I created this thread because those in the ibook thread wouldn't let us gloat about new powerbooks and whatever they may be (like new form factor?!?!?!, speed updates, lower prices, faster bus, dvd, backlights for 12 inch, xenographing on 17 inch laptops, etc)

You PowerBook waiters can just sit and wait. The iBooks will be updated first.

Any chance that they will be updated before Cram and Jam is up? MacWorld Boston is next Tuesday. They can announce both the iBook update and the PowerBook update. The PB is nearing the 6 month mark and I think that computer manufacturers should update there products at least every 6 months.

(That's why the powerpc chips were discontinued and changed to the pentiums because our apple computers had an overdose of powerpc, so now they gotta switch to pentium to get a high. Pentium - its like Apple except on crack)

I mean it would only make sense for Apple to update both lines before school starts. If they update both around late July/Early August that will be great for back to school.

Not going to happen. The PB probably won't see an update until MW Paris at the earliest based on their new 8-9 month update cycle. When was the last time Apple announced a new product or update at MW Boston? Have they ever? I can't seem to remember.

12" PowerBook £1,049.00 (£892.77 ex VAT)
1.5GHz PowerPC G4
512MB DDR333 memory
60GB Ultra ATA/100
NVIDIA GeForce FX GO 5200 (64MB DDR)
Full size Keyboard
10/100BASE-T Ethernet
FireWire 400
2 USB 2
Mini-DVI out
Ships with Tiger
vs 12" iBook with various upgrades to match closer:
£824.00 (£701.28 ex VAT)
1.2GHz PowerPC G4
512MB DDR266 SDRAM
60GB Ultra ATA drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 (32MB)
DVD/CD-RW
Bluetooth Module
AirPort Extreme Card
Two USB ports
One FireWire port
So for £225 pounds you get 300MHz, a barely better graphics card and miniDVI. Less battery life apparently? Less rugged?
And that's with Apple's pricing on upgrades. I could get a 1GB SoDIMM from Crucial instead of the Apple 256MB DIMM for just £88 (or get 256MB for £20). I could get my own much faster hard drive. Do I need bluetooth?
I'm sorry Apple, but I don't think that it is worth it at the moment.

Alright, welcome to the club! You are going to love your PowerBook!
Yeah! That's the spirit. That is what I did two days ago. Simply just decided to stop waiting and went ahead and bought myself a new PowerBook.
I ordered the thing Wednesday afternoon and it was delivered to me 24 hours later on Thursday. I could not believe that. I was amazed and blown away!
My new PowerBook is amazing too. It is sooooo sweet. It is so much better than I expected. You are going to love yours.
Definitely.
I love my PowerBook. I was going to wait for an iBook update but when the PowerBooks go updated, I said screw it, and went with a PowerBook and I never looked back.

Those really are not keynote or media event material.

Bear in mind that the PB line is likely the first to be switched to pentiums for the simple reason that the G4 chip simply cannot keep up and it was obviously impossible to get the G5 working in a laptop.
Steve jobs said that Pentium-based macs would be out in a year or so from the WWDC (and a complete transition - i.e. the PMs - in 2 years).
So that means that in 11 months from now(ish) PB Macintels are likely to be announced/rolled out. I wouldn't hold out for a major PB upgrade in the mean time If I were you! Apple are probably hard at work getting the Pentium hardware/software together right now for that date.
Don't expect much from Boston (as has been said before) or Paris on the Mac front. iPod however - may be a different story.
Personally I'm just going to sit tight right now and wait for the Macintels to start rolling out.

That seems to have been happening to lots of people randomly. I'd just assume its a glitch until apple announces something.
And I think there will be an in-between update with the PowerBook. They can't go without it if they want to keep sales up. What the update will be, I can't tell. It could be a G5 for all we know, because of IBMs new low power 970FX (though its unlikely because that we go against Jobs's reasons for going Intel). Or we may just see another speed bump, though I don't know how they could make it better.
And plus if they plan to update iBook, they'll have to update the PowerBook.

Okay all you powerbookers, I see that your thread is taking its time catching on, so I thought I'd help out. I just posted this in the ibook thread, and so I'm posting it here to get your side of the story.
I cant' really afford a pb, but let's pretend I could. I seem to recall reading that powerbooks were less durable, had poorer battery life, and worse airport reception than ibooks. If powerbooks were in every way vastly superior to ibooks, I'd be tempted to just go ahead and max out the ol' credit card and buy one. But I'm sure as hell not going to do that if it means paying $500 to get a machine that runs a abit quicker and has some nifty features, but doesn't do the things that I need it to do most (surf the internet in my back yard so I can do research and write papers outside).
CAR ANALOGY WARNING! THE FOLLOWING TEXT CONTAINS CAR ANALOGIES!
ibook = older Japanese car, does everything you need it to do with very little trouble, and gets great gas mileage; powerbook = fancy italian sports car, goes really fast, handles like a dream, but sacrifices fuel economy and reliability.
So, since you all are so convinced that powerbooks are so great, tell me why. I've never owned either an ibook or pb, but I want to learn all I can. Does anyone have any realworld experience with both in terms of battery and airport? Is there something I don't know? Illuminate me, oh powerful ones!

