Anyone like country music here? I love it..... like 90's to today's country.

There are few genres I won't listen to, so it means relatively little that I like country, but, yes, I like it. Born in Iowa, sort of have to like it. ;)

I HATE listening to todays country music, but I have lots of respect for the genre because it had a big part in the creation of rock-and/or-roll music.

EDIT: Some of the old stuff may not be too bad.

I'm not a big fan of what passes for country in Nashville these days - Toby Keith, et al. I am a HUGE fan of most of the "alt country" artists signed to the Bloodshot record label - Nico Case, Kelly Hogan, Nora O' Connor, Jon Langford/Sally Timms (of Mekons fame), Alejandro Escovedo, Robbie Fulks, etc etc etc - excellent bands every one of them. Not twangy - lost my wife, car, job and I love America type crap.

Check it all out here:

It's grass roots, maybe not blue grass roots, but somewhere in there. I think "Live Like You Were Dyin'" is one of the best pieces of lyrical expression and good 'ole country sound, key change and all, that's come out in a good while. I also think "Whiskey Lullaby" is one of the most pathetic pieces getting air time within the genre, but hey, that's Country Music. :)

Well I was drunk the day my maw got outta prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But before I could get to the station in my pickuuuuuup truck.
She got runned over by a damned ole traaaaaain!

one of the few country songs I'll listen to...
none of the current 'artists' write their own music or lyrics. My opinion only...

Modern country music shouldnt even be called country. Its just alternacrap with a country label slapped on it. Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard...these are great country singer-songwriters.

Duff-man says...I suppose this should be in the music forum...but here's my reply anyway. Like aricher, the stuff that Bloodshot (http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/) puts out is awesome...Sally Timms has the most amazing, soothing voice...her "Cowboy Sally" albums are fantastic. I like *real* country music - not the crap that comes out of Nashville these days pretending to be. Neko Case (love her "Corn Sisters" album with Carolyn Mark) is very good, Sally Timms of course, Nora O'Connor. Laura Cantrell is pretty good too. And of course the really "ol' time" stuff like Hank Williams is classic stuff. Johnny Cash of course too - his early fusion of country and rockabilly was brilliant - Luther Perkins was responsible so a lot of his sound back then...great guitarist....oh yeah!

I like old country and some new country. There was a period of about ten years where country music basically sucked. Mid 80's to mid 90's. Haggard, Cash, Jones. Geniouses. That's all there is to say about that. It's getting better, but it will never be like it was. These days, I can't even tell it's country untill the vocals start. The music doesn't sound country much anymore. But I still listen to it.

Maybe it's because deep down inside I'm a good ole Southern boy. I was born and raised in the country. It's part of me, you know? I love putting on my old jeans, turning up some ****-kicking country music, taking my old Ford truck out for in some mud, and getting drunk on the tailgate. I can admit that. I even have a few cowboy hats that I can be spotted in on occasions.

Hello, my name is MacDawg, and I listen to country music...

There, I feel a lot better now ;)

Sure I listen to Country, almost exclusively

Shania's great, but I prefer Faith Hill or Sara Evans
Martina McBride might have the best voice of all of them

But looks like Keith Urban will be the new face of Country before long

Rascal Flatts, just awesome, they have some great songs

Hard to beat Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, George Strait
And Brooks and Dunn are fabulous as well

Also a little partial to SheDaisy

A fan of too many to mention, but these are just a few.

Why do I listen to Country?
I guess the song by Trace Adkins "Songs About Me" says it...

cause it's songs about me
and who I am
songs about loving and living
and good hearted women and family and God
yeah they're all just
songs about me
songs about me

I disagree. THose guys are good, but that was then, and this is now. Yeah, it's gotten to be more pop-country......but it still has a big difference from something you'd hear on the other radio stations. Not just the sound, but the lyrics too, and there are other people like Alan Jackson who still come up with tunes today and he is true country.

Basically it has modernized, but all music has. I much rather listen to my country station than some crazy "POP" station that has anywhere from Brittany Spears to 50 Cent.

In what other Genre can you really hear lyrics that talk about God, America, Soldiers, ect ect ect......it's about life and that's why I like it.

Big & Rich is sweet stuff even though its modernized country. Sadly, most of my "country hating" friends cant even handle them.

I don't like most mainstream "country" music. Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, etc...it's just pop music with a country twang, nothing more. It's not real country music as far as I'm concerned.

