If what you have is the discs that came in the box with the G5, no. You have to buy the retail version.

that is illegal to do, and if they are the iMac discs then no you can't, and don't bump within 15 minutes, that is ridiculous

You know, 15 minutes isn't that long a wait for an answer. You get what you pay for on here.
As noted, 1) what you want to do is a violation of the End User License Agreement, 2) it won't work anyway, you have to get a retail version of Tiger.
Also note, apparently if your brother has a tray-loading iMac, then he's SOL and cannot install Tiger.

Well, first off, don't ask things you know the answers to.
Secondly, don't bump your own topics in like 10 minutes - that gets annoying.
Third, learn the basic terms and there format, such as iMac (not Imac), and iBook (not IBook - or whatever - there's tons of those little things). Using the correct forms will make you look more educated and thus get you more replies for your thread.

I think that would be rather drastic considering we 4 who have responded are a frighteningly infinitesimal percentage of the millions of world-wide Mac users. I'm sorry if you feel attacked.
Bottom line, you can't do what you want. Not legal (yes, I know you get that by now), and it won't work anyway, the DVD for your G5 won't install on the iMac, that's assuming the iMac even has a DVD-ROM..
Are there other ways? Sure. Are you likely to hear about them here? Hopefully not. I'm fairly certain that Macrumors.com doesn't want to knowingly support illegal use of software. It makes them look bad.

Jesus people, give the kid a break here..... Not everyone is rich around here!
Yes, it is illegal, but you've never done anything illegal before? I know a lot of people who buy one copy of Mac OS X and install on the computers they have. Its not like this is a new thing here so quit bitching and answer the kid's question. He didn't ask if it was illegal.
Yes, Tiger will work just fine on that iMac if it has at least 256MB of RAM, and a DVD Drive.
BUT......
The iMac G5's Restore DVD WILL NOT work on your brothers iMac G3. That DVD is only made to work on an iMac G5 and will not work on any other Mac. You will need to get the full retail version. You can try it, but I highly doubt that it will work.
BEFORE YOU TRY IT!!!!! Make damn sure that your brother's iMac G3 has the latest firmware update for that iMac (version 4.1.9) or you'll have a world of problems on your hands! To see how to do the firmware update, look below. I've give you directions on how to do it. To check and see what firmware version you have, click on About this Mac and see what the Boot ROM version is, or just try running the update. It will either update, or tell you that the update is already installed. It won't hurt your iMac to run the update if its already installed. Apple is smarter than that!
What will happen is if you try to install Mac OS X before doing the firmware update, the OS X installer will tell you that you need to install the latest firmware update before proceeding any further. Sounds ok right? Well after you click the restart button from the OS X installer the display on your iMac will not come on. I guess you could say this is a little bug, and its a huge pain in the you know what to get working again. Apple will tell you that the display is bad and will no longer work, but thats not entirely true. If this happens, DO NOT reset the PRAM!!!! That will only dig you a larger hole.
If this happens, this is how I fixed that. First you will notice that near the back, toward the bottom should be a VGA connector. This is your savior! This will allow you to connect an external display to your iMac for the time being until you can do the steps below.
So you will need to get ahold of an external display. This display should work just fine when your turn the computer on, but your display inside the iMac shouldn't. It might click like its trying to turn on, but it probably won't. If it doesn't, then proceed further...
The trick is to get the firmware update on that iMac. This will restore the settings in the firmware and will make your internal display work again. So boot into Mac OS 9 (or whatever OS is on that iMac). Here is a link to the download for the firmware update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
You will need at least Mac OS 9.1 or later to run the firmware update. Mac OS 9.0 won't work with the firmware update. If you don't have Mac OS 9.1 or later, I have a Geniune (for all the perfect people out there) copy of Mac OS 9.1 Upgrade that you can have. Private message me if you're interested. I can mail it to you.
How to do the Firmware Update:
Follow the directions EXACTLY to get the firmware update to go through. This isn't a hard thing to do. Basically once the update downloads and you have the minimum required OS on it, double click the installer and let it expand. Then double click the installer icon. It will start the firmware update, and then ask you to restart your computer. So just after you click the restart button, immediately press the programmers button on the side of the iMac. Its located just below the modem, and in the lower right of the bottom USB port. You can use a pen or something to press and hold the button. You need to hold this button BEFORE you hear the Mac Chime (aka BONG!!!). Press and hold it until your hear a solid tone. Once you hear that you can release it and after a second or two you should see a message that the firmware has successfully updated. If you don't hear the tone then release the programmers button and then press it again and then restart the computer. Its kind of a tricky thing to do, but you need to hold that button before you hear the mac chime or else the firmware update won't go through. When you're finished doing the update, click the restart button and let it boot all the way into OS 9. Then shut down the computer, unhook the external display, then press the power button to turn it back on and your internal display should start working again. If you're just doing the regular firmware update before you tried to install OS X then you can disregard the external display part. You only need an external display if you've tried to install OS X before doing the update.
BTW...if you get a message while doing the firmware update that says this computer already has the firmware 4.1.9 update then you don't need to do the update. Just click ok, or restart or whatever it says and you're all to install OS X as far as that goes and you can disregard what I've said above about fixing the internal display.
So remember 2 things:
1. Get a retail copy of Mac OS X.3, or OS X.4. (I would recommend using either OS X.3 or X.4 as anything below is a little sluggish and incomplete in my opinion).
2. Make darn sure that the firmware update has been applied BEFORE you even try to install OS X on that iMac G3.
I hope this helps!
BTW...there are a ton of people in the Mac community that "steal" software. Its just as big of a problem on the Mac side than it is the PC side. Mac software is so so expensive compared to the Windows version that it makes more and more people to steal Mac software. So get over it!