Does anyone have any realworld experience with both in terms of battery and airport? Is there something I don't know? Illuminate me, oh powerful ones!I have owned several various PowerBooks over the years (PB 100, PB 180, PB G3 Firewire (Pismo), PB G4), and today's iBook is essentially very similar to the PowerBook G3 Firewire (Pismo), with an G4 CPU, a different colored case, and other minor parts upgrades. The PB G3 Firewire (Pismo) has a black plastic and rubber case which I prefer much more than the Aluminum of current PBs and the white plastic of the iBooks.
The battery (new) in my PB G4 lasts longer than the battery (new) in my PB G3. Battery technology has improved greatly, so I expect that an iBook ought to have better battery performance than the PowerBook because it has less power demands. I am curious to do a one-on-one comparison. If someone with an iBook wants to compare, then please let me know. We can come up with a series of tasks to see how long a fully charged battery lasts on each machine. I know I am getting around five hours from a fully charged battery on my PB G4 doing just normal tasks: surfing the 'net, iTunes, watching DVD, etc. :)
I knew the Airport performance on my PB G3 Firewire (Pismo) was excellent compared to others' Wintel laptops, but didn't realize how excellent until I got the PB G4. The PB G3 Firewire (Pismo) with an original Airport card has easily ten times better wireless reception both in distance and strength than my new PB G4 with an Airport Extreme card. I can take my PB G3 Firewire (Pismo) anywhere around my house inside or outside and get very good wireless signal. With my new PB G4 I essentially must be in the same room as the wireless transmitter. That really makes me mad, because what's the point of wireless if I can't be mobile?
So that is my experience with those machines.

Ordering BTO options is what usually triggers the "Replaced with New Product" message. The order enters the system as a stock machine and then gets "Replaced with New Product," your custom BTO machine. :)
I think you must have ordered BTO options because I bought a 17" PB G4 last week and it arrived at my house 24 hours after I ordered it! :D

Apple only has 24 more days till it hits the Buyers guide average of 185 days or 6 months. Unless they pull an iBook right now (100+ days/3+ Months over average), we should see PowerBooks update near the end of July/early August. Personally I am waiting till mid September to switch. If it still did not update by then, I am still going to buy a 12" PB because the current revision is excellent for my needs and I want a free iPod Mini. :)

Outside and Apple Notebooks don't go together well, anyway (unless you work at night in the moonlight - coz as long as they don't use better displays for their Notebooks there's no chance to see anything at all as soon as the sun is shining directly onto your display).

I honestly think all 'Book updates are coming in September, probably a bit after Apple Expo Paris. That's just my opinion from the clues I have gathered.
If you order a stock machine (no BTO options) you have 14 days to return it for refund. BTOs are only returnable for warranty type problems. If you are really worried, then don't open the box for 14 days. Once the box is opened, then you have to pay a re-stocking fee. However, I didn't worry about it, and I think you don't have to either.
The next updates are going to be very small anyway, so is it worth wasting all this time waiting for a very small update? That is what I asked myself and the answer was no, so I ordered it and moved on with my life. Let me tell you, I am very glad I did. That whole waiting thing is off my shoulders, I am using my new PowerBook instead of waiting and dreaming, and I absolutely love my new PowerBook. :D

Any chance that in the upcoming revision of the Powerbook that the 12" will come with 512MB built in instead of 256MB built in and 256MB in the memory slot? Seems like a waste having a 256MB stick occupying the only memory slot. 512MB built in would allow it to be upgrade to 1.5 GB with no problem and leave the memory slot free to put what ever you want in there.

Seems likely- I mean, having that 256MB chip built in the Power Book G4 is a waste (needs to be at least 512MB). Hopefully Apple ups the amount of RAM you can put into the 12" Power Book at least 1.5GB (2GB, preferred.)

I agree. The same should be true for iBooks too, or maybe with less than a 2GB maximum. Either way, both 'Book lines should definetly come with 512MB RAM standard. You REALLY need at least 512MB to run Tiger comfortably.

I can't see them doing anything quite like that, but I do believe that a price drop will be a feature of the new model. LCD costs are rapidly dropping, and many others on this forum have rightly pointed out that the price gap between PC and Macintosh notebooks is now very significant.
The other possiblity is that the price will stay the same, but Superdrive will become a standard feature on all models. Thoughts, anyone?

I'm pretty certain that an update is imminent, I just ordered a 12" iBook because I need it right now, not in two months! Anyway, I ordered it with another 1gb stick of ram from Crucial, a sleeve from Shinza, a 20gb iPod and I chose to get a 60gb HDD and bluetooth with my laptop. This is going to be my first Mac ever, I used to hate them so much (until the G4, never tried a G4 or later) but looking at the market right now for a good 12" laptop that fits my needs as a graduate student who already has a powerful computer at home, I can't find a sweeter deal elsewhere. I'm not looking for an ultra-fast computer loaded with features, I was looking for a small, highly portable laptop that I could take some notes in class with it, that I could write papers on, that was durable, well built and that would last me for at least 2 years. Simply, there's no PC laptop that I could find that match my needs better than the iBook, at least in my budget. I know they are getting pretty outdated by now but they still can do pretty much everything you throw at it (except Coreimage and some games), is still a very capable laptop with a good battery life, a good keyboard and long lasting...
If you're looking for specs, look elsewhere as Apple is getting crushed by the PC market but when you look at what you want it to do, there's no reason not to pick one! I would have liked to have it updated, especially the HDD and having bluetooth with it, a 256mb increase in ram would probably be in the only available slot of RAM anyway but it didn't stop me from buying it, it's a tad more expensive but still a heck better than a 700m for example!
Now I'm waiting for it then I'll have to learn how OSX works after about 15 years of using DOS/Windows.... that'll be the hard part I fear!
tsk

Please, please, don't ever mention a G5 PB again. We've finally gotten rid of the "G5 PB Next Tuesday" threads. There will never be a G5 PB.
Apple is going to Intel. There is no way they are going to shoehorn a G5 in before they go to intel. First off, it's too big of a challenge, but how can they go to 64 bit, and then go to a 32 bit Intel Pentium M.
Not going to happen.

