Well I have been up in the air about a case and I like the way the smart case works but don't like how it can break away.

So I picked up the incipio smart feather for the iPad 2 and a black leather smart cover and I love it. It's slim and the smart cover just works, I was worried about the camera hole but it is dead on and it just works great.

So if you are looking for protection and a slim fit those 2 are perfect

I have that combo, along with a Moko II that I impulse bought when they were 1/2 off. I like the slim combo, but definitely need something with more protection like the Moko at times. Unfortunately, it looks like the Moko has the same magnet placement issues others do, though they were very prompt and will be taking care of it.

I bought the Smart Feather as soon as they went on sale. Should be here in the next few days. I'll post back with my thoughts, but a major factor was the fact that it locks the smat cover in place.

Do any stores have these cases or are y'all getting them online?

I imagine the stores don't have 'em yet but thought I'd ask.

Hope this helps

Fart. I almost grabbed one but figure it wouldn't work and grabbed a Speck Fitfolio instead. It's nice, but I just hate folio cases. Back to WM tomorrow. Thanks for the info. Waiting on my NGP to get here!

I tried two different incipio feather cases for iPad 2; they both fit, albeit a little tight with the camera hole off by about 2-3 mm on the back. Also, I am noticing a bulge across the middle of the back, I am assuming this is from a tight fit. Are you seeing that as well OP?

Just wondering, did Apple "fix" the smart cover problems that I constantly saw when they were released. Such as ripping, magnets being flimsy in holding it to the screen, or marks/scratches do to unnoticeable friction between the side of the bezel and the smart cover's magnets?

I would love to get it, but I'm so unconvinced about the smart cover...

I've been using a leather smart cover with the iPad 2 and now my new one with no issues at all. I'm constantly folding it in half and rolling it to prop it up on a desk too.

+1 on that from me. My frost one clips in but does not sit flush to back and bulges out. It also cracked and broke in 3 to 4 places after 6 months on my iPad 2, but that is another matter.

Both are good, but I prefer the Belkin as it protects the top/bottom of the iPad (3rd gen) a little more imo. Either would be fine.

I just received my new iridescent gray cover. I paired it with a navy blue smart cover. The package had a sticker on it and said for the new iPad or iPad 2, so I guess that this new cover will fit both.

The fit is very good, it isn't loose or too tight, I was a little concerned pre-ordering that they might not have it exactly right. I don't think they had an actual iPad 3 tp try it out on.

The sku numbers between the iPad 2 and the new iPad are different. It may be compatible but the new model does have subtle differences...

Thanks for posting the pics, just a couple of clarifications on the Belkin cover:

The metal stripe visible on the left side is a magnetic one? Does it lock the smart cover when open and folded back?

Does the snapshield have the same hinge-locking mechanism as the Incipio Smart Feather in order to prevent the smart cover to easily detach from the iPad?

I have pre-ordered the Incipio Smart Feather but the Belkin seems to be really close to the former and much cheaper....I could cancel my order and go for the Belkin

thanks vm

Yep, metal strip locks the smart cover when foled back... Love this feature :D

Nope, snapshield doesn't have the hinge-locking mechanism as the Incipio, but doesn't bother me.

Also, IMO the snapshield protects the top/bottom a little more than the smart feather. It covers more, but both are good. Can't go wrong with either.

The locking hinge was what steered me to the feather. But it also steers people away from it. Choices are good.

Can you fellas that got your new cases comment on how much or little bulk it adds to the back? Does it feel at all significantly larger? Heavier? How's the grip? What makes the Incipio a "Smart" Feather? Does it help with the on/off thing or is calling it "smart" for marketing? Also, how well does it "reinforce" the Apple Smart cover magnets? Any chance that the back cover will scratch the ipad where it snaps in?

Lots of questions, so thanks in advance.

It is really thin and light - can barely tell it's on and it. I'm not sure what is "smart" about it, other than it locks the Apple smart cover on - which I really like as the smart cover constantly came off on my wife's iPad 2 which led to picking up a different case. Not sure what you mean be reinforcing the Apple Smart cover magnets as it doesn't get in the way or cover anything that the smart cover comes in contact with. Haven't noticed any scratches, but it's only been a day and a half.

