Is a credit card necessary to gift apps?

Title says it. Do I need a credit card regardless of whether I have any credit from gift cards if I want to gift an app to someone else?

And supposing I do, and I tie the card to my account, will the card get charged, or will I see a deduction from my credits instead?

Good question. I never tried gifting apps yet. However, I was wondering wouldn't it also allow you to pay out of your stored iTunes credit in your account? Considering everything else in iTunes can pay off of your iTunes credit that you may have accumulated via iTunes cards and redeem codes.

when i read the "terms" for gifting i decided to just tell my wife I'd DL the app. I wasn't too sure either as it says needs a credit card.