Now what? I need to buy an ibook for my daughter for college in the Fall and time is running out.
Anyone have any clues?? I'm amazed there hasn't been any speed bump or improvement since Oct 2004. And they still ship with a meager 256k ram.

Umm... At last check it was 256MB of RAM. ;)
My advice: buy whatever iBook is out just before college. Even if it's the current machine, it'll be a great purchase. They're still very cool machines and for most college uses, a 1.2GHz G4 is fine. :)

Except that when Apple made 512MB the default, prices dropped some. And with only 1 SO-DIMM slot, you want all the internal RAM you can get.

Then again, why are we surprised? Apple's about the green. Design, innovation, etc. is all marketing glib.

no updates, anytime soon. Laugable, for sure.
Then again, why are we surprised? Apple's about the green. Design, innovation, etc. is all marketing glib.
All about the green. That's the mantra. Customers can wait it out and feed more $$ into the insatiable Jobstown cult and get pseudo anointed outdated portables.
wait a second...what multinational corporation is not about the "green"? that brand "apple" belongs to a company...its not anyone's best friend. Besides, better Jobstown than Gatestown.

Well.. Tuesday has come and gone (per someone else's rumor). I was hoping there would be an announcement of new IBooks in conjunction with Mac show in Boston.
Now what? I need to buy an ibook for my daughter for college in the Fall and time is running out.
Anyone have any clues?? I'm amazed there hasn't been any speed bump or improvement since Oct 2004. And they still ship with a meager 256k ram.
Help! Any advice or insight?
I feel your pain. Same situation. Went to the Apple store in Alpharetta, GA. To heck with my daughter going to college. I wanted to walk out with a 15" PB. Oh the pain. Here's hoping for an updated iBook SOOON. End of Jul is my drop dead date.

As a college student who is still using the iBook my parents bought me the day before I left for school, I can say without a doubt your daughter does not need anything more than the current iBook and 512MB of RAM. I use a 700MHz G3 with 384MB of RAM everyday. I can connect to any WiFi spot with my original AirPort Card. I can run Office, Safari, Mail, iTunes, and iChat without a single problem. My iPod works fine with it and my digital camera with iPhoto is great. Is it Teh Snappy? No. Is it fine for most college kids needs? Absolutely. What program exactly does your daughter need to run that needs the power you are waiting for?

I recognize the IBook would be sufficient for her needs in college. But it would be great if it were up to the task of lasting her four years. Believe it or not, even though the computer is primarily for her education, her current IMac (for example) can't run the latest games she'd like to play :-) (Like SIMS 2). The demands for processor speed seem to ramp up all the time, and I'd just like her to have the latest machine (as opposed to a system which is already 9 months old!). Plus... apple is making 512 Ram standard in all its other systems other than the old IBook.
I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet, buy one this week or next, and then kick myself when new ones come out shortly. I just can't fathom Apple waiting this long before upgrades. They usually try to stay competitive with PC alternatives in the notebook market.

Yes, still waiting. We went to the Apple store to do a side by side comparison btween the 12" and 14" iBook. I was concerned with the portability issue....12" is really portable. My daughter liked the bigger screen of the 14" and said she'd probably only have it on her desk anyway. My son chimed in with, then why don't you get a desktop? I was thinking Mac Mini but would still have to buy a decent 17" LCD and that would put the price up there with the iBook and she's not into an iMac. So looks like the 14". Will wait til the end of the month b4 ordering. Guess I'll go with the Apple edu store and take advantage of the free 4gb iPod. The 14" is slightly more expensive than Amazon and you have to pay state tax but will eventually get a 4 gb iPod for free. As to ram upgrade. I ordered a 512mb module and installed it on my wife's 14" iBook. Think that it cost about $60. Pretty easy to install. I did go out and buy a "jeweler's" screwdriver set though. The philips head screwdrivers I had just weren't sharp enough. This time I'll be ready ;) Cheers

I have not lived in GA for a few years but are they still doing to 'Sales Tax Free' weekend they used to do before school started? If the are, why not take a road trip up to Atlanta and buy the iBook there? You can still get the EDU discount if you buy it in the store.

I've been reading these forums for a long time and thought I would register to respond on this one.
I had been waiting for a long time on the iBook updates but gave in and bought a previous generation PB instead. However, you may want to check prices at your daughters school if they sell Apples on campus. The prices at the University I checked were lower than the education discount on the web. I understand schools sometime have special deals or include cases, etc. Here are the prices I found:
12" iBook 1.2 ghz Combo $799
14" iBook 1.33 ghz Combo $999
14" iBook 1.33 ghz Super $1,199
And you can take advantage of the iPod Student Union promo... you may want to keep that however;)

If and When the Ibook comes out, whats the best way to purchase. I'm considering speed and price:
Apple Store - Will the store have inventory as soon as its announced?
Apple Website - Should we expect alot of backorders?
Amazon - I heard you don't pay tax. Is that true?
Its happening this week... I feel a powerful change in the force....

