Good use for a superdrive?

Back ups to DVD?
Create your own home movies with iMovie?

Perhaps its not my place to say this, particularly because I'm not familiar with forum policy, but I don't think its appropriate to use this as a venue for discussing the methods involved in breaking intellectual copyright law. The Superdrive is ideal for backing up data and creating DVD movies through iDVD and countless other authoring applications.

If you want a copy of a commercial film for yourself, there are many locations where you can buy them! IE ~ Amazon.com

Fair enough, but in some countries it's perfectly legal to make a back up copy of already-purchased media.

I think it's perfectly legitimate to rebel every now and again at the sheer unbelievable wrath of control Hollywood puts on it's movies.

You're allowed to copy an Audio CD for your own pleasure aren't you? Well...yes. So why not DVD's? I'm certainly not condoning copying rentals, but it would be useful to be able to make a copy for various other purposes.

Remember: Rules are to be observed by wise men, and obeyed by fools.

Ah yes...

Well, I'd suggest you make it less obvious next time and ask about 'backing up dvds that you own' next time, eh champ?

Time to have some fun:

Besides, you shouldn't copy intellectual property. Copying DVDs means you hate freedom. And if you hate freedom, you're one of the terrorists. And if you're a (media)terrorist? Well, buddy, you sure don't fit in with the right-wing, 'morality'-based, idiotic conservatism that's ever so popular around here!

And think about who you'd be hurting. It's people like you that take away $15-$20 from the corporations and their stock holders *cough* I mean, the innocent, hard-working actors and crew that don't make anything on the DVD sales...*cough* I mean, that make a living from the DVD sales...

You're ruining lives with your greed! Because, downloading or copying something for yourself, that you didn't intend to buy anyway isn't the same as just not buying it! It's stealing! And it's not something Jesus would've done!

I mean, when you walk into a bank, and just take gold bars - don't you think that's stealing!? It's the same thing! Data? Gold bars? It's the same thing! My comparison is flawless!

And, I mean, it's like - you're taking 'pennies' from the jar, right!? So what if everybody did that!? OMG! Because it will come to that! Eventually, everybody will be breaking the law - JUST LIKE YOU!

And don't tell me they don't 'make up for it' by overcharging per unit. Don't wave the 'but DVDs only cost about $1.25 to print and package' nonsense in my face!

They're taking a loss on DVD sales! That's why all of the movie companies are going bankrupt! It's because of you!

Right now, a CEO is passing up his 'lines of coke and a nightly handjob in the alley behind Carls' Jr.', because you thought it would be cool to copy a DVD. Bravo.

I feel the world has lost all of it's morals! Even extremely devout Christians like myself will probably copy DVDs one day! Goodness, I pray that day never comes.

Copying intellectual property is the devil's work! So is smoking the pot or speeding on deserted roads! For shame! Laws are there because they're always right. Not because the people in control make money off of them!

So what's your excuse then? 'Oh, but I don't have the money to pay for a $20+ DVD, but if I did, and if I enjoyed the product, I'd be willing to buy it when I have the money.' Well, that's too bad now isn't it!? What? You think that if you don't have enough money to buy that nice sports car, that you can just go to the dealer and say, 'Look fella, I don't have enough money right now, but I really want this car. Could I pay you in increments until it's all paid for'!? No! You'll just have to save up until you have enough for it! And besides, they'll release a better version around then, just to show you how much they appreciate your business!

Think about it buddy. Think about the lives you're wrecking!

The movie industry shows you how much they love you, by not just releasing your favorite films on DVD - but by releasing them in a pyramid scheme fashion *cough* I mean, 'fan-requested fashion' by making at least three different editions! And this is how you thank them!?

Goodness gracious! I'd hate to see how you thank them when they offer you those same movies on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs! And to think, they'd go out of there way to help a pirate of all people!

This has gotten me so fired up. I can't believe how immoral it is! I'm outraged! You kids and your internet, and your downloads!

Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go legally drink and smoke my legal, taxed, american-made, government regulated (for my safety) drugs while watching my legally purchased fifth edition of 'Dr. Strangelove' - which I've so far spent at least a buck-oh-five on, and which I will be purchasing again when it is re-re-re-re-re-re-re-released on Blu-Ray two years from now.

Remember, be a good 'Merican. Pay for your memories. Support our troops. Buyshit thirteen times. Cigarettes are ok, but pot helps fund Al Qaeda. Be a good little earth-monkey. Obey. That is all.

[/facts]

*with the acception of a few 'key' hollywood bigshots - that negotiate their contracts so that they walk away with a large portion of the gross - which often times - still has nothing to do with the DVD sales, but rather, the theatrical runs...

False.

First off, let me say that I don't advocate/condone piracy. I now work in "the business," and it would be very hypocritical for me to pirate movies, then complain about how I don't make any money somewhere down the line.

Now, let's say you have a legitimate reason to copy DVD's you own... say your kids love playing movies, but don't take the best care of the fragile disks. Backing up "well loved" DVD's is a fairly easy process. You'll need
"Mac the Ripper" and a "DVD2OneX".

Mac the Ripper will download a DVD (or just selected parts of a DVD) to a source on your computer. DVD2OneX will compress it down to fit on a consumer DVD-R. You can tell DVD2One to spit out a .dmg, and then simply burn it to a disc using the OSX disc utility.

Don't forget, the "V" in DVD stands for "versatile." Burning DVDs of important projects, photos and other files has saved me many a time. The superdrive is an amazingly versatile tool, and the fact that it doesn't copy hollywood DVD's out of the box doesn't make it worthless by any means.
