PIA07997.jpg

On May 19th, 2005, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit captured this stunning view as the Sun sank below the rim of Gusev crater on Mars. This Panoramic Camera (Pancam) mosaic was taken around 6:07 in the evening of the rover's 489th martian day, or sol. Spirit was commanded to stay awake briefly after sending that sol's data to the Mars Odyssey orbiter just before sunset.

nice

Personally I would love to see sunset from one of saturns or jupiters moons.

That is incredible. The sun is so small there.

I am truly at a loss for words to describe that picture.

Hollywood doesn't compare.

That would be quite cool - seeing Saturn and the Sun in the same pic - it would look like one of those bad Bryce 3D scenes but actually be real :D

Cool Mars pic, though - I love the fact that at dawn and sunset its a blue tinge, but during the day its red.

Thank you!

It's been added to my Space Desktops folder, which I use to refresh my desktop every few minutes.

Martian Twilight

Here is the martian twilight sky at Gusev crater, as imaged by the panoramic camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit around 6:20 in the evening of the rover's 464th martian day, or sol (April 23, 2005).

Hauntingly beautiful. It's very subtle, isn't it? Not so bright as earth sunsets, but in a way, its more beautiful because its something I've never seen before. More special. Totally my new desktop.

Thanks!

i think part of the reason the sun seems so small is that its a wide angle shot. It should appear a bit smaller, but not that much.
Really awesome picture.