As far as the Amazon goes, this is copy and pasted from their website
"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, North Dakota, or Washington* are subject to tax.
* Please note, effective August 1, 2005 Amazon.com LLC will be required to charge sales tax in Kentucky. The new collection requirements will apply to all orders shipped and charged on or after August 1, 2005, even if the order was placed before August 1, 2005."
So you will only pay tax if you live in one of those states, also they have good rebates on them if you don't mind waiting for rebates, usually comes out cheaper then student discounts since you won't pay taxes after rebates.

I was reading the little blurb about the iBooks on the Apple website and thought it might hold some clues as to when they would be released. So using www.freetranslation.com, I translated it into Spanish, back to English, into Russian and then back to English again. This is what it came back as:
"Make a surf the Fabric, a chat with friends, makes you owe to them, they play play, burn still DVDS and CD to create their own, video of a masterpiece or musical. In their favourite coffee. At 2 o'clock in the morning. IBook G4 delivers an existing digital way of life to its backpack. "
I can't seem to crack the code. Any guesses?

... and 2GHz PowerBooks with 128MB X800 graphics at Paris?
Maybe Apple is moving to differentiate the hardware more by bus speed (PowerBook will get new 200MHz bus), graphics hardware (64MB 9600 vs. 128MB 9800 or better), better displays and fancy features.
But if this new iBook comes in $100 cheaper as well, then I think the PowerBooks will need a rather decent pricedrop to get a look in.
I'd certainly buy a 1.4GHz 12" iBook without a second thought. I'd only think twice about it if the 14" iBook went widescreen or had a higher resolution display.
Anyway, now I'm anticipating new iBooks tomorrow, and that's a bad thing!

Has there been any instance where a BTO product's shipping time increased dramatically and no updates occured? Is there a chance that the BTO shipping times on the ibook will revert back to normal? I suspect that an update is imminent on account of the international stores being either sold out or having long waits on standard product orders. Have they ever been sold out before without receiving an updated product?
Hopefully they would give the 12" ibook a 60 gig hard drive... 40 gigs is really a joke now. 256MB is unacceptable. I want to switch so badly! :p

Just to get this right, but the ibook update is somehow now being based on the itunes store reaching it's goal?, besides the shipping times, and the specs being rather low in this type of computer market, are there any obvious rumours at all? I want to switch, and have been waiting since the day before forever, but I just seem to be losing interest. Something's gotta give.
p.s. Even if I wanted to go buy one right now, it seems there are none available through my area. Furthermore, if I did order from apple, i have to wait at least a week and a half...to me that's the only positive factor in the behalf of a updated ibook. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE up the ram and lower the price.

That'd be great, but if they put the 7448 (faster FSB) in the ibooks they had better put it in the powerbooks too, or the howling of powerbook owners will be deafening.

Absolutely. I think apple hurts themselves by selling machines with 256. People buy it thinking it's usable with the base RAM, then they find the experience very frustrating and think macs are crap.
That said, there's no way it will happen on a "consumer" laptop at this point.
On another note, has anyone considered that they really can't update the ibooks without the powerbooks? A slight mhz gap and a few features like DVI, FW 800 (not even on the 12" PB), BT built in, better graphics, etc. are all that separate the lines already. Bump the ibooks to 1.4-1.8 and make the graphics 64 MB without a change to the PBs and why exactly would anyone buy a PB?

I sort of disagree. If I get a laptop with 256MB, I'll be forced to upgrade. With that in mind, I'd end up with a 1.25GB laptop. If they stick in 512MB, I'll figure it's good enough and just leave it for who knows how long :).

If they update the iBook to have 256 built in and then 256 in the empty slot then I will just end up taking away the extra 256 and putting in a 1Gig stick.
Updating the RAM really doesnt make a difference to me or to anyone that is going to want more than 512 RAM in their computer.
If they do boost it to 512 then I will need to figure out what to do with the stick I take out.

NO, the long BTO shipping times on the iBooks & Mac Minis in the USA store, and the long shipping time for stock models on the UK store is a HUGE clue. We saw this before the iMacs were updated, before the Powerbooks in late January, and before Apple announced the Tiger release date (they moved Panther ship date to several days).
The update should come this week or next. I think it is great timing to sell Macs, for back to school.

Even though I'm hoping that the rumours are true - I'm waiting to splash some cash on a 12" iBook - I'm taking most of the signs with a pinch of salt. It wasn't that long ago, the UK Store was listing the Mac Mini with the same 7 day shipping time for the stock item, as the iBooks are now, yet no update was forthcoming.
I'm hoping wrong, though. I'm refusing to order an iBook, until the stock memory is at 512, and the video card supports CoreImage.

Anyone here know if the shipping time on stock Macs always shifts to 1-3 days prior to an update? Have there ever been updates that happened while shipping remained "same business day" immediately beforehand?
I'm wondering because the iBooks are still "same day shipping" on the US site, which makes me think that an update tomorrow is unlikely. I want to avoid purchasing right before an update, but at the same time I'm really in need of a laptop ASAP for working on my dissertation and don't know if I can afford to wait much longer...

