Tethering iPhone 4's 3g as wifi to my ATV2? Quality?

Hi,

I have an ATV2 and am thinking of getting an iPhone 4 and was wondering if anybody has tried tethering the iphones 3g as wifi to the ATV2?

If so what is the quality like when watching a movie? Is it constantly buffering?

The quality is really going to depend on where you are located, what kind of signal you get, what the backbone is like, which carrier your iPhone is one, etc... The other thing to think about is the data demands of a setup like this. You could easily burn through your entire month's allotment of data in a couple of HD shows or a long movie.

The performance maybe there if you're in the right neighborhood, but the other requirements make this impractical aside from very limited uses.

Im in the UK and on the Three network. Im on the one plan which is truly unlimited data and im allowed to tether aswell unlimited. I did a speed test on my brothers iphone 4s last night and it was pulling down 3mbps and 1mpps upload. That should be enough shouldnt it?

Yup, the performance will be fine.

But, I suspect this use of an Apple TV will not fall under the 'fair and reasonable use' definition that I imagine is in your mobile contract. At 1.2 gigabytes of data per hour of HD video, I would burn through my entire month's allotment of data (4 gigs) on At&t in 3.33 hours. 3's largest plan is for 15g of data a month, which is a little more than 12 hours of HD video.

I'd again advise you to contact your mobile company (in writing) and verify that streaming HD video is part of their fair use policy and that you'll be covered. You might also pull out your contract and read the section on unlimited data and fair use, I'd almost guarantee you that it's in there.

They actually use "there is no restriction or fair use policy" as a selling point in the UK... Time to get jealous 😉

Well, reading their terms and conditions does clear up one thing: the plan that Macs4u (The One Plan) is on does NOT support tethering, and you're not allowed to add the tethering option to that plan, but nowhere does it say anything else but that the data is in fact unlimited and that no form of fair use or limitation is in play.

For free data and tethering he would need a different plan with all you can eat data and tethering options activated. But even then there is nothing that states that there would be any sort of limitations on the data plan.

Your wrong. It clearly says on the three website "If you're on The One Plan you can use the internet when you're out and about with other devices including laptops, tablets and games consoles, just by connecting them through Wi-Fi or USB to your phone. You can tether on all our One Plan tariffs including SIM Only with a one-month rolling contract" See here for confirmation (http://support.three.co.uk/srvs/cgi...e=obj(3599),varset_username=Mobile:mobileUser)

Ive also just called three to confirm and have been told "yes sir , you can tether your iphone andhave UNLIMITED internet with no caps"

I re-read the conditions for all you can eat, and I must have read with my ass yesterday... That's what you get for trying to cram in some forum time when you're stressed 😉

Good luck with that. Make sure you post back in a couple of months once you've got your bill. I'd love to hear how this works out.
