What? Where's Entourage, I use to use it, I know use Apple's Mail, but why isn't it there.

I just got myself a new dual 867 powermac with 10.2 installed and used Apple's Mail program for about 2 weeks. Then I started getting wierd problems with messages getting randomly duplicated in my mailbox and then all my messages getting unexpectedly deleted! I switched over to Eudora 5.1 which isn't as pretty (no Quartz support :( ). But at least it doesn't screw up my emails.

Yamson, are you using POP or IMAP to get your mail. If you are using POP, but are able to use IMAP, switch immediately. IMAP stores all of your mail on the server, which is more likely to be backed up then your personal computer. Your mailer app does not get confused on whether it has downloaded a message previously. You can even tell mail.app to cache messages, either all, just the headers, or ones that you have read+all headers.

As for the poll, I use mail.app, and would guess that 95% of the all others are using Entourage.

Hw could you leave off MS Entourage? Even if it is from Microsoft... It IS the best eMail client for Mac OS X...

My vote of "Other" counts toward Entourage!

Why Entourage wasn't on the list. Not that big of a deal. But I also use it. I have to say Microsoft did something right by making the Office Suite rock on OS X.

I used to use Mozilla [not on list ] for email, but I experienced countless crashes upon using mail from there.

So I use the Mail program that came with OS X.

OS 10.2's built in mail program. Works for what I need, and the junk mail filter is a blessing. :D Used to use Netscape 4.7's, but the address book was less than tolerable.

hmmm... entourage sounds like a better mail app if you want to drop the $$ for it, so since you already have it purchased, i can't imagine why you'd want to go to mail. but of course, i have never used either... and Mail is certainly worth a tryout; not like you can't switch back, right?

I'll vote for the mail.app every time ;) ... It's the only IMAP client I have found for mac that I can use on my GWIA (Groupwise Internet Agent). Outlook Express, Entourage and Eudora just don't get it right in understanding my settings for Sent Items, Deleted Items and so on.

The new mail.app does a wonderful job. I only wish Novell would come up with a decent (and recent update to their) Groupwise Client.

I don't understand. They finaly give mac users good clientless access to Novell Netware 6 servers with a good implementation of Native File Access for Mac. And just forget that these people might have a Groupwise account on the same network they might like to check. The WebAccess is nice, but insufficient for daily use.

Just had to get it off my chest.

Reader Penny Beagelle writes: Is a laptop or a desktop better? I have a small company and need to do some graphics, photos, etc., plus 100 page reports. I like the mobility of a laptop, but is a desktop better in the long run for holding/retrieving data, etc.?
Great question. Sounds like it's easy to answer on the surface, right? Laptops are mobile, desktops aren't. But there's more to it than that. Here are some issues to consider:
Mobility - Well, sure, it's the big one. If you need to work remotely, a laptop is the way to go. Remember that a 3G card from your cell phone provider can give you high-speed internet access in most urban areas.
Storage - One of the major places where laptops and desktops differ is in how much hard drive space they offer. Laptops use physically smaller drives, which can only offer so much storage space. Though larger drives are available, 100GB is still common on a laptop, while 500GB desktop drives are seen all the time (again, bigger drives can be had). This is a huge difference and it seems to be expanding, not contracting. If you have very large storage needs, desktop is your best bet.
Graphics and Gaming - You said you run a business so I don't expect this is a big deal for you, but with Vista it's important to consider graphics now, no matter what kind of user you are. Laptop graphics have come a long way, but I'd still say only 50 percent have really sufficient graphics processors. On the other hand, you can outfit any PC with perfectly good graphics for $100... and you can upgrade it later.
Upgrades - Speaking of upgrades, it's more difficult to upgrade a laptop. In some cases, it's impossible: Sure, you can pop in a new hard drive later, but adding a second hard drive means plugging in an external disk that will be cumbersome to tote around with you. Many laptop optical drives can't really be upgraded at all, nor can motherboards or CPUs. Laptop repairs are far more expensive and difficult than desktop PC repairs.
Peripherals - Remember that when you're in the office, you can always plug in an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor to your laptop.
Price - Expect to pay $300 to $500 more for a comparably equipped laptop (though this varies widely).
Other considerations are about the same, to be honest. CPU and RAM are about equal on laptops and desktops now, unless you're considering an ultra-high-end PC.
I obviously can't make the buying decision for you, but I'll reiterate my computer plan in case you haven't seen it before. I use both: a moderately-priced laptop is with me on a daily basis, syncing up with an inexpensive desktop that works as a print and file server. The desktop works as a machine for my daily backups, has plenty of storage for stuff I don't need to take with me on the road (or to other rooms of the house), has two printers hooked up to it, accepts incoming faxes, and otherwise stands as a backup in case something fails on my laptop. My laptop, however, is where I do most of my work. Sure I could get by with just a notebook PC, but having both makes things so much easier.

I use Apple Mail but I'm finding the popularity of essentially "cloud computer" is really making its way with email usage (ie gmail). So maybe we won't use email clients in the future... The only reason I used Apple Mail over gmail was for offline use, but even gmail does that now...

jive turkey

I have actually made the switch from mail.app back to Thunderbird. I am using a developmental build (which will probably be released as a beta this week) and it is very solid. It now has full message search, which is the one are where Mail kicked TB's tail. Plus I can leave it running for several days before it reaches 100mb in RAM usage, where as Mail will get to that in about 20 minutes and be up to over 400MB after a day or two.

I decided to see what TB had to offer again because Mail has an issue with my IMAP server and SSL, where it refuses to check mail except once every 15 minutes, and the IDLE command doesn't work. I think it has something to do with cached connections, but it was rather annoying when needing to exchange quick emails or click on a confirmation link. TB handles that correctly, and comes with free mail tags, too!

Except for that one problem, I really like mail.app, and unless you use Dreamhost you probably won't have the SSL problem (I have never found another person with the same issue who wasn't using Dreamhost). But the nightly versions of TB (aka Shredder) are very good, and I have moved back to using them. At least until Snow Leopard comes out.

I finally made the move from Hotmail to Gmail, so now Mail.app does everything I need without third-party plugins. My Gmail account has existed for years, but was used as a catch-all for spam - took me forever to clean that thing up to make it usable on a full-time basis. :D

I kind of went back and forth between Apple Mail and straight-up web-based Gmail about a year ago, but gradually moved full-time to Gmail on the web. I'm running an older PowerBook and I found my fans kicking in a lot with Mail running. I have Google Notifier running all the time, so I still get a signal when new mail arrives. It's perfect for me.

I use mail app for my two gmail accounts and for RSS.. although it does take up a lot of system memory.. what's google notifier? I'll have to look into that.

*edit* just checked it out, looks cool but I have no fan issues w/ mail and I put in 4gb of ram for a reason so I'll prob just stick to mail app though I always like to look into alternatives.