I live in Sweden and I ordered my Powerbook 12" on the 9th of June. Still havn't received it. I called Apple to complain and they told me they can't give me an exact date but they guarantee I will have it within 2 weeks. They also couldn't tell me why it took so long. What's up with that? Usually, it takes 3-4 days to receive it. I've been calling the retailer like 20 times since I placed the order and I've had them call Apple twice. So it's not like my order got lost or anything.
Do I dare to think that the Powerbook line is going to be updated?

Yeah, I saw that earlier in the thread. In fact that's the reason why I'm still holding out for the update rather than buying right now. I'm just wondering whether the lack of any change on shipping for the stock iBooks (non-BTOs) is a contradictory sign?

Well, I am not sure if this means anything at all but it is worth a go. I ordered a BTO 12" IBook Thursday night and it was built this morning. However, you'd expect a ready product to get out the door quite quickly. But no, it has remained as "preparing shipment" since then (ie. many hours).
I can speculate a few reasons for this, some more plausible than others. However, it cannot be denied that there is a possibility that my BTO was infact updated with new hardware and will not be sent until tomorrow (following an update announcement).
Though, it is more likely due to either a delay or it missed a mass-shipping schedule. But you'd think they'd ship all ready products by the end of the day. :/

Here's some more fuel for the fire...Amazon says they only have one ibook 12 inch left in stock BUT they usually would say "More on the way" or something to that effect. Also, if you notice the availbility for CompUSA on the right hand side, it says "Usually ships in 1-2 months".
I don't know if this information points to an impending update or not, but I thought I'd share it...
Edit: CompUSA own website says Usually Ships In: 2 - 4 Weeks...

We didnt see wacky shipping times but we even had comments from several online websites that ibooks would have already been updated. While im hoping upon hoping for tomorrow, I keep thinking that I'm setting myself up for disappointment and my desperate wishes are making something out of nothing...
But then again..... Here's to me being wrong! iBooks tomorrow woo hoo!

Whhhhaaat I ordered one Friday night and it didn't do ANYTHING yet. :(

Yes, this is a valid point, and I noticed this a couple days ago. Amazon ran out of the iBooks, and they began promoting the rest of CompUSA's stock, and now CompUSA's stock seems to be gone.
I'm thinking Apple isn't giving Amazon anymore of the current iBooks, for the new ones might be out this week??

You should consider a 12inch Powerbook. It gets close to 4.5 hours of battery life and it's built better than 90% of the windows laptops out there.

Most Apple employees working retail stores do not know when new products are released any sooner than the public. An employee I spoke with a week ago did not know the ipod merged lines until the very morning he went into work and checked apple's homepage. They keep everything so damn secret. However... camping out might still be fun

I want to avoid purchasing right before an update, but at the same time I'm really in need of a laptop ASAP for working on my dissertation and don't know if I can afford to wait much longer...
if you need it asap, why don't you use the computer you're on right now? sheesh.

but if they are updating the enclosure (or changing it drastically) wouldn't they wait until the apple expo in paris(Sept 20-24)? i think something like that is worthy of a keynote. they might also decide to speedbump the PBs as well (G5s anyone? :p ;) )... but it's moderately unlikely given that they were just updated in Feb. could happen, though.

Lets rally a crusade and head down to cupertino, seize the Apple campus in a glorious coup d'etat and force them to release the new iBooks. If they refuse, we'll build the damn things ourselves out of their flesh and bones. And if that fails, well... lets just ask them to give us some deals on ipod socks.

Considering that in order to have a widescreen display the pixel amount, by default, has to be different (in order to take advantage of the widescreen -- 1024x768 will work on one but it makes no sense) so I'd assume so.

Widescreen ibooks
I'd LOVE a widescreen ibook
But considering apple just switched the manufacturer for the ibook a few months ago don't you think this could be a little too early? Even if apple had the design and form sorted to build widescreen macs, it would be very optimistic for any manufacturer to deliver in two months [I am assuming the manufacturing contract WAS awarded shortly before it was announced, if it was awarded earlier widescreen ibooks could be out today:D]
Expect a speed bump, 64mb graphics - but I think that's all we'll get.
Paris Expo might be the date for the widescreen version.
Although apple are known for surprises.

I'd love one as well, I might have to spend an hour comparing the specs and performing mental value calculations before ordering if that is the case. Poor ol' credit card.
I think that was announced 3 months ago? Those companies can easily knock out that many systems in that time, I assume they've been making them for a month now after two months tooling and waiting for the 7448 (I'm ever hopeful!) to get shipped from Freescale.

so after nine months it is time for the son of iBook (or daughter, for that matter): a new formfactor including a new screen... let's hope the screen will be brighter so we can actually use the new iBook outside during the day. and I'd really like to see the motion detection sensor that parks the HD before impact when dropping your iBook. that would emphasise the iBook's robusteness...
and a small speedbump would be nice, along with better graphics card and standard 512ram...
just dreaming...;)

The thing that's been annoying me and making me doubt an update is the 'Same Business Day' status of ibooks on the US Store. But...if there is an update there will be large spike demand, perhaps Apple have prioritised initial supplies for the US online store to satisfy immediate orders and the Euro/RestOfWorld locations will need to wait until there is a more supply available, hence the 7-10 days everywhere else.

