I was just perusing the competition, and came across something that startled me.
See attachments.
The first is from Dell UK and the second good old Apple UK store (not educational or anything). Was very surprised! - I love the way DELL quote the value in MB to make it "seem" bigger!

The same thing goes for the HD and others:
HD: DELL standard is 40GB. To upgrade to 100GB - £246.75
Apple standard is 80GB. To upgrade to 100GB - £69.99

All this time I thought Dell was cheap! Sure the base model is £878, but to get it up to anywhere near good is gonna cost some large money!

It's the same here in Australia. If you spec up a PowerMac it'll generally come out cheaper than a similarly specced Dell. It's weird.

The dell is ddr2 the apple is normal ddr so that would probably account for the price difference.

But that's only the RAM. When I bought my iMac a few weeks ago, I specced up a Dell as closely as possible and it came out about AU$50 more expensive which I thought was a bit weird. Admittedly, I get the student discount. :)
