I was on vacation this week and naturally I brought along my best friend, my ipod. Well.....my fat a*s crushed him on a rock and now the screen is cracked. I was devastated, my friends have video of my reaction (not pretty).

Anyways, I don't like having the "one eyed monster" staring at me on my desk. My ipod is now like a glorified iPod shuffle.

Have any of you ever replaced a screen?

Sorry to hear about your loss. Your reaction was probably the same as mine would have been if I had broken my iPod Mini (  :( ).

This (http://www.ipodresq.com/detail.php?prodID=P010414) place can fix it for $145. Not cheap, but less than a new 4G iPod.

That might be a good alternative, i have seen this site advertised all over. While you're at it, maybe they can install one of those super high performance iPod batteries, they do that too. They aren't too expensive, maybe $30 more? (don't quote me on that)

It's not under warranty because I bought it in October 2003. I just opened it up and took out the screen, so right now I'm using it as an external drive. I was looking at the prices on a new screen and it looks like it might set me back $70.
I know it's very likely the 5Gs are coming out mid-July. Should I just wait? My problem is I have 2 more vacations before the end of July and I'm sure most of you know it's like having a missing hand w/o one.

www.ipodmechanic.com should have whatever parts you need to fix it. What size is your iPod tho? Id say that if it is one of the small 3G then just wait and get yourself a nice upgrade to a 5G :D

This isn't worth the repair. Considering the parts, shipping and time you'll put into repairing an old iPod (whose battery life, I'm sure, isn't as good as you'd like it to be), it's probably worth it to spend a little extra a get a newer, bigger and better batter-ied 4G.

If you can wait for the 5G's, then you could probably get a brand new 20GB 4G for $50 less than they are selling for now.

This is kinda what I was thinking. I filled out my claim form for the defective battery yesterday to mail out.

I'll keep my eye on ebay to see if i can possibly get a screen for no more than $30.

You could always go with a refurb iPod mini. They're about $150 right now at the Apple Store, but it's the older version with the lower battery life. Or see if you can get a new screen cheap. I wouldn't buy a new iPod now, but that's just me.

I agree with iGary with getting a shuffle. You can then at least use it as a flash drive if new ones come out soon.

Refurb 20GB 4G models are still available for $250 at apple.com. Just got mine yesterday. Apart from the plain cardboard box it comes in, it looks just like new.

Actually, it looks like you can get your screen replaced for $129. Considering that this price includes express shipping there and back it's not a bad deal.

The $145 quoted previously was for the 4th generation iPod. Yours is a 3rd gen.

Man, that sucks. Did you pay for it with a credit card? If so, you might have an extended warranty you're not aware of. My plain-jane MasterCard (not Gold or Platinum or anything...) comes with automatic purchase protection that doubles the warranty of anything I buy with it. And it doesn't matter how the item is damaged (or stolen, etc.) So in this case you'd be laughing and they'd be shipping you a brand-new 4G iPod!

I put all my toys on my MasterCard without exception for this reason.

Hi there,

I feel your pain, as the screen on my 3G iPod broke when I was kicked in the chest (iPod was in my jacket pocket), 2 months ago. I eventually got round to caalling Apple, who told me it would be £170 to replace the screen, I thought this wwas an utter rip off so gave it a miss and bought a new iPod instead for just an extra £35. OK my warranty had well passed, but its just sso obvious thaat Apple does not care about after market problems very much and will charge a premium for it.

Do you have homeowner's/renter's insurance? They cover most accidental losses even away from home. :)

Yes, I have insurance, but not for ipod kinda stuff. I'll will probably end up sucking up my sorrows and ride it out with my shuffle.

You could buy a new iPod from say Best Buy, and then return it after you vacation. Nothing they can do about it. Not the most respectfull thing to do, but hey, its Best Buy.

I heard a few months ago that it was a new inclosure and maybe a color screen across the line.

well i havent read through all of the posts so i dont know if this has been suggested.. but, my iPod was once runover (long story) and the screen was cracked and the whole ipod itslef bent slightly in half... at the time i had bought it from Best Buy i went to the store and the girl helping me told me not to worry about them not fixing it because it was an accident. They have to give you the benefit of the doubt so if they see that its dented they can't ask you if the damage was accidental because then you can say what! that was not how my iPod was etc etc etc... so long story short i got a new iPod back and everything had gone smoothly. i would just send it in, im sure Apple would handle it the same way.