I can't see where they could go with a new form of the ibook at the moment.
All the 'consumer' range of macs have the white plastic- including the ipod [and excluding the mini mac]. The 'power' range is all metal - powerbooks and powermacs. So which way now before mactels?
One improvement they could make is on the keyboard/inside of the ibook - anyone think it looks a little cheap? Perhaps the introduction of metal inside similar to the powerbook could look good.
Personally I think they'll probably leave the designs now until mactels. I think the coloured ibooks are a thing of the past. The widescreen and speed/graphics bump would be the obvious route.

Going for over 6 months with out updating a laptop or any other computer is basically suicide for a computer company. New products are supposed to come out every 6 months or faster. This is plain stupidity on Apple's part. They should have updated it on schedule in April 2005. Then updated again in October 2005 and then by April 2006 it would have been perfect time to switch to Intel. Apple screwed up the schedule.

Linux is pretty good. There are some "weak" points though. One, the hibernation and power saving modes are not going to be as strong as OSX or Windows. Second, you're not going to have most software available for Linux. It depends on your needs. I can get most scientific software I need for Linux, but getting Photoshop is not going to happen (though they have free "similar" software you can use).

So, Apple, how's it going? Good? Cool, cool.
So, about these iBooks... A few weeks ago, I decided that today was the day I'd buy my iBook. After all, I thought, why would I want to wait for weeks and weeks without any sign of an update?
So I put a reminder in my phone. It's just gone off. "Buy an iBook today, unless there's a really good reason to wait", it says.
Damn you, Apple: If you'd just quietly gone on and nothing'd happened, I'd have bought an iBook today. If you'd have refreshed the line today, I'd have been over the moon. But you've done neither of those.
You raised the delivery times on iBooks and Minis so we thought there would be an update, but then you didn't release one. Is that "a really good reason to wait"? I don't know: it seems like it is, but I understand that the Mini had the same problem a while back, and that didn't result in an update (and the rumour sites were going on at that time, too).
So, Apple, what should I do? Wait, or not wait? Spoon or no spoon?
What I think I'm going to do is to wait until you get your stock back under control, or refresh the iBooks, whichever comes first. But I'm determined not to become one of those sad, miserable, iBook-waiters.
Oh, wait...

The real reason to wait is not the longer shipping times IMO. Those go up and down. The Think Secret article does imply that an update is imminent though. Doesn't look like today anymore, but they are usually right.

Whilst Apple are dithering around with their laptop line, IBM actually do release a new laptop - http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24739
2.1GHz Pentium M on 533MHz bus
1GB Memory
60GB 7200RPM
DVD/CDRW
15" 1600x1200 128MB VRAM
5.1 hours
2.3kg / 5lbs
$3229
Compares well to a 15" PowerBook specced to the save memory and drive
1.66GHz G4 on 166MHz bus / 1GB memory (1 dimm) / 80GB 5400RPM / DVD/CDRW / 15" 1280x768 (yes, the IBM has twice the number of pixels, but isn't wide) / 128 MB VRAM / 5.6lbs
$2,599
or the 17" (to get the better 'pixel space' than the above)
1.66GHz / 166MHz / 1GB / 80GB / DVDRW / 17" 1440x900 / 128MB / 6.9lbs
$2,949
I wish Apple would try to compete in more ways than just 'ooh, our software and design are better'.

Maybe next tuesday will be the day. The PowerBooks are approaching the end of there cycle. So it kinda makes sense to update them both @ the same time, so there specs won't be too close to each other.
Oh well, I'm ordering my 15" 1.67 in a while, so I'll be happy. That should last me until the Intel PB's are released.

Going for over 6 months with out updating a laptop or any other computer is basically suicide for a computer company. New products are supposed to come out every 6 months or faster. This is plain stupidity on Apple's part.
While I totally agree that it has been too long since the last refresh, it doesn't seem to be hurting Apple's sales or marketshare one bit, as it's been rising steadily now for the past year. Notebook sales last quarter were the highest they've ever been in company history. So the lack of updates have definitely not been suicidal in the least.

It may not be hurting Apple's sales at all, but think how much it would increase Apple's sales if they did refresh. There are probably 500 members on this site alone that are waiting to buy.

Agreed. I think this could be a great quarter for Apple, if they update the iBooks and Mac Minis, within the next two weeks. Back to school season, so people will be buying portables, iPods, etc. I hope it is a good quarter for Apple, I want to see another awesome conference call in October, despite the conservative guidance Apple provided last week.

Another wednesday - another load of rubbish on the UK Applestore clearance page.
Why do apple even bother with this page in the UK? - there's rarely anything worth mentioning on it.
A bit of a contrast to the US store that has just about every apple product going.
Apple has a very well established user base in the UK but rarely seems to make an effort to support us. No Cram and Jam etc [although there is a rumour that this starts in the UK on Aug 2nd.]
Come on Apple you are supposed to be an international brand. Stop being so USCentric. When Steve Jobs famously said "Stop selling fizzy sugar water and come an change the world with me" did he mean just the US?

