Launched in beta last week (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/26/valve-releases-steam-companion-app-for-iphone/), Valve has opened up its Steam iPhone companion app to all users (http://kotaku.com/5880945/).

The app allows Steam users to view their Steam friends list, see what games their friends are playing, and chat with players in-game.

Gamers can also browse and purchase from the Steam library of titles from the iPhone, to play later on a PC or Mac. However, there is no purchasing of iOS games through the app, something that, aside from the fact that Steam doesn't support any iOS games, Apple would surely frown upon.

Question

Does the app use money from your steam account or from your iTunes account to make purchases?

If the former, doesn't that violate Apple's terms of using the App store?

If not... Valve already takes 30% of what users pay. Between Apple taking 30% and Valve taking 30%, it seems like developers and publishers would be annoyed, to say the least, with Valve.

It uses your Steam account. It doesn't run afoul of Apple's rules because the content isn't for consumption on the iOS device...it's all Mac and PC games. It's like using Amazon's Price Check app to buy physical goods from Amazon.

Apple only cares if it's content (print, video, music subscriptions and other content) that is meant for the iOS device. That has to go through Apple's in-app purchase.

Online distributors (Amazon, Axel etc) don't have to pay Apple when you buy stuff through their apps. Neither do Valve.

Steam is such a bad service (speed and usability) that I had to dump the games I purchased threw it on my mac!

I would not recommend adding it to your phone!

just my $0.02

All I want are push notifications when new deals go up. I don't care what the deal is, I want to know about it.

What do you find wrong with it? Speed can be a bit slow on occasion but usability wise I don't see a problem, click game, click play

I second that. As long time user of steam I have to say it is awesome, so glad I dont have to manage the CD's or the Serial numbers. Then the move to make some of my old pc versions as mac games without extra charge is a pleasent surprise.

I love it for linking up with my Steam friends before I get off of work to game.
