How do I export my iDVD file to MPG or AVI?

If you want to convert an iDVD project into a Avi or Mpeg format, follow these directions.

This has been tested in Tiger on my Powerbook, and I've found the following method to work well for me.


What you need:

- iDVD 5 (iDVD 4 doesn't have a export as a disk image option)
- Handbrake (freeware)


Instructions

1. Open your project in iDVD 5 and export it as a disk image.

2. Once you have the ".img" file, double click it to mount it as a drive.

3. Open handbrake. If you do not have the program, find it at either Version Tracker or Mac Update, it's freeware.

4. In handbrake, select "DVD Folder" and select the Video_TS folder on the mounted disk image you've created.

5. With handbrake you have several ripping options, choose the option that best suits your need. Press go and let it rip.

6. Your done. Enjoy your Avi or Mpeg movie. 🙂


I should mention that handbrake gets rid of the DVD menu and only copies the main movie feature. This should be no problem, as AVI and Mpeg videos have no use for those menus anyway.

idvd movie to MPG/AVI

I prefer making movies in imovie for this very reason. You won't have the fancy titles as in idvd, but if it's for AVI etc., it's a good option.

If you need to fancy DVD options, then this wouldn't work, but if it's necessary to get AVI or MPEG-4 options, it is possible in imovie.
Also, in imovie, it's so simple to pull in video from camera or other files, edit and add great sound options (fade, multiple songs, etc.) It's almost to simplistic, but the output options are more flexible.

I also prefer to make slide shows in imovie for those same reasons. I will eventually get photos to movies, but just breaking in the new MAC.
imovie does seem to be the best for exporting options from what I've found so far.

In imovie go to SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and then have lots of OPTIONS for Movie to: AVI, DV STream, Flash, Image Seq., iphone, ipod, MPG-4, Quicktime movie, AIFF and a few more.

My version of iDVD is 7.1.1 (came with iLife '08), and has a "Save as Disk Image..." choice on the File menu. I think that might be what you need.