It doesn't feel significantly heavier or thicker, but I'm upgrading from an iPad one so it still feels thin to me. It's got a rubbery of feel to it, but is still smooth and not too "grippy". What makes it a "smart" feather is that you have to use an Apple smart cover with it.

I'm not sure what you mean by help with the on/off thing. If you you are asking about the auto sleep/wake function that third party covers are having problems with, this uses Apple's cover so it's not an issue. If you your asking if you can remove the smart cover with the case on, no you can't, it locks it to the iPad. That answers your question about reinforcing the smart cover magnets. It will also keep the magnets from scratching your iPad since you can't take the smart cover on and off. I don't think the smart feather will scratch the iPad unless you take it on and off a lot, which I don't plan on doing.

That's the reason I went with the Belkin Snapshield Secure. Gives a little more protection on the top/bottom of the iPad. I posted pics in this thread...1st page , take a look. Only thing that's missing is the locking mechanism for the smart cover.

Good luck

I sort of like the look of the iPad back with the logo showing. The SGP ones have the Apple logo cut out which is nice, but I like the fact that these secure the smart cover to the iPad.

Any thoughts and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I have an original iPad with a skin on the back. The original iPad has flat sides so they are uncovered and they look fine, no scratches at all. I am reasonably careful with it, but it has traveled with me quite a bit and looking at it right now I can't find any wear. I put it in an Apple dock every night and sometimes there's some hunting to find the connector. I'm amazed that there are no scratches on that side at all. After two years I got less and less careful how I docked it, sometimes sliding the iPad all over before I found the opening. There is only the slightest amount of wear on the edges of the opening.

jazzy639
Mar 18, 2012, 08:16 PM
Thanks for this. I think I may choose the Belkin instead as I specifically don't want a locking cover. There are other cases that look exactly like smart covers but also have a back protection (that don't cover the front bezel). However it would be good to be able to remove the cover easily to hold the iPad in any orientation.

So I think the Belkin for me...

I'd like to know if they changes anything between the 2nd and 3rd gen. If anyone gets a chance to compare I'd like to know. Maybe they adjusted only the camera hole? I picked up a 2nd gen today, but haven't tried it. I know everyone is saying they do fit just fine. Dimensions on the Incipio website are identical:

Measurements

Length: 9.46 in (240.20 mm)

I'd like to know if they changes anything between the 2nd and 3rd gen. If anyone gets a chance to compare I'd like to know. Maybe they adjusted only the camera hole? I picked up a 2nd gen today, but haven't tried it. I know everyone is saying they do fit just fine. Dimensions on the Incipio website are identical:

Measurements

Length: 9.46 in (240.20 mm)
Thickness: 0.05 in (1.22 mm)
Width: 7.48 in (190.00 mm)
Depth: 0.39 in (9.85 mm)
Weight: 2.4 oz

The iPad 2 case fits but creates slight gapping between the shell and the belly of the case, with minor lifting at both ends. If you keep everything clean, no problem- but if you let dirt and dust get in there you can look forward to a scratched aluminum case, sooner or later.

Camera alignment is slightly off but there's no vignetting.

As a temporary holdover until the model-specific Smart Feather is released, the older model case should be fine. I'm using one until I get to Japan later this week where I'll likely pick up either the new model Power Support Air Jacket case or Tunewear eggshell case (which, even with the inflated yen, is about 30% cheaper than the ones sold here).

Well, I can't get mine to fully snap onto my new ipad. Kind of unfortunate because I like the case. I can get it almost all the way on, but can't get one last corner to snap on.

If you mean sticks (magetically) to the back with the smart cover completely flat on the back, then no it doesn't.

That is correct it does not

I am having second thoughts about this case, although I like the slim feeling of the combo it does feel like its very fragile. (If that makes sense to anyone )

Thanks for the quick response ScubaC and Str8buc. I ask because this video concerns me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X37RgKuN_U&feature=youtu.be

I think what the video highlights would annoy me to no end. Unfortunately, it seems like most thin smart covers/cases are like this. Not sure if I have much of a choice...

Anyway, I'm mainly concerned about the flap when it's opened and turned to the back. Makes it look cumbersome to hold the iPad when not using it on a table.

Quick question, will the smart feathers work with a skin installed such as a best skins ever? My first guess is it may not, but it thought I'd ask instead of assuming....

