View Full Version : List of New iPad cases with working (and non working) on/off switch

Reading a lot of threads, it appears Apple changed the polarity of their on/off magnet. Some cases with a beefy magnet still work while many others that were designed for the New iPad do not. I would like to keep a running list of what works and what does not. Please post your results if you have a New iPad case that works, a New iPad case that does not work, or an iPad 2 case that both fits and the smart on/off switch works and I will add them to the list.

Edit:
Now that we understand that the iPad 2 was not sensitive to the magnetic polarity and the new iPad is, this list is dedicated to cases that work all the time or have corrected the issue. Many manufactures did not pay any attention to whether the magnet was north facing or south facing. The cases will work some of the time and some of the time they won't. Manufactures will go back to the top of the list if 1) they made a statement or told customers it has been fixed and bad units are not in the wild. 2) a list of several users in a row claiming it worked 3) lots of reviews claiming it worked.

I bought a case from Targus and roocase and was goign to keep the one I liked better. Neither case worked (though both descriptions said they would).

The Apple smart cover works fine. If they changed the magnet, how did Apple retroactively make the other cases not work?

This type of listing isn't going to be as helpful as we all hope it would be. Reason: I purchased two Maroo cases. The magnetic smart cover feature on one of them works perfectly with the new iPad. On the second one the smart cover feature doesn't work at all. The only outward difference in the two cases is the color of the leather. The red leather one works fine, the black leather one doesn't work at all.

So, as I said, good luck with a list.

Targus VueCase worked without issue for me.

Seems to be sporadic for people so can't get a verdict really.

The Apple smart cover works fine. If they changed the magnet, how did Apple retroactively make the other cases not work?

It could potentially be the SIZE of the magnet (maybe Apple used larger ones that manage to cover the repositioned sensor in the new iPad), or it's also been suggested it could be the polarity of the magnets.

I'm leaning toward the polarity issue. Reason:

On my black leather Maroo case that doesn't work properly for the magnetic smart cover feature, IF I push the edge of the cover/lid back toward the spine (which positions the right edge about half inch in over the face of the iPad), the iPad goes to sleep. In that position, it's the edge of the magnet (embedded in the cover) that is over the iPad's sensor. That puts the opposite polarity of the magnet closer to the sensor. The sleep function works!

Why on earth the polarity would be an issue is beyond me. But that's certainly the way it appears.

Bottom line, it would appear that some third-party cases got assembled with the "north" end of the magnet facing down and others got assembled with the "south" end of the magnet facing down. This reversal of polarity apparently didn't matter for the iPad 2 but it seems to be a rather significant issue for the new iPad.

To add to the list, the Sena Florence case does NOT work with the sleep/wake function. I suspect the tiny magnet used for the sensor is out of place for the new iPad and too weak to overcome the distance. I think some other cases still work as they have larger, more powerful magnets.

JUST got home with the VersaVu and now see this thread.

I am not too sure i really care if the sleep/wake function does not work. Been living without such a function on my 1st gen so this is not a deal breaker.

The new iPad being a smidge thicker than iPad 2 does conscern me a bit, as I am sure it hinders the new iPad locking into this case when compared to the iPad it was designed for. Sure, it says "For 3rd generation" but I doubt verty much this case was made 0.8mm deeper to match up with the 3rd gen. There hasn't been enough time between announcement and product to come out with new cases. (I mean, if they DID get the new specs in advance, they'd have also known how to redesign so the sleep/wake works).

Might keep it, might not. Gonna pop a friends 1Pad 2 into it and if the 2 fits better, the case goes back and I wait for the re-engineered VersaVu.

I agree completely. One side of the new iPad fits perfectly in the plastic tray and the other side is above. I can live without the smart cover but this bothers me so it's going back.

Well, I had to press it rather hard all around to get all the locking edges to engage. It seems pretty secure. I held it above my mattress and shook with much vigor to see it it dislodged at all and it did not seem to move one bit. Since I rarely took my 1st gen out of the house (heck, it was rarely out of my living room), this just may do.

I also think it is polarity. I spent 10 minutes or so measuring and playing with a small rare earth magnet because I was about to cut a small slit in my targus and add my own magnet before I realized it had one but was not working. My testing found that one pole of the magnet had a larger sweet spot and worked better than when I flipped it over. I put the magnet on the lid where the targus magnet was and it stuck to it which was the opposite polarity from what I found worked best. The position of the magnet was where I was going to put mine so I am thinking it just needs to be flipped over also

It could potentially be the SIZE of the magnet (maybe Apple used larger ones that manage to cover the repositioned sensor in the new iPad), or it's also been suggested it could be the polarity of the magnets.