Go ahead. Dell's quality has been going down the drain lately. Both my bro and sis have Dells. Both have been needin a lot of fixin in the 1 and 2 years that they had them, respectively. Sure the prices are enticing. But you pay for what you get. Just like American vs Japanese cars. American car companies (Dell) offer huge incentives (30% off, $750 off $1499, etc) just to sell there crap on to the consumer. Japanese car companies (other PC mfg in this analogy like Sony and IBM) sell their products much close to sticker without the incentives and do pretty well. If a company offers huge discounts, simply don't buy from them because they know their product is crap and just want to sell huge quantities. I prefer to buy from slightly more expensive niche brands like Apple because they offer the better product.
Another analogy. You could buy Gillette grooming supplies and help support David Beckhams $100 million dollar contract or buy like I do from smaller companies like Baxter of California and MenScience which cost more but put more money into developing a much better product.

I have to argue that Mac quality has gone down alot as well... I remember when the Newton and other mac portables were made in japan... you could totally feel the quality... and although macs still are quality products compared to PCs... they have definetly lost quality.. just look at the ibook, the keyboard and plastic is pretty weak....
I bought a powerbook a few weeks ago and I ended up with 3 DOAs in a row.... dead dvd drive, dead had, and a warped frame.... thats why i'm waiting for the ibook... no point in paying for premium when its not really a premium... if i'm gonna get a crappy computer, i might as well pay less for it.... now i'm suck with a gig of ram that i mght not be able to use on the ibook....
now comparing the dell to mac.. of course the mac is alot better... its amost 50% more expensive.... but my piont is that mac quality has gone down alot these days as well...

Yes, but the quality of everything has gone down. It's now about how cheap they can make something, so they get more profit in the end. Noone cares about the consumers (unless the law forces them to) anymore. Look at cars for example the ones from 70's and 80's are built much better, use better parts , get more gas milage, and last longer than the ones today. Heck My car and my computer are the only things i've owned that have lasted me longer than a a year. They just don't make quality like they used to anymore. Its all about money. :D Money, money money. :D

i could get two cheap dell laptops with the latest technology and keep them for 2 years each, and still have a better deal than the apple ibook that i keep for 4 years.
apple has good technology, but has no flexibility whatsoever. If you need DVI or dual screens, you need a powerbook, and pay 500 dollars extra for that even though the iBook is quite capable of it.
the IBM to Intel switch just means that Apple is becoming more corrupted like Microsoft, when Jobs said that they were switching to Intel because IBM couldn't produce a low-voltage G5 Chip for the powerbook. Well lookey now, there's a low-voltage g5 and it compares very well to the Pentium M.

That's sort of comparing apples and oranges (no pun intended). Dell has a few system that sort of stack up nicely against the Apple offering. You could compare the 600m with the 14" iBook and the 700m sort of with the 12" iBook. They're not perfect matches or anything. And it's also not like they are half price. You can get a 600m for maybe $800 that is nicely setup. The 700m is probably a little more. That's quoting good deals on the Dell's. My point is, it's not like they are half price. They are definitely cheaper.
Now, yes you can get some bargain basement laptops, but that's not really a fair comparison. Apple really doesn't have the bargain basement laptop that Dell has. The iBook is sort of a mid grade laptop when looking at the Dells.

By all means, buy your ibook or your xpbook, or $1200 worth of unsalted peanuts, if that's what you want to do! :) I, however, think it's worth waiting at least another week and a half. Sure we've had posts like mine before, and I dont' expect anyone to take a post as gospel- relying on one anonymous informant who reports information from another anonymous informant who, for all you know, doesn't exist would be silly. But the fact is, Thinksecret also is reporting the same thing, and they not only have a better contacts, but a reputation to look out for and a track record to uphold.
So if you need/want to buy today, go ahead, but in the last few months of studying these forums, this is the first time that I personally have felt that there is a strong reason to expect anything.
I don't blame you for doubting, though, we've all had our hopes up before, and we all know the sting of dissapointment. Still, this is a rumor forum, so I'd feel remiss if I didn't post what I believe is a credible rumor from a reliable source.
Sorry to be so long winded. Happy buying!

This is why Apple hates rumor sites. Someone makes a prediction about new iBooks coming, then we all get pissed off when it doesn't happen. Sucks that they aren't here yet, but that's the way it is. Maybe the move to Intel will ameliorate the issue, but who knows. You want an iBook or PowerBook, but one. If you can wait, wait. If you're just going to keep waiting forever, you'll never get anything. They may update tomorrow, may not until September. Who knows. I wouldn't recommend you buy a PC, but if that's what floats yor boat, I'm not going to stop you just because the Radeon 9200 can't do the ripple effect.
And for those complaining about the suckiness of the G4, um... that's why they're moving to Intel.

Apple could easily put a stop to rumor sites if they wanted to.... all that it would require is announcing product release dates in advance. Every car company in the world comes out with new models in the fall every year. I know computers are different, and they feel the element of surprise is profitable, but in that case rumor sites are just going to go along with the deal like flies on feces.

I dont remember any of the rumor sites saying that there will be an iBook update other than the rumor that just occured on Thinksecret.com. There have been people who come onto the forums and says things like "my brothers best friends wife's tennis partner is Steve Jobs and he says G5 ibook tomorrow with 4.5 Gig processors and 50Gigs of RAM standard for $149. There are few people who believe these stupid rumors that occur in the forums (that are not officially posted). The most dissapointment comes from every tuesday and everytime the shipping goes up. Rumor sites are not responsible for people jumping to conclusions at every change of the apple website.