I sure am glad I decided to actually TRY IT OUT instead of going on what I and others thought...

Incipio Smart Feather for iPad 3rd generation works with a Best Skins Ever skin installed. It installed easy and doesn't seem to bow or flex or anything.

Note:

I've had the Smart Feather for all of thirty minutes, so no idea about long term interactions with the skin.
I bought the black one, a translucent might show "watermarking" or whatever the term is for when the skin is against a clear case in some spots and not others. I don't know if this will or will not happen.
No issues with fitment, clipped on easy, seems secure. Came off easy also.

EDIT: I'd also add that if you intend to take the Smart Feather off frequently you may not wish to do this. It appears the edge of the Smart Feather could potentially catch and lift the edge of the skin if removed frequently. No apparent issue when it's just on there, only the possibility when removing the Smart Feather.

Got my frosted today. I'm running a icarbons back with red logo underneath and it fits perfect - no stretching, just a simple snap on. The ends that are open are covered by the CF so I'm good all the way around. I'll hold off on the new Zum now, this works very well. It would be perfect if it was slightly more clear....

You need a clear back case to show the iCarbons. The frost case makes the skin look out of place.

This is kind of a weird question, but, for those of you who own the case, how easily do you think I could cut off the smart cover locking part without ruining the case?

I'm interested in this case only because it seems to be the thinnest and lightest, but I still want to easily be able to remove my smart cover at any time.

Got mine yesterday. Everyone has their quirks. After having a naked ipad for a week and then a ipad with just the smart cover for a few days, I definitely wanted a back with the smart cover locked in. I can see why others don't want that but I definitely do.

I know there's a Zum coming out. There's not a ton of info on that case outside of this forum. Sometime down the line, I might try that, but this case was getting no complaints and I was tired of being overly careful laying my ipad down.

My impressions so far:

1) it doesn't seem to add noticeable bulk to the iPad. I've never been a person to care that much about bulk, but I've started to change my thinking on that as I lug my 2008 macbook pro from meeting to meeting. I use this to read a lot, and I wanted to preserve the weight and I like it.

2) The issue with it not covering the whole top and bottom is not killing me right now. I like that I don't have to worry about port access. I have noticed that I am being a bit more careful than I'd like about how I lay it down. Intellectually, I know that the exposed part is not touching the surface unless it lands at an akward angle. I'm just getting used to it.

3) Different colors are fun but I like watching movies and TV and I'm really picky about visuals. I don't know if I want to watch a 1080p movie with a lime or orange colored frame around it. In theory, it seems like it might be distracting. So I am digging my all black iPad (with peeks of aluminum ipad silver).

4) the back surface is sleek and professional. I wish it were a tad more "grippable." It's definitely more gribbable than the naked iPad but, again, everyone's mileage varies. I suspect the more "grippable" backs also feel a bit heavier. So I think they've accomplished the happy medium here.

5) Seems like I'm okay with no magnet in the back. Not sure I miss the smart cover staying open when folded all the way over. If I I'm using it that way, 90 percent of the time my hand or a surface is already holding it in place.

6) Oh and yeah, it locks the smart cover in place. Already making the user experience better for me.
Overall, it's a good purchase and I'm glad I didn't wait much longer.

A magnet on the back would be great for my uses. I could then hold it like a naked iPad and use a stylus with my right hand.

It's not as protective as other cases if you drop the iPad, but Feather + Cover is a good compromise.

I am thinking of getting the Twelve South Compass stand as it would give me more angles to prop up the iPad for reading, viewing videos, etc.

I just received my Translucent Mercury Incipio Smart Feather and thought I would share some photos. I currently have a Translucent Mercury Feather on my white iPhone 4S and love the way it looks/feels. So I've been waiting for Incipio to release this color for the iPad. I ordered it yesterday and received it today!

It is made of soft touch plastic that adds minimal thickness to the iPad. As you will see from the photos it has a nice smoked grey color. This color matches well with the dark grey smart cover, offers a nice contrast to the white iPad surround and my favorite part, it blends in with the aluminum back.

If you're on the fence, this is a great addition to your (new) iPad.

I believe I've decided on the Incipio cover for my new iPad, but debating on what color for it. Also want to get a new case for my iPhone4S, figured I'd get the same color as well.