When we got brand new PowerMac G5's at my school, my teacher tried using the PMG5 system restore software CD's to install Tiger on his Powerbook. He had already ordered Tiger, but wanted to install it sooner. Well, turned out he wasn't able to. They have special coding on them. His Tiger DVD did come though, the next day lol.
Good luck with Tiger. It's a better way to go.
Sorry about these other people in the forum.

Oh please, give me a break here....
All he did was ask a simple question. He didn't ask for a lecture on what's legal and not legal. It doesn't matter whether or not you spell it IMAC, Imac, or iMac. It all means the same and you know damn well what he meant.
If he actually knew the answer to his question, then why the hell do you think he asked it?
Thats a very nice welcome to the Mac world. Thanks for making him feel like home in the Mac Community. This is why I don't like forums sometimes, because all people do it bitch about things and not actually answer someone's question.
Sorry dude about all the [expletive deleted] that replied. I tried to be as much help as I could. Feel more than free to ask any other questions.

No problem! Glad I could help. There are lots of Mac forums out there believe it or not. Both Think Secret and AppleInsider have Mac Forums. There's are other private Mac Forums as well.

Just becuz ur not "rich" does not put you above the law, i want PowerBook and since im not "rich", does apple give me one? NO. What this person should do is save up, just like so many others do(and me) to buy Tiger later.

and to be able to afford an OS doesn't make you rich anyways, 140 dollars isn't *that* much. And as said before if you don't have the money does that give you the legal right to steal it? I am not rich enough to get a plasma television, so do i go into best buy and take one off the shelf. No i don't because that would be illegal.

I didn't say it did put him above the law. That wasn't the point! Stealing Mac software isn't a new topic around here. People ask all the time how to get this and that. $140 may not seem like a lot of money to you, but for someone who is 12yrs old with little or no money, its quite a bit of money. It may not be the right thing to do, but it doesn't mean you have to make him look like an ass either. All he did was ask a simple question and every starts complaining about how illegal it is, how to spell iMac, and everything else.
I think people in here need to show a little maturity!
If you don't have a solution to his question(s), then don't post.

It is illegal and wrong and $$ or no $$ does not change that no matter what lame excuse you come up with.....oh yeah!

Sorry, but is further debating this worth it? The kid got what he came here for and the damage has already been done.Period.
I don't fully agree with illegal use of software, but it's his parents' job to tell him what's right or wrong, plus he's doing this at his own risk.
Plus, isn't the U.S. (to some extent) a free country? ;)

Eh, but it becomes a public (well, not really, since this forum is a privately owned website) matter when he askes how to do something that is illegal.
But yeah, I'd say Wastland this thread too...
