View Full Version : Are the rank titles gonna change now that Apple has moved to Intel?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the rankings (like 6502, 601, etc.) part of this PowerPC name thing, and the numbers are names for the processors?

If so, shouldn't there be NEW member names, like P4M or CM or Centrino, etc. but in number form?

Just wondering...

601 is the first ranking that is a PowerPC (and, AFAIK, the first PPC in a Mac)...the rankings are the historical sequence of chips that Apples used, but it actually stops well short of anything used by Apple today, let alone when Intel comes in, FWIW. At least, assuming there aren't hidden titles beyond 601. ;)

I thought it was established in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=124128) that there were further rankings but no-one had hit them yet (or at least hadn't hit them without being a Mod/Demi-God/Contributor)

Since we're nowhere the 970s yet, I suspect it will be a long time before the need for a Yonah rank becomes critical...

It's been answered already... but the 6502 was the processor used in the Apple I. so, the names are historical.

That is very interesting, I always wondered about the actual meaning of the rank numbers. Historical means a lot of sense. ;)

A little OT but had to ask... which Mac used the 68010 processor? I can't recall..

the 128k,512k,Plus and SE used the 68000, the Mac II that came out at the same time as the SE had a 68020 ... the Apple III had some modified 6502 on it IIRC

Either my memory is starting to play tricks on me or there was no Apple computer with a 68010 chip on it?

I know I could look this up, but I'd rather be enlightened by fellow Macrumor users

Notice how you only get that ranking for 5 posts? ;)

IIRC the 68010 was a development chip that would have made it into a revised Plus except the 68020 came along and they scrapped the whole thing. it's been about a decade since i read that book so i might be wrong..

No, I had a 68010 machine, but it wasn't a Mac. BTW, can I stop being a "demi-god"? I thought that was supposed to expire after a year anyway. I'd like to have a processor ranking 8-)

Just a minor, little, tiny, insignificant, trivial, trifling, petty, insubstantial niggling problem. ;)

Ok, now you just made me wonder. How could you tell if someone is using two user names? :confused:Mark Felt lets us know. :D

Some members who double-register simply aren't aware of the rule. For example, they lost their password so they sign up again. They often explain this in a post, PM us about it, or another member points it out. Then we help them and close one membership to straighten it out.

If a member reregisters thinking to get around being banned, they are usually spotted quickly because they go back to whatever bad habits got them banned in the first place, so they get reported.

I see. So there's no way of knowing if it's the same person (without Mark Felt's help ;) ), if they change their habits and don't tell you who they are?

I see. So there's no way of knowing if it's the same person (without Mark Felt's help ;) ), if they change their habits and don't tell you who they are?If they have become a completely different person, including a new personality and newly discovered manners and social skills, perhaps they aren't the same person anyway! I can say, however, that double-registration has not been a major problem here. Most people are aware of the rule and very few ever violate it.

I.E., Mac users (or Windows users who want Macs, like me) are smart enough to comprehend the fact that you register ONCE where as a Windows forum would be like, "Hey dotdotdot32, I thought you were dotdotdot13?" "I am... I lost my password." "Oh"

Bolding is mine. :D