I'm leaning toward the polarity issue. Reason:

It is a very good price so if you don't care about the on/off (you are probably not reading this thread) or want one for your ipad2. I wonder if we will see more manufactures dumping their bad products for cheap?

My Maroo Roto II (red leather) works perfectly.
My Maroo Moko II (black leather) doesn't work.

Reason: The polarity of the magnet in the cover is reversed on these two covers and the new iPad 3 has a new type of sensor/switch that is sensitive to polarity.

Just went to the Targus website to check to see if they mention anything about the non-functionality issues mentioned here.

Found some interesting results. I found two pages about the VersaVu for the 3rd gen iPad and NEITHER even mentions a "MAgnetic on/off" function. Not a hint. There is even a 1:10 video showing off the features and no mention of the function there too.

I guess they now realize the function did not work and edited it out (until I guess they fix the issue and have new product ready to ship).

Note though that the slim case page DOES mention the magnetic on/off.

Its quite possible that its a polarity feature that apple has turned on on the IP3 otherwise, it the placement or size of the magnets in the covers that is the issue.

The apple smart covers continue to work on IP 2 and 3 and these covers have lots of magnets.

Blame your case maker for going cheap and using fewer magnets cause they figured out it would work on the ip2.

Im gonna rant once more about Targus now that what you said is true ( I checked too)...What a shame a company does this and doesn't admit to a quality control issue...Its not apples fault...even if they did pull a fast one, why didn't Targus SPOT CHECK them on the way out the door!?

I can confirm that Targus is a polarity issue btw....BUT...you have to pull the ipad out and lay the front of the cover on top of it for it to shut off! so technically it DOES have a magnet but I certainly wouldn't call it a 'feature'!

Only ONE of the magnets in the Apple Smart Cover is for triggering the sleep/wake switch. The other magnets are for holding the cover closed to the front of the iPad.

And, at this point, there can be little doubt that the third-party case problems are related to polarity, NOT position. While it's certainly possible that some manufacturers have been sloppy with the magnet placement, that doesn't explain why a case will work with the iPad 2 but not with the iPad 3.

Sorry, but the speculation that Apple moved the location of the sleep/wake sensor appears to be a red herring. Apple's own Smart Covers are working because the triggering magnet always has the correct polarity (Apple knew they were going to eventually change that sensor switch to one that is sensitive to polarity).

Mlang2000
Mar 18, 2012, 12:30 PM
Many of these case manufacturers don't have the same quality control as Apple to have inserted the trigger magnet in the exact same direction every single time. That would explain why we're getting mixed answers for the exact same case. Polarity didn't matter until now so many assembly workers wouldn't have paid attention to which way that magnet was being loaded.

I make wooden covers for the iPad 1, 2, and the new iPad. I can state with certainty that the problem is the polarity of the sleep/wake mode switch. I have sold hundreds of covers for the iPad 2 with no problems with the sleep/wake mode. When the iPad 3 was announced and Apple was touting their cover for the new iPad, I assumed that since Apple said their cover would work for the new iPad, I assumed that my cover would work with the iPad and began selling them as such. Wrong! I had sold a few cases when I got my new iPad 3/16. I was in a quandary when I noticed that some of my covers in inventory worked and some didn't. After a few hours of hair pulling, I found that switching the polarity of the magnet I had placed into the wood to switch on the sleep/wake modes solved the problem. I have notified those that I had sold covers to and am rectifying the situation. Thankfully, only about 1/2 are not working. I had a 50/50 chance of getting the right polarity on the magnet! I am new to forum and I hope this eliminates some confusion.

I think you should toss the hit or miss category and if the on/off switch isn't reliable for everyone, it should be a miss. I think it is better to know whether or not a manufacture has addressed the reverse polarity issue by 1) having a good enough magnet to start with or 2) fixing the issue.

Anyone else have a thought?

Can anybody confirm for me if the Marware Microshell Folio is working? I work abroad and am having my iPad and case brought to me in a couple of weeks so I can't test it out before having it brought over here. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The On/Off Sleep function works but the case doesn't fit my new iPad. I actually broke off one of the corners trying to get it to fit. Marware has released a new version that should be shipping out soon for the new iPad.

