Super Smash Bros. Melee. Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball, etc. Another of my personal favorites is Eternal Darkness. It's an amazing game that was under-promoted and therefore forgotten, but it is so good. :)

Mario Tennis is a classic. Zelda Wind Waker if you have the time to spend on it.

Zelda Wind Waker was awesome. I also really like Mario Kart: Double Dash and Viewtiful Joe is a must have for the system. Soul Caliber 2 and X-Men Legends are great games, IMO, although they are available on other systems too.

If you haven't tried the Wavebird controllers you should pick one up. They are comfortable, work well and it is very nice to be uncorded.

Firstly, get a Wavebird :D

Alright, best GameCube games:

Zelda: The Wind Waker is ABSOLUTELY awesome.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best multiplayer fighting game there is IMHO. And it's fun in single player too.

Metroid Prime is one of the best GameCube games. You can pick it up for $10 used at Gamestop and $15 new. The graphics are incredible and the detail is just stunning. The rain drops on your visor, the X-rays and heat signature of every object in the game, the steam on your gun when it gets hot, the water running off your armor when you get wet, the steam on your face, the way bright flashes reflect your face...etc. The style of gameplay is very different than most games, give yourself a bit to get used to it before you passed judgement; when I started the game I hated it until I got two-three hours into it. By the time I got to the final boss (17 hours into the game) I was so addicted that within three days of beating the game I ran out and bought Metroid Prime 2. However it should be noted that I was never a Metroid fan before this game. Anyone who liked Super Metroid should immediately buy this game. IGN rates it 9.8 out of 10 and states that people should buy the system just for Metroid Prime.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is also absolutely awesome. You should not play it unless you've beaten the first one or you'll be wondering about a lot of stuff (not to mention that its a brand new game and costs $50- play the first game first). I'm still on this one, I have 10 hours put into it and I'm trying to beat it. It's somewhat similar to the first game except you have to travel in between multiple dimensions of the same world to get places.

Rogue Squadron 2. Best Star Wars fighter game ever, period. No multiplayer sadly.

Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike. It gets mixed reviews. It adds on-foot levels that are a bit simple, and the fighter levels don't have the same difficulty as the first game but are still pretty hard. IMHO it's a great game. And better yet, it has the entire game of Rogue Squadron 2 available for co-op mode, and it has a versus mode.

Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2: I have VJ2, haven't beaten it yet but its a pretty darn good game. The bosses are obscenely difficult, I'm stuck on one of them at the moment.

Spider-Man 2: You probably already have this for other consoles but if you don't, it's great.

Super Mario Sunshine: Ignore the people complaining about this games' theme; the game rocks when you actually play through it.

Really, if you like 2D Metroid games - stay the hell away from Prime.

If you enjoyed Mario 64 - stay the hell away from Sunshine. It wasn't all that great.

Same applies to Mario Kart. They really changed the game too much for my taste. I practically cried with I played 'Double Dash'. Mario Kart was one of those 'sacred' games for me (like Castlevania and Metroid).

Rogue Leader was pretty fun. I'd probably get that if you could find it for like $10 or less. But I don't think those games hold a candle to X-Wing, TIE Figher or X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter.

Splinter Cell? Great games (minus a few 'wait-a-minute-I-shot-that-guy-in-the-face-he-should-be-dead moments). However, I wouldn't suggest it for anything besides the Xbox. The controls on the Gamecube just felt too awkward for my tastes. Rent it I guess, see if you like the setup.

Viewtiful Joe - I absolutely hated in every way. It's one of those games where you just love it or hate it. The good news is - that you can get it for about $5 new. Judge for yourself I guess.

The only games I'd suggest are:

Zelda

Smash Bros. (sure would enjoy a sequel before I die)

Pikmin (a unique RTS-style game)

And, Resident Evil 4 - if you can stand not being able to side-step.

Hope you enjoy the Gamecube more than I did.

Personally, I think you'd be wise to spend your money on a GBA instead - but that's me.

ok!

