Hi All,

When I upgraded to Panther (on my Original Dual 2GHz G5 Powermac--which shipped to me like a month before Panther's release), I installed panther from my roommate's installation discs, those that came with his G4 iMac. This worked fine, and I proceeded to upgrade my Pismo Powerbook to Panther with the same discs.

However, he misplaced his discs, and when I went to reformat my drive and do a clean install from another friend's G5 imac discs (panther), it would not allow me to do the install. Now, yet another mac friend, this time with a hot, brand new 1.67ghz 15" powerbook running Tiger, lent me his discs, and once again, my comp. would not allow me to do the install.

Ordinarily I would just go and pay the cash to Apple for a hard copy of Tiger (which I will eventually do), but I am completely broke, and my computer's lagging a bit--making it harder to scour the web for jobs ;)

When did apple start limiting these installation discs to only operate on their designated model's hardware. Is there any kind of workaround so that i can save a few bucks for now. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Ethan

I'm sorry you are having financial difficulties, but there is nothing about this that is legal or ethical, and I don't feel particularly compelled to help you circumvent any protection / limitation scheme in the install discs.

So what's wrong with all of your macs at the same time? Maybe you should concentrate on fixing what's wrong. Although I guess you also don't own the current operating system on your macs....