I think I read others having issues with the STM Skinny, but mine from my ipad 2 works great.

I have tried 5 STM Skinny for the "iPad 3" from 2 seperate stores and none of them worked.
However, with the cover closed and sliding it about 2-3mm to the left so that it exposes a bit of the iPad glass, it then works.
Seems like the magnet is too far to the right.

This is the classic sign of the magnet having the wrong polarity facing the iPad. As you slide the cover edge (and magnet) back, the edge of the magnet has the polarity needed to trigger the sleep/wake sensor.

I need to retract my previous statement. I realized that I have a Targus Vuscape, not a Versavu as I previously stated. The Vuscape that I have is the new iPad specific model and is model number THZ157US. I can confirm that at least on mine, the sleep and wake functions perfectly. I purchased it yesterday at Best Buy for $39.99. Hope this helps.

It is indeed the magnet polarity. I just performed minor surgery on my iPad 2 Vaja Libretto case and all it took was to turn the magnet over and all is good! Works like a charm. I was a bit hesitant to attempt this but it was surprisingly easy, just pulled pack the fabric at the edge of the case and pried the magnet out with a small screwdriver and flipped it over. The fabric residue was still sticky enough to adhere back to normal with no sign that it had ever been altered.

I have the Targus Click-In case and the sleep/wake was working with no problems but it had a bump under the front cover, so I swapped it for another one at the weekend. Unfortunately, the sleep/wake on the new case didn't work.

I read about the polarity issue and, like TroyJam above, decided to perform some some minor surgery on the case. I wasn't able to peel the cover back because of the type of case it is, but I got a scalpel, cut around the magnet, took it out and flipped it round, glued the cover back down and now it works flawlessly. It doesn't look perfect, but it will definitely do until confirmed new iPad cases start coming out in a month or so.

Portenzo claims its cases will work with the new iPad, and that the reason old cases don't is because the new iPad doesn't fit them right.

I've sent them the link to the proof of the polarity issue, and a list of several large case manufacturers who have acknowledged the problem.

Hopefully they'll realize it's an issue and correct it before they finish the case they're making for me. If not, I'll probably just return it.

So now that we understand that the iPad 2 was not sensitive to the magnetic polarity and the new iPad is, I think I agree with you. Maybe this should just be a list of cases who are selling only correctly working cases and those who are not.

Likewise, the YooBao Executive does not always work, as I got one that doesn't.

Also, not that it needs more support at this point, but my son's Thomas the Tank Engine train only activates sleep/wake on my new iPad with the front magnet, where both the front and rear magnets sleep/wake my old iPad2:D

I have a Targus VueCase and it does not work. I think you should make a category for "hit and miss".

I found that a Targus Slim Case fitted very well once it was popped in on all four corners. Tight fit with no shifting.
BUT magnetic on/off is hit and miss.
Opening the case switched it on about 80% of the time.
Closing the case pretty much never switched it off.
Also, if the top cover shifted slightly (like it would inside a bag, or even if you are holding it and walking along) it would randomly switch the iPad3 on.

So, ignore the claims on the cover that it works with iPad3 magnet --- it doesn't. Returned it to Best Buy who accepted it without complaint.

Because every company until late last week did not realize you have to put the magnet in a certain way, you cannot make a thread like this have any credence. Because a mfr can make 5000 cases like Targus, and half or more will have the problem, and half will not. Cases being made after they discovered this will all work like maroo is shipping now, but not some ones avail last week. You take your chances. I have have two targus cases that work perfectly, others do not that have the wrong side of the magnet inserted in the cover....

I bought the VersaVu hoping it would work. Put my iPad 3 in and closed the cover and the iPad stayed on.

Later that night, I was staring at it. The VersaVu allows you to rotate the iPad so that you can stand up in landscape or portrait, so I thought I'd play with the rotation.

I rotated the iPad 180 degrees, closed the cover, and the iPad turned off with that confirmation "click" noise. Rotating it allows the cover to close in a "right handed" book style, which works for me (how most cases open). With the lid closed, there is no magnetic "pull" to keep it closed (not sure if there's supposed to be). Have to use the elastic strap to keep it shut.

Another case that worked fine for me was the Snugg case. Fit nicely, nice magnetic pull to the lid, and the iPad turned off when closed.