Metroid Prime 1: Simply awesome. jaw dropping game. nothing more than stunning.

Metroid Prime 2: takes the original, adds more story, loses a bit of the original Metroid feel. but other than that a really fantastic game. very difficult too, should play the 1st game before this. no GC collection is complete without these.

Smash Bros Melee: enough said. the upmost pinnacle of multiplayer games! single player is good too. only thing it lacks is online ability :) hell i got this back in 2002 and i only just unlocked the last level about 4 months ago. still to get all trophies

F-Zero GX: i've been playing this a LOT recently. even more so now i found you can actually unlock the AX courses (an extra cup/5 more tracks) so im now trying to complete it on Master. people say this game is impossible. its hard sure, but SO addictive. probably my fave cube game.

WindWaker: again, its awesome. such a contrast to Twilight Princess, but its very fun to play.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes: possibly the only good MGS game there is. or at least that I enjoyed. very cinematic.

Mario Party 5: seriously, nothing beats a killer 4 player on this. i got it really cheap one day as an impulse buy and its just brilliant. never less than 4 players though. NEVER.

Mario Kart + Mario Sunshine: not as good as their N64 counterparts, but good if theres nothing else left. i personally loved Sunshine, especially the first level.

Rogue Leader 3: saw this mentioned above, and i absolutely love it. RL2 was my first cube game (incidentally i bought this BEFORE my cube :D) and this game is just the same but HELLOFALOT more arcade based. ive exhausted all the good works in my vocabulary so im going to Dictionary to rekindle alliances with old ones.
RL3 is tremendous.

and they're just the ones that REALLY shine for me, the addictive ones i spent years playing in a drooling mess infront of the TV. there are good games (games i'd rate less than 8/10) like Timesplitters 2, WaveRace, Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Tales of Symphonia (which i sadly haven't played but hear its on par with Final Fantasy 7) and Baten Kaitos.

there are a lot of good games out there. enjoy.

Jul 5, 2005, 06:21 PM
Ok, just to clear things up on the RPG front:

Tales of Symphonia is nowhere near FF7. Sorry, that game wasn't very good and does not deserve to be placed up upon the mantle with some of the FF games, as well as Chrono Trigger.

Not much different from the Dreamcast version either.

And Baiten Kaitos?

Hope you like mediocre card-battle games.

In sum, if you want an RPG - the Gamecube is the last place you want to look.

And while we're at it - FF:Crystal Chronicles wasn't very good either. It was a way to sell Gameboys basically. Cool concept - but carrying around a bucket for hours on end = not fun.

Plus, it's not really an RPG as much as it is a 'hack and slash + bucket-carrying sim + spend money on a gameboy + cable to play multiplayer'' game.

As for Metal Gear Solid? It was good - aside from the crappy controls. Personally, I still prefer the original Playstation / Windows version - where first-person aiming isn't an issue - since it doesn't exist. I found the third-person system from the older games to be less cumbersome. The update for the GameCube had too many 'Jet Li' stunts in the cinematics - I didn't dig that at all. But if you can't play the original version - I'd suggest picking this up.

Well, if anything, at least you know that Smash Bros. is a sure fit.

Pikmin (a unique RTS-style game)

One of my favorite games ever. Pikmin 2 was awesome too. :D :D :D

Jul 5, 2005, 07:23 PM
Pikmin, and Pikmin 2 are must haves, their a couple of the few games that keep me using the consoles :D

I would love a mac or PC port, imagine playing it at a nice crisp 1280x1024 with all the extra effects real computers can manage

I quite enjoyed mario sunshine, not as fun to play as mario 64, but a good game none the less

Got bored of metroid prime before the first level finished (can't stand gamepads for that kind of game) my dad enjoyed it though, same with most of the games i've tried on any of the consoles,

Personally, i think the cube is best when playing more than slightly childish games with a few mates :)

I have to say the best game I've played on Gamecube is probably Beyond Good and Evil.

Zelda: WW and Tales of Symphonia come in second.