There are a few artists I do really like...Dwight Yoakam, Brad Paisley, and Vince Gill for example. Most of the other country-ish stuff I listen to is either alt-country or bluegrass. I like Alison Krauss a lot, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Lyle Lovett to name a few.

A really great CD to pick up is Tony Furtado's "Within Reach." He's an amazing banjo player...anyone who plays any kind of stringed instrument could appreciate it :)

I listen to country music at least 75% of the time. The only music I don't like is hardcore rap. My iPod has over 3000 tunes and about 50% are country. My favorite country artists are Dwight Yoakum and Alan Jackson.

One modern country artist I've been getting into lately is Steve Earle. Very good stuff, not really "traditional" country, but what you might call "progressive country". I especially like the fact that he's political and speaks out against the war and the Bush administration. His lyrics definitely transcend the typical "wife left me, got thrown in jail" lyrics that a lot of people associate with country music.

I also like some other artists that I would definitely not consider country but that I've seen labeled as such.... bands like Son Volt and Wilco and the Jayhawks.

Oh, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've always loved John Denver. Grew up listening to him. Rocky Mountain High is essential for a road trip out West... :)

Steve Earle rocks. My favorite album of his is Copperhead Road, followed closely by The Revolution Starts Now.

I like listening to Allison Krauss, just because her Dobro player rocks completely out.

I like the Dixie Chicks, though admittedly is more because of their political leanings and that I think they are really cool. I'm not even familiar with any of their music.

Every once in a while, I'll spin some Merle Haggard on the 'ol iPod.

All listed above is the absolute limit of my country tolerance.

Ryan Adams--the only good modern country artist, formerly of the band Whiskeytown.

If any of you haven't heard of him, check out the album Heartbreaker. It is alt-country's finest.

Yeah Yeah Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown are great - also used to be on Bloodshot records. R.A. isn't the be all end all of "alt-country" and certainly isn't the "only good modern country artist." You really need to expand your horizons apple2991 and check out some of Bloodshot's other acts. Chances are if you like R.A. then you'll dig some of the rest of their roster. Outside of the old-school country acts (Hank, Johnny C, Tex Ritter, etc.) the Bloodshot band are the only ones I can stand.

As far as Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Brooks and Dunn, etc. are concerned just count me out as I just can't "feel" their music. To me what they produce are just window dressings of feelings - nothing that connects to the soul of humanity or what country music is about. That's just my 2¢ though. Whatever floats ya'lls boats.

The new Ryan Adams album is a throwback to his Whiskeytown days. Highly reccomend it.

I also like new country. People like Brad Paisley and Tim McGraw have put out some excellent songs recently. And 9 more days till I get to go down on the strip for the opening of Toby Keith's 'I love This Bar & Grill.' Im not too down with Toby but oh man will it be fun.

But I have to agree that country has lost something. Whatever happened to drinking whiskey and heartbroken tales of southern women? Nowadays we have 30 something frat boys singing about their wives (Rascal Flatts I'm looking at you. Have you seen the singer? haha!) and life at home with the kids (damn you Lonestar).
Country music is fun. Thats why people like it. Long live country.

((As a shameless plug, I wanna be a county artist in the worst way. Im kinda trying to re-invent it. Labels are interested in a big way, and Im getting excited. Check my sig. ))

Back in the day, I used to play in a rockabilly band. We could never get a show because we were too country for the rock clubs and too rock for the country clubs. Still makes me laugh. Maybe we should have played a Cash tune. That might have gotten us a job.

We could never get a show because we were too country for the rock clubs and too rock for the country clubs.
Wasn't that an Alabama song? "Too rock for country, too country for rock 'n roll" -- something like that.

I used to listen to country a lot. At some point a couple of years ago it lost its appeal. I like Hank Williams Sr. and think "Cold Cold Heart" is one of the best songs ever made. Nothing contemporary (that plays on mainstream country radio / that I'm aware of) comes close.

For me there's a fine line between sentimentality and cheesiness, so I couldn't get into Christmas country songs.

Also, ignorance may be folksy and somewhat worthy of celebration when it's harmless. However, sometimes it's just stupid and harmful. Examples: the song where the singer says he doesn't know the difference between Iraq and Iran (the differences do matter) and the songs where the September 11 attacks and the Iraq war are linked.

This is not meant to be a political post; it's only intended as an answer to the original question and explain what my reasons are.

