Hey guys, check this out

http://www.overclockers.com/tips00791/

It's interesting. It goes into why Apple may not have chosen AMD. It includes a lot of really good technical information as well as interesting tidbits like how the current AMD CEO was in charge of the CPU division of Motorola when they got the Apple account hehehe.

Thanks Spaceball. Nice article - Actually explained quite a bit. The "why not AMD" / "why Intel" puzzled among us should get a lot out of it. :)

Not to mention that AMD was also Motorola's Fab partner during the second round of major G4 problems.

The relationships got so bad that AMD walked out about a six months to a year sooner than agreed to after they decided to part ways after the next production node was reached, and left Motorola scrambling to find a new Fab partner in order to help them reach that node.

Of course that problem led them to do the 7457 by babystepping the 7455 through 3 major revisions taking the 7455 incrementally to the same chip as the 57 at the unshrunk size. Instead of the production node leaps that they worked with before.

Which ended up being one of Motorola's most successful die-shrink transitions that the G4 ever had.
