this bit is soooo funny lol
"When you first install Windows Desktop Search, it must index all the relevant files on your hard disk. In my tests, this was a painfully slow process. It took more than a day to complete on each of my test machines -- even though I deliberately did little work on the two PCs during this period because the indexing pauses when you're using the computer."
reminds me of defrag on my old win 98 at work lol
keep trying microsoft ! you might get it right soon ?

if they cant index properly now
and winFS isnt gonna be in longhorn
theres no way in hell this will work properly in the future.
half the task of indexing is being able to look throught the file system quickly and easily. the other half is actually noting where things are.
that being said, if longhorn continues to use fat32 or ntfs, it wont make a difference
(all speculation of course)

Well, you really only need to perform an "indexing" at the very start. After that, you must maintain the index as data is added/deleted/changed, not simply decide that you'll search the HD again at some arbitrary hour of the night. The key to making a search fast, isn't simply bringing down the time it takes to perform an index (which really, should only be done once) but HOW to build the index so that you can perform a search on it as quickly as possible.

I love the name they have given to the search tool "MSN Search Toolbar With Windows Desktop Search".

Compare that to "Spotlight". Is Microsoft the worst company at naming things in the world or what? If they sold toilet paper, it would be called "MSN Anus Wiping Towels with Microsoft Roll Technology". And it would have both Professional and Home editions. (And it would hurt and give you slivers.)

First Off: WHO CARES?
Really, I am not sure who is more obsessed MR members or MS at poking fun at someone else's shortfalls.
MS knows they have problems and trying to find a solution to its competition, Yes they solutions are not well thought out and might require a lot of work. However the main point is here is that they are trying. No I do not love MS or Apple, however I do care to get my work done Right the First time around or with minimal delays.
You people sound like bullies who poke fun at other at a playground.
If you have nothing productive to say, ZIP IT. ;)

just another thing that people will confuse with OSX...
"Well my Windows had indexing and it sucked! So logically the Mac indexing will suck too."

i think Apple should point out things, that Apple HAS and Microsoft has not yet, in ads or other marketing schemes.

Schadenfreude. It's nice to see the shoe on the other foot. And we're all a little tired of Microsoft taking the ideas of others just to claim them as their own.
At least Steve admitted they were ripping off Fast User Shipping from M$, and that was even a UNIX thing first. Not saying Apple never re-invents the wheel, but at least they make their products better. This is just another in a long line of me toos from them. And it's just sad.
But also a little funny.

After *years* late to the game, MSFT is going to put pseudo-tabbed browsing in IE. Great. The problem is that basic users won't have any idea there are better products out there. They'll see new tabs, then hear of Firefox, etc and say "Oh, tabbed browsing, just like IE." They won't see the benefits of moving to non-MSFT products.
This is a problem that plagues the computing industry, and it does nothing but hurt companies other than MSFT.
