Quick questions.

1) Does iPhoto copy my pictures to the Pictures folder when it imports?

2) if true what file does it store them in?

3) After importing into iPhoto is it safe to delete the external source images?

Yes, it does copy it into ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
After that is a complicated set of directories that you never want to navigate.

So yes, you can delete the originals. If you ever need the file outside of iPhoto, you can get at it by finding the picture in iPhoto, then hitting File --> Export.
 
After you import into a iPhoto, it does make a copy of the file so you can delete the original.

The pictures are stored in Pictures/iPhoto Library, Then it is Year/Month/Day. It's kind of confusing.

Or just drag and drop. 🙂
 
Do any photo editing, copying, or deletion by using the iPhoto app. Don't go into the iPhoto folder to delete or move files. Leave the folder alone, your mac will keep it tidy.

iPhoto is a great app by the way.
