Why does FaceTime video pause when on another desktop?

Is this intentional? Whenever me and my girlfriend are in a FaceTime call, mac to mac, whenever either of us switches to another desktop, the video pauses. This is very annoying as we like to keep the video running.

Is there any way to change this to stop it from freezing?
