mail will not open

My roomate was trying to set up her email accounts on her imac, she has had her computer for ages but never used mail.
When she opens the program, it says that the version of mail is not compatible with her current operating system. She has not upgraded her system and is running snow lepoard, and it is fully updated.
Any ideas on how to fix?
