Holy cow, this is old, isn't it?
I thought this was available a couple of weeks after the new PowerBooks came out.

If you look over the history you'll find your answer:
iScroll2 (http://www-users.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de/~razzfazz/)
iScroll has come a long way since its first manual install kernal extension and startup item. This article is reflecting that it's now ready (and has been for a while now) for the masses.

Cool. I'll swing around and try it on my iBook. :D

I've been using this on my PowerBook since about the third public version. It's a huge pain to reboot every time you update it, which shows how good it is since I take the time to keep it current. If you have one of the supported laptops, you should definately try it out.

Does this really work the SAME as the Apple version?
I thought it was merely an alternative to Apple's, but not one that truly offered the same functionality/choices/behavior.
Is it now really "the same?"

I have a supported powerbook (17", 1.3GHz), and this has never worked for me. :( The author has sent me special versions, and everything looks like it *should* work, yet it doesn't. :(
AND, during testing, I uninstalled Sidetrack, and now Sidetrack wants money and reminds me of it all the time, so now I don't use Sidetrack anymore either. (I normally use a mouse, or I wouldn't mind paying)

No, it's not the same. This allows the older trackpads to emulate the new trackpads by utilizing a touch width property of the hardware, build on top of the trackpad drivers for darwin. The site answers this question better than I can.

Thanks. The article says it's the same as Apple's but I didn't think it was.
(Anyone in the know want to post how Apple's version works, vs. how this one does? I went the the official site and didn't see a comparison. Apple's doesn't do iPod-style circle-scrolling does it? That would be neat--although XY pan would be more useful maybe.)

If I recall, it's the trackpad itself which provides the function, and all Apple and iScroll have done is create a driver which hooks into these functions.
So, in theory, it should be the same, though iScroll allows for more customization of it.

It FUNCTIONS the same. The methods of doing this are different for the different tools (Apple's USB trackpad on the new PowerBooks and the iScroll driver for older ADB trackpads on the other PowerBooks/iBooks) but functionally they work the same. Plus iScroll allows for circular iPod-style scrolling, something Apple's new trackpads don't do.

No.
The Apple solution was to provide a whole new set of hardware that does most of this, and provide a driver which hooks into that new hardware.
The iScroll solution was to add this feature to the existing (open source) ADB driver for the old scrollpads, recompile, and release for all.
IMHO, I'd love to use this, but I'm addicted to SideTrack's trackpad corner taps for expose, dashboard, and right-click. Scrolling anywhere on the trackpad using two fingers would be nice (assuming as others have noted that the stability/jerkiness problems from earlier revisions have been addressed), but I can't live without my trackpad corners. Oh well.

Thanks--it's the functionality that matters to me, not how it's done. If this ACTS just like Apple's version (plus some extras!) then that's good--I'd like my habits to carry over between both machines when I get a new PB next year :)
I was waiting for this to mature--I'll try it today.

just downloaded iscroll and love it. I like the right click function just as much as the scroll

I do like scrolling with two fingers anywhere MUCH better than edge-scrolling.

For me, edge-scrolling is much more natural, and fits my workflow better than two finger scrolling. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

Just downloaded iScroll 2 a couple of hours ago for my 12" PB 1.33, and I love it. I only wish I'd done it earlier. Great app/driver, no problems with jerkiness that I have observed yet and the two finger right click option is awesome. Good work RazzFazz