Viewtiful Joe is good, but some stages simply annoyed the crap out of me.

Resident Evil 4 is OK.

Metroid Prime was awesome, but after you put it down and play another game it was hard to go back to.

Can't WAIT for the next Zelda game. Have my eyes on Sims 2 as well. (I don't have a beefy enough Mac or PC to play it)

On of the best aspects of the Gamecube it that it has great games that are fun to play with your friends. (Well, I guess that depends on how many/how geeky are your friends). My favorite games of this kind are:

Super Smash Bros.
Mario Kart
Soul Calibur II (my fav)
Mario Party games

As for single player games, I would really suggest you get:

Zelda (there's a new one coming out as well)
Beyond Good and Evil
Viewtiful Joe
Metroid Prime (haven't played MP 2 yet)
Eternal Darkness
Tales of Symphonia
Resident Evil 4 (I've heard it's amazing)
Paper Mario

Nitpick; I think you mean RS2, not RL2.

I agree though, absolutely great games.

Resident Evil 4

Super Smash Bros. Melee

First, Xbox isnt much better.
Second, a better card game than Baten Kaitos was PSO 3. Really underrated, and great off line multiplayer. Especially if you like other CCGs. Personaly, 1000+ cards for 50 bucks is cheaper than MTG.

You apparently didn't try many of the good GameCube games. And your statement about Metroid Prime is the ONLY time I've ever seen anyone say that. EVERY reviewer said they were shocked that Nintendo preserved the gameplay from 2D to 3D so well. IGN gave it a 9.8 out of 10.

In sum, if you want an RPG - the Gamecube is the last place you want to look.

Better than the XBox, which has almost no Japanese support.

PS2 is the best place for RPG's. GameCube has a few though, and the upcoming Fire Emblem is a biggie.

I was very pleasantly surprised myself. Not only was it a transition from 2D to 3D, but also a transition from sidescrolling to First-Person Adventure which caused many (including me) to be a little skeptical...

...but then it came out and so many of us were blown away. It still felt like a Metroid game, but from a whole new perspective, literally. :)

I like how GameSpot puts it.

http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/metroidprime/review.html
Let's get right to the point: Metroid Prime is the best GameCube game to date. It's one of the best games on any platform this year, and, for good measure, it's also the best game yet in Nintendo's highly acclaimed Metroid series. Many were rightfully skeptical about whether an unknown Texas-based developer could take the classic open-ended, side-scrolling action adventure gameplay formula of the Metroid series and successfully translate it into 3D. And these are the people who will no doubt come away most impressed of all with Metroid Prime, which is in every respect a pure and true successor to the series of games that inspired it. At the same time, those who have never played a Metroid game before are likely to be just as taken with Metroid Prime. This first-person action adventure game is filled with so much detail, style, and originality that literally every gamer should play it.

9.7 out of 10, editors choice.

Being an RPG fan myself, I do sometimes feel disappointed by the Gamecube's RPG offerings. But, I've played most of the ones that have been released (from Dark Alliance to Tales of Symphonia), and haven't had a shortage of RPGs to play, even though I sometimes envy the ones available for the PS2.

And don't forget Paper Mario - it is a damn good RPG as well. And we'll have Fire Emblem soon. I'm really looking forward to that game.

Too bad some sequels didn't make it to the gamecube, like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II. I really enjoyed the first one (good ol' hack n' slash :D)

Yup. It sucks when you've played the a game and the sequel isn't released for your console. (I'm looking at you, Soul Calibur III! ).
I actually have Two copies of Dark Alliance II for Xbox. Pretty fun game. No idea where the second disc came from..

It's kind of a weird game. Played it with my sister and a friend, and neither of them really understood it. Both are more used to more..uhm.. normal fighters (my sister digs Soul Calibur II). Think I might have to try an play it again some day now.

