I just tried that and it feels...quite nice actually. My headphones don't work well with it but I never thought about doing that.

Always have. Shure recommends that method. I just ordered a pair of JH Audio custom molded IEMs and that's how theirs are made. With regular earphones they stay in my ears better.

Some higher end IEMs actually are designed only for that style. It has numerous advantages like better reduction in micro phonics, staying in place better, and, to some, comfort.

Is there any other way?

That's the only way I could ever get them to stay in :p Then I bought some big chunky headphones because even then they'd occasionally fall out if I moved around too much

does the wire not rub behind the ear causing a rubbing sound (ie if you gently rub the back of your ear)

one of the things I hate is that wire rubbing sound while listening with headphones.

I guess this will depend on the earphone in question, but certainly doesn't do this with my custom monitors.