LOL.
No.
You think announcing products in advanced would magically eliminate rumour sites?? Well what about the rumors of unannounced products? Apple has the cult status and because of that people will always be looking for the latest rumors on their activities, and with that demand, there will always be websites willing to supply. This has been said before but, early announcements only cause trouble because they can often be met with delays/let downs. And then people (investors) have a real reason to be pissed off, because it actually came from Apple's mouth. If its coming from the rumor sites, people have no one to be pissed at but themselves for getting their hopes up for the stupid rumors in the first place.

I for one am going to stand beside Spellflower on this one and believe they are coming out next week. There are just too many rumors and hints circulating for it to not be next week. Spellflower and me can bask in the glory of the prospect of new ibooks while the rest of you can continue to complain and try to discredit these rumors, as you all seem to be so fond of this practice anyway.
On that same note, I am going to be a switcher when the ibooks do get refreshed but I want to know, are all Apple fans this jaded? No one believes anything they hear and everyone is so pessimistic. It seems like everyone wants to prove rumors wrong more than they want to believe in them. I am not saying that we have to be overly optimistic about a few small rumors, but can't we atleast take the facts as they come and analyze the situation to the best of our abilities?

I am with you guys as well. :) I couldn't have said it better myself jmmdg6! The only thing different about us is that I have already made the switch almost 2 months ago with a Mac mini. Man, you are going to love it!! It's great! I can wait to get my new Apple product - an Apple iBook G4! (updated of course!) :D

And for those complaining about the suckiness of the G4, um... that's why they're moving to Intel.
IBM has low-voltage G5s that are equivalent to the Pentium Ms.

Average time for an ibook to be updated -158 days.
Number of days since the last update of the ibook - 274 days
Days overdue for an ibook update - 116.
i rest my case.

I don't think this is true. One rumor about swtiching to intel was that Apple was interested in the Pentium M chip.

Pentium M
Designed for: Laptops
Some think that the 32-bit Pentium M is what Apple was really after from Intel in the short term. The Pentium M isn’t based on the P4 core; it’s a separate animal that does a lot more work per clock cycle. Available in clock speeds from 1.5- to 2.13GHz, it easily outperforms the G4 found in Apple’s fastest notebooks and offers wonderfully parsimonious power consumption. Pentium M notebooks regularly last more than five hours on a single battery charge—something iBook and Powerbook users can currently only dream of.

That means that the next set of Pentium Ms (codenamed "Yonah") that will likely be in the Mactel PowerBooks will be better than what a PowerBook G5 would be. The only thing it will be missing is 64-bit support, which is no big deal.

Umm...the last time I checked iBooks could last 6 hours on a single charge.
 Where did that come from???

That's only Apple's claim though. I still get about 4.5 to 5 hours on my iBook though.

Much like I can get 5 hours from my Powerbook. Best I've got on continuous use is about 3.5 hours.

and the only pc laptops that go over 3.5 hours (all pc laptops get like 3.0-3.5 if carrying pentium m), are the ultraportables which get like 5 hours --- same as an ibook.
a new g4 lower wattage (for the ibook) and g5 lower wattage powerbook would kick ass

With low enough settings, you can pull off 5.5 hrs on an iBook.

A few people here have been saying that the G5 can do low power just as well as the Pentium M, and others have been saying that the Pentium M is better, etc.
A 90nm Pentium M has a TDP of 27W. However this does include their 2.1GHz Pentium Ms.
Now look on page 19 of http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/products/PowerPC_970_and_970FX_Microprocessors - PowerPC 970FX Datasheet
1.6GHz @ 1V = 21W maximum power use, typical 17W.
The G5 is still losing out on the typical however, I don't think it has the power states that the Pentium M has which allow it to get an average power consumption of 10W or thereabouts because it clocks down as well as cutting the voltage - clocking down to 600MHz and 0.8V or something can seriously reduce power consumption! If the G5 supported this, then you could see it dropping down to 1GHz at under 10W for a 1.6GHz+ G5.
Typically there are enough processors that could reach a speed grade or two higher than the documented speeds to feed Apple. So take that to mean 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz Power Optimised G5s.
Oh, and Intel's 64-bit Merom processor (follow up to Yonah) could be released as early as Q3 2006. Oddly enough, that matches reasonably well with the start of Apple's switch to Intel.

If it takes this long for new ibooks to come out - it's not going to be out of date for a long time! (now I've said that they'll update in 4 months i bet!!!)

There aren't and there will never be any new powerbooks / ibooks before the intel ones come out. Deal with it if you want one buy one now. Otherwise shut up and wait.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance the iBooks will be updated before June 2006 . . .

Yes there will 1 last revision for both the Powerbook and iBook before the Intel versions come out. Also expect the PowerMac and Mini to get Power PC upgrades soon as well. The next few weeks, we will see the iBook, Powerbook, and Mini updated followed by a late fall upgrade to the PowerMac. Anybody that does not think that these upgrades will occur is a fool.

iBooks, maybe, but a PB update is wishful thinking. Hey, we can all hope and wish and wish. But it ain't happening. I want to be as optimistic as you, but PB's won't be updated until October at the earliest. They're supposed to be a "prosumer" computer so Apple could care less if they're out for sale for back-to-school season or not. PB's are rustic, museum pieces now. Let those suckers corrode until then.

It could be mid 2006 before the intel portables come out. You don't really think Apple would go 20 months without updating the ibooks, do you?