As for Tales of Symphonia, my girlfriend is a FF nut. she loves it all (and like all fans she says it declined after FF7 etc) but she willingly compares ToS to FF7 without any problems. its also quite common of magazines to compare, and forums. maybe you don't think its as good but a lot of people think it can stand its ground. but i dont like any kind of RPG other than old-skool GBA ones (Golden Sun, FF1+2, Fire Emblem)

cant believe i forgot Animal Crossing! I *REALLY* wanted that but thought it a waste as the DS version is on the horizon. its had stunning reviews though.

as for Metroid Prime... i do think it was the first metroid game i ever played (never had it on NES, never owned Snes etc) and i instantly loved it. and if i recall correctly it was the second highest scoring game at Meta Critic, second only to Ocarina of Time.
what i love is hearing FPS fanatics going ape over the controls in Metroid like its some kind of FPS game.
and Prime 1 has MUCH better visors and weapons than Prime 2. in my opinion.

OH! does anyone know where in the UK you can pick up the special collectors edition of WindWaker? my girlfriends after it and im too evil to lend her mine :D

You've gotta get the hang of it (and play it in multiplayer) before you get the hang of it. The game is one of the best multiplayer games of this console generation.

Take a looksie.
http://cube.ign.com/articles/166/166387p1.html

9.6 out of 10.

It's not a normal fighter where you can win by hitting buttons repeatedly. A skillful Smash Bros player is all over the screen. Smash bros plays differently than any other fighter on the market and its great.

Most consider Marth to be one of the best characters.

What I am about to say will shock many.

I am a top notch Marth player, and Ganondorf is my second favorite. But I can wipe the floor with almost anyone using Marth. I fly all over the place slamming with the sword. When I see someone getting in a position to use their special attacks (I know the special attacks of everyone in the game) I use the counter attack every time. Marth. Rocks.

Well, I did some testing, and I have found the actual most powerful character in the game.

It is...Peach. That's right, Peach. Her controls are whacky but when you get the hang of her she is the most powerful character. I can take out ANYONE with Peach. Nobody can touch me. Not even my friends playing Marth. Peach can even take out GigaBowser. The hover ability, the flaming-butt-slam move, the crown smack and several other of her moves are extremely useful. I love falling and hovering right over the ground, floating over the stage and slamming everyone in my path :)

Agreed, while the Echoes visor is sort of cool, I prefer the weapons and visors from the first Metroid Prime over the second.

The light world/dark world mechanic is cool though. The second game both surpasses and fails to live up to the predecessor in different ways.

remember when i got Smash Bros Melee. probably the most unique game buying experience yet... and because i love this PB keyboard here goes!

Just got my gamecube about a week prior as a present for not going on holiday, something to do like. my mum gave me a wad of cash to look after myself with as everyone left at about 4am for an early morning flight. but i couldnt get back to sleep so i went on GameFaqs and saw glowing reviews for this fighting game starring the Nintendo crew. think i set off from my house at about 7am not even thinking about what time the shopping centre opened. it was beautiful, 7am walking through country lanes and eventually big town roads. got there at 8, had to wait an hour for everything to open. sat on a bench outside Game -_-
then it opened. ran home. had my TV and desk all messy (plugged my brothers amp into it with wires all over the place, that was at 6am haha, this is a guy who gets up at 11am daily)... played it. thought it was just godly awesome all before 10am. then the Commonwealth torch thingy was being carried past the corner of my village so me and my mate went to see it all, seeing David Beckham was nothing compared to my new addiction. ran back. played it with my mate for a good solid 8 hours.

there was a police guy on a horse talking to me too but i was half asleep so i couldnt remember much. or even if it was real O_o and the car who drove past me playing Spice Girls.

BUT just so this post contributes something other than a crappy story. games you should look out for;
-Killer 7 looks insanely good.
-the new Zelda. nothing more need be said
-Pokemon XD looks very interesting. if it has the gameplay of the GB/GBA games then be warned
-Harvest Moon 2. im a sucker for Harvest Moon :D
-secret new Kirby game, because its Kirby.
thems what im after.

I don't own the game, but I play it regularly at a friend's house. He has it really mastered with most of the characters. Sometimes, when my other friends and I beat him, he uses Jigglypuff to humiliate us and beat the hell out of everybody.

