a year or so ago, macworld's unix tip delt with making hidden apps have a semitansparent dock icon. this was possibly the coolest mac mod that i have done. unfortunately, i only remember about half of the command:
Dock.apple.com showhidden ~bool yes
something like that. anyway, to anyone who can help, i apprecate it

defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool yes

i dont know the unix command, but i know that if you download Tinker Tool (http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html) you will have that option, and more.
TT is basically a GUI for most of the nifty little unix things like that

A few years ago, one of my Linux friends told me a Linux/UNIX nerd joke about banging your forehead on the keyboard and hitting return to find new commands :D

Really? I just usally go poke around in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin ;)
