AVI - subs..

I got some movies I need to watch in the AVI format. That are all Japanese files and VLC plays the movie flawlessly yet wont play subtitles...

Mplayer crashes when I try and play the movie, maybe it doesnt play avi?

I need a free solution to this quick!

why would the japanese version have english subs?

aren't subs only embedded in the DVD versions?
