hey everyone, ive been having difficulty with youtube on both safari and firefox for months now and hoping there is a fix or something that can speed up the buffering. my internet is 15Mbps and that is not the problem. i have the settings on 240 or 320p my g4 cant play any higher with flash. it just takes youtube so long to load on their homepage and even embedded youtube from other sites will not even load. i have a download manager on firefox that lets me download the clips in every format but as of the latest firefox install it does not give me the option to download until everything is loaded on youtube including the dozens of videos on the right hand side. i believe my adobe flash is up to date. any suggestions would be great.

Do you really mean Firefox? Or TenFourFox (http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/)? Firefox hasn't be updated for PowerPC in a very long time.

What version of Flash?

If it's just YouTube we're talking about, most folks feel that MacTubes (http://macapps.sakura.ne.jp/mactubes/index_en.html) provides a better experience. Set the player to Quicktime rather than Flash.

Agreed. Op - the number of times we have to say this, flash on a PowerPC Mac is horrid. Mactubes &/or YouView will solve your YouTube needs.

The browser 'Camino' has the option to turn off flash & remove ads. which will speed things up dramatically too.

Why aren't there any stickies in the PowerPC section? This comes up so frequently it's ridiculous.

I think everyone that reads in the PowerPC section should write one PM or email every visit to the Moderators, till they hear us or we are all banned. :D

I've never encountered a single youtube video I couldn't watch in mactubes with the player set to quicktime. Do you have the latest quicktime installed for your OS?

In addition to mactubes There is also Youview. It pretty much does everything that mactubes does, but in order to download you need to pay the developer 5 bucks. It uses ffmpeg, so you must have Perian installed for it to work. I think its only marginally better than mactubes (less CPU intensive).

To watch embedded video on youtube and many other sites with quicktime I use viewtube. Its a greasemonkey script, now that you have tenfourfox you can install greasemonkey, then go to userscripts.org and install viewtube. It will replace flash with quicktime and 360p streams no problem embedded in the browser on a 1.07 ghz ibook G4. If you have quicktime pro (just google that) you can also download the file once its fully loaded. You can also use viewtube with Safari, Omniweb and iCab provided you have SIMBL and Greasekit installed. Google be your friend. SIMBL doesn't play nice with Demeter though.

Downloadhelper extension is also a must for tenfourfox. With that extension the world of webvideo magically opens up, if it can see the file you can download it and play it back with any number of players (VLC, Quicktime, Niceplayer, Mplayer, Coreplayer), or copy the url of the stream and stream the content, even HD in Coreplayer.
