the current line-up.

I don't think that it would release these.

Now that I've seen the specs, I'd believe that Apple could release something like that, crippled or not, possible performance hit or not. I'm sure it would speed up some applications, and feel slower for other applications.

Anyway, I'm sure Apple just wants to move the PB into the world of 64-bit. Maybe it won't speed things up right now, but its better than sticking with G4s. The only downside to this is that they won't be using the dual-core G4s that max out at 2.2 GHz. That would be better for now while the G5 Powerbook design and heat problems get sorted properly. :)

ok thats total BS, first off why the hell would they reduce the ram in the 12"? wtf is up with that, second of all you cant have half speed on die L2 cache, this has a complete lack of credibility, dude who posted this where did you find it?

my predictions for the powerbook G5:

1.8GHz 17" HD screen
900MHz bus
1GB ram standard
radeon 9800 mobility 128MB 256MB option

same for high end 15"

1.6GHz 15" higher res screen
800MHz bus
512MB ram
radeon 9800 128MB

1.6GHz 12" still 1024x768
533MHz bus
512MB ram
radeon 9700 128MB

i have no credibility but thats what i expect.

My prediction is that we will see dual core G4s first, or at least faster versions of the current G4s. Odds are the 17" will see a 2.0ghz G4 within the next 6 months or so. I don't see the G5 hitting the PB lineup quite yet as they consume too much power and are too hot at this point. Maybe if apple designs a watercooled laptop (which I would definetly buy if it worked well) then it could happen. Only thing is, it'd be real hard to keep it 1" thick.

I agree, faster/dual G4's with faster FSB's.

dual core g4's are not going to happen, they require a whole new logic board design which apple will not put the R&D into for an interim powerbook bump, the powerbooks will come when the 970GX is ready.

I hope that they do use the GX in the next PowerBook, but apple do seem to be happy making changes to the mother board for speed bumps. The current PowerBook was more than just a speed bump with the upgrade to Bluetooth 2 (though I guess that could be a separate module).

adding things like bluetooth and dual link DVI is minor, i'm talking about a new chipset and logic board layout.
