Also Command("cloverleaf")-Shift-4 will allow you to capture only a rectangle of the screen that you select.

And the good news keeps coming, Command+Shift+4+Space Bar will let you select specific screen elements like a window or a menu. A big fat camera will pop up.

And to add to all of the above, since you asked about the print screen, to take a screenshot to clipboard instead of file:
cmd-ctrl-shift-3: Copy screen (just like prt scr)
cmd-ctrl-shift-4 then select by dragging out box: Copy selection
cmd-ctrl-shift-4 then hit spacebar and click on window: Copy window (just like alt-prt scr)

I set my own screenshot in the preferences > keyboard shortcuts
for familiarity perhaps a *command F12* or something

If you want something that can take the whole screen, a window, or a selection, how about trying SnapNDrag (http://www.yellowmug.com/snapndrag/) from Yellow Mug Software.
