I'm not one to promote apps, but there's app called Hiss that has been released as a free public beta. It automatically listens for notifications intended for growl's API's and reroutes the messages to Mountain Lion's native notification center. I've been using it myself for a few days, and although it's somewhat of a sparse tool, it does the job.

I'll have to look forward to that when I get on Mountain Lion (not a developer, and don't want to mess with the preview software now anyways). I used to love Growl, but with going to paid software and developing problems for me, I switched to Herald for Mail and dropped all the other notifications I had been getting. How well does it work with Hardware Growler?