Man. I hear you. There was that song, Tough Little Boys by Gary Allen, where the song was about becoming a father, but the video was a bunch of soldiers coming home, or something to that effect. I just never understood it. Don't really like the song that much either. It's far to over played.

Not a fan of the Dixie Chicks but at least you have to admire them for speaking their minds about George W Bush after 911 instead of jumping on the patriotic flag-waving song bandwagon. Ain't nothin' patriotic about using false patriotism to sell millions of records and not donating a cent to the troops, their families or 911 victims. Not turning this into a political thread here but that really drives me nuts.

Steve Earle is the man - great political songs as well. A friend of mine as lucky enough to take guitar classes with him at the Old Town School of Folk Music here in Chicago. He said Steve is the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet and one of the best and brightest political conversationalists he had ever met - same goes for Mark Eitzel from American Music Club who also calls Chicago his part-time home.

I've got to admit, despite my previous post saying I don't like most mainstream "pop-country" music, I do like the Chicks. Yes, it's poppy and some of their songs are kind of corny, but they are genuinely talented. Their album "Home" is one of my favorites, and much more "traditional" sounding than some of their previous efforts.

I can't stand Big and Rich, or Shania Twain (or basically all girl country except the Dixie Chicks....)

Besides the more "pop" like Tim McGraw, Lonestar, Rascal Flatts... I do like more of the traditional country like Craig Morgan, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, and Kenny Chesney.

My new fav. song is Darryl Worley... "If something should happen".

I listen to a lot of different types of music, but I mainly listen to country. It was basically the only thing played in the house when I was growing up. A lot of the music being called country these days, I just can't stand. I'm used to the old-time country music. Fiddles, steel guitars, and instruments like that, not the pop-styled music of today. George Strait and Alan Jackson are really good in my opinion. You can still hear fiddles, steel guitars, etc in their music. One of the newer country artists that I will listen to is Joe Nichols. He's pretty good if you ask me, and he's got lots of potential.

If you want country/western or "cowboy" music, you need to check out Riders in the Sky. They're awesome!! They've been on a few of the Pixar soundtracks. All three of them are very smart. One has a doctorate in physics but gave it up to play music. The other two have either masters or doctorates as well. Not that that has anything to do with their music, just a little extra info. You should really check them out!

My Dad is totally into old school country, and he can't stand what's passing for country nowadays. So I grew up listening to Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, etc etc. And I HATED IT! I'm a total and complete Metalhead. However, now that I have gotten older I can appreciate the musicianship. Still not my cup of tea though.

See?! You are the perfect example of how I wish more people could be... understand that not ALL country (if you could even rigidly define any genre of music) or all Mexican polka, haha, or whatever, is the same. The lines are blurry between genres and differ so greatly per individual song. Thank you Powermac666 for making my day (er, hour?). :p

I love Wilco. I just saw them a little over a week ago in Berkeley, actually. I also love Uncle Tupelo and the other post-Uncle Tupelo stuff (Son Volt, namely).

In short, I love a lot of old-ass country music and some older country rock (I'm thinking Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Carter family, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Gram Parsons-era Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and so on and on. . .), and I like quite a bit of modern so-called "alternative" country. I can no longer identify myself as a fan, broadly, of alternative country, however, as I have found much of it is no better than modern country pop, which I loathe. Some others have already named off some of those Bloodshot guys. . . I dig on some of that stuff.

Totally agree. I absolutely LOVE the early stuff, especially the country/rockabilly stuff.

I used to absolutely hate country music, but I realized that I just hated the country pop music you hear today. It's like me saying that i hate all rock and roll because of Good Charlotte.

Aside from the really early stuff, a lot of punk bands (believe it or not) wrote some excellent "country" albums. The band X had a side-project called The Knitters which was super-excellent, the band The Screamin' Sirens were also amazing. Lately, I'm really diggin' Hank Williams III -- it's great stuff and I really wish more people would like it.

There are also bands like Lambchop that I've been listening to lately. There is also a band called The Geraldine Fibbers lead by the amazing Carla Bozulich. Lots of country elements, along with her side project Scarnella -- both with the help of the amazing guitarist Nels Cline.

That's funny sh#t right there...I'm still laughing... :D

But as far as my tastes in country go it is all about bluegrass, it is pure and incredibly complex and difficult, and tight.

Del McCoury Band is so good that it hurts, guys like Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and of course Bill Monroe. bluegrass players have serious chops.

As for regular old country, I think that Shania Twain rocks (with the sound on mute) She is so friggin hot....(drools on keyboard) ;)
