I'd like to know the technology they have behind this...because if it is a backwards compatible cd (i.e. it can be played in exisiting cd players) then why wouldn't a bit-for-bit copy of the cd work?
Am I correct in thinking that a "protected" cd would have to have some imprinted serial number that would idenify it as unique by whatever device is reading it?

I believe this Protection works by installing a virus onto your computer. Not a malicious virus, but a virus in the sense that it's being installed without your knowledge. Perhaps it has your consent via some fine print that says, if you break this seal you agree to let us use testicles for research. This virus keeps track of how many times you record this CD, and doesn't let your computer see the CDDA to make music rips of it. Hell, I could be way off in left field, it's early.