After that, I challenge him in Soul Calibur II. I'm deadly at that game using Nightmare.:D

I do the same thing except with Yoshi.

Other game suggestions:

Super Monkey Ball -- different concept. It's really addictive and very frustrating at times.

Donkey Konga (yeah..the song one) -- Really, really interesting concept. Lots of fun with any number of players.

Mario Kart -- Good stuff, and it's all about the winged koopa, btw.

Bomberman -- I didn't really get a chance to play the single player mode, but the party mode is just as fun, if not as fun as SSBM or Mario Party.

Have fun with your new cube....and buy a wavebird or 2 or 3. Trust me.

Well, I can't just read through a Gamecube topic without giving my two cents...or in this case, my five favorite Cube games.

1) Zelda: Wind Waker. Absolutely amazing. Don't be turned off by the cel-shaded graphics, as this is an epic game. Give it a chance.

2) Metroid Prime. This took the series in an awesome direction. Oddly enough, I can't stand Metroid Prime 2. It just doesn't feel like a Metroid game.

3) Tales of Symphonia. I'm not big into turn-based RPGs, and I think FF7 is vastly overrated (although I LOVE Chrono Trigger). The battles in this game take place in a real-time arena and its extremely fun to pull off a string of combos. One of my favorite RPGs ever.

4) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I actually enjoyed this platformer more than Mario Sunshine, since that game just felt like a bunch of annoying fetch quests. The graphics are beautiful and detailed, and the story is enchanting. The fighting turns up a little on the short side, but other than that, this is probably the best platformer on the Cube.

5) Super Smash Bros. Melee. Need I say more?

Honorable mentions go to:
Pikmin 2
Starfox Adventures
Mario Tennis
Paper Mario: The 1000 Year Door
Beyond Good & Evil
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

You can't really go wrong with any of these games. And if you have three other friends, Mario Party 6 is a must have. There's nothing wrong with Mario Party 4 or 5, but the pacing of 6 is a bit faster, and there are more mini-games.

The Sonic games are fun.

Sonic DX is pretty good. only problem i have with them are the bugs, very bug ridden, even Sonic Heroes. thought they might have fixed the engine by now.

love zelda's graphics, but was turned off by the wanky midi music (violin screech anyone?) and lack of any voice acting. sometimes i feel like nintendo has to be dragged kicking and screaming to get with the times. still liked the game a lot overall.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - After putting this game down for two freaking years once I got to the earth temple for whatever reason, I beat the game yesterday... I have never been able to pick up a game after two months, let alone two years, so this should tell you something... It's awesome, simply awesome.

Metroid Prime 1 + 2: Both great games, and like Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time made the transition from 2D to 3D amazingly

Eternal Darkness: Best current gen survival horror game other than RE4... It's awesome.

Resident Evil 4: Best survival horror game ever, in my opinion!

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - The original game is my second favorite ever, behind only Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and in my opinion the remake only improved upon it! It is simply put, awesome.

Here are some other games that you might enjoy:
Resident Evil (The remake)
Animal Crossing
Mario Kart: Double Dash!
Pikmin 1 + 2
Rogue Squadron games
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Star Fox Adventures
F-Zero GX
Tales of Symphonia

As well as others.

Also, when it comes out: The Legend of Zelda: The Twighlight Princess - It looks absolutely breathtaking. I can't wait.

By the way, I own all three major systems, and I probably play the Xbox most, followed by the GameCube, and I rarely play my PS2... Recently, however, I've been playing my GC alot (What with finishing Wind Waker (which I plan to play through again), Playing Resident Evil 4, and Metroid Prime 2... I'm also gonna play through the Zelda games on my Collectors Edition Disc, which should last me the summer :D). You won't regret buying the GameCube as long as you like action/adventure games, platform games, survival horror games (thanks to RE and Eternal Darkness) and those weird genre defying games... Actually, there are games for basically every genre on the gc, so you should be able to find a game for anything.
