I just did a clean install of Lion on my external HD and Lion takes up:

  • Finder: 23.34 GB
  • About This Mac: 23.34 GB
  • Terminal: 21.00 GB
  • OmniDiskSweeper: 13.00 GB

Now the OmniDiskSweeper amount is inline with what I've read Lion should take up (8GB of memory, so ~8GB sleep image file). So far I've run Disk Utility (Verify Disk, Repair Disk, & Repair Disk Permissions) with no change.

Well I ended up reinstalling lion and not running the update (which originally had iTunes, Safari, EFI and some other updates) and removing the sleepimage file. Currently the clean install takes up about 5GB.
